Re: 5-Star recruit commits to Oregon

I'm not sure I would put him as a 5 star recruit (more of a 4-star, which is still great), but his athleticism at that size is that of a 5-star.

He's gonna be fun to watch. You'll probably see him in the NFL one day at the OLB. Love to see him play the middle though he lacks the instincts at this point.

dang he kinda looks like Terrell Pryor, and Cam Newton's illigitemate love child.

Colt Lyerla = freak

for some perspective on just how athletic the 6'5 230 lb. CL is, here are his stats from the national HS combine from his sophomore year when he was 16

40 yard sprint: 4.63
Pro Agility Shuttle: 4.23
Vertical Leap: 38.5 inches
Bench Reps (185 lbs): 27
Broad Jump: 10'10" (National Combine Record)

here is a link to the 2010 NFL combine results for TEs. Four of the tests (40 yard dash, shuttle, vertical leap & broad jump) are the same for both combines.

wow. That sure put things into perspective thats for sure!

just a heads up... on the Bench it says 27 reps at 155 lbs... but I dont have sound so not sure if its a typo and addressed on the video or something.

yeah I saw that, the coach at the end of the video also says 155 pounds when reading off the bests of the day. But then the script comes up and says 185 pounds which is also the number sited in a rivals article I read this morning... :dunno:

according to that same article, following his Jr year he did the combine again and improved his vert to an even 40"... which is nice :)

ok cool, just thought I'd mention it

So what do you guys think he'll play? TE or LB? I'm really hoping he goes for LB because we need some replacements there with Matthews leaving.

While I'd love to see him at the Outside LB spot (among others), have you seen their commit list from this season? They've got a whole lot of LBs coming in.

Yeah, but none of them are the prospect that CL is.

both Scout and ESPN have Wallace ranked above Colt... rivals has them virtually the same. And if you're concerned about replacing an inside LB (Matthews) then Wallace is your man.

take rankings as a rough guide to what might be. Oregon's recent history has several examples of 2* guys going on to the NFL and 4* guys never panning out. Things often change quite a bit for 17-18 year old guys.

Do you think that the rankings hold more truth when you're looking at a LB or someone on the DL? I could see how offensive players wouldn't live up to the hype on the next level, or DBs... but it would seem to me that guys on the DL especially would be a pretty good bet.

well Brandon Bair was one of the best Oregon DTs I've seen and will go on to a NFL career next year, yet he was a 2* rated TE coming out of HS. Miles Wade, Simi Fili, & Justin Thompson were all recent 4-5* DT signees who certainly didn't live up to the hype.

btw... I bumped into this article over my coffee this morning that says that LBs Kiko Alonzo and Terrance Pritchard (another 4* guy who didn't do squat) are done as Ducks. First I've heard of it

Sad that those guys never live up to their potential, but making the jump from high school to college is huge, and then making the jump from college to the pros is equally as huge (if not more). Hard to project exactly who will do well and who won't.

If Lyerla played at Mater Dei or De LaSalle instead of Hillsboro High, he'd be a consensus 5-star recruit. Every major program on the west coast was after him, and his coaches at the AA game named him their best player in practice for the week.

California... good luck to him

with White, Colt, and French, Oregon was already pretty loaded with young talent at his size positions... plus he's supposed to be a top student with Med School aspirations

to partially quote Heath Ledger from 10 things I hate about you.

What is it about Cal? Do the women have beer flavored nipples over there?

but yes, good luck to him.. except once a year ;)

I'm a little more worried about McReynolds cancelling/rescheduling his visit... I really hope its just cause Chip Kelly isnt there.

he's rescheduled for the 21st when Kelly will be back. Also expected in that weekend are WR Kelley and the new TE/DL target Andrew Peterson

a new article since this morning makes it seem that the weekend of the 22-23rd is now unlikely, but his quotes make it seem that he has a lot of interest in the Ducks and will make it out one way or another.

don't worry be happy... you're a Duck fan! I'm confident that they'll add at least one more stud DT prospect to their mix. Crossing my fingers on both Ricky Heimuli and Hamani Stevens too
