I think there is a chance for both. Maybe not all 82 games for Roy, (That is rare for most) but 85% of what he was. Which still means he can hit a pull up jumper unlike most players.
As for the new CBA I think they almost have to make that rule. If they want to lower the Cap for every team and make it hard for it to escalate, then they have to start with the newer contracts and create grandfather clauses for the old ones. They will have to ease it in or they will not get support from the players or owners who don't want to lose their stars.
Roy's contract is hardly the big issue for the Blazers in the off season.
Business is business. BRoy, is done. For him, I hope this is not the case and that he can somehow resolve his knee issues and make a successful return. But with both Roy and Oden with problems - how can the team move ahead without moving one or both? It is not pragmatic. Not good business.
Sometimes you must cut your losses. I truly believe that the team should cut their losses with both Roy and Oden. Move on. Move forward. Free up cap space and rebuild. It is the only direction that makes good business sense.
If this is accomplished, within three years we'll be back in the playoffs with a good, young team and with any luck - and we need luck! - we build another winner.
If this is not done (moving Roy and Oden) it is much like playing this weekend's PowerBall and buying 100 million tickets in attempts to win. There is a strong likelihood - even after buying 100 million tickets, that you would not win the jackpot.
Let other teams roll the dice on Roy and Oden. Perhaps they win the lottery by doing so? But this team can no longer waste money and cap space on a hope and 100 million lottery tickets.
