Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

I am really hoping the Ducks focus all their efforts in landing large DT's, LB's and RB's the rest of the way

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

We now apparently leading for Ellis McCarthy according to Rivals. This is good news but it is still speculated that he wont leave the state of California.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

Thomas Tyner said we're his top school. Also Tyner said that Oregon was recruiting Thompson as an athlete. Seems like the same situation in how we landed De'Anthony Thomas, because he wanted to play offense but USC wanted him as a defensive back.

could be. I read Thompson said even though the offense here would be fun, he still wants to be a Safety.

Ellis McCarthy played with his team Thursday night, took his visit to Oregon this past weekend and then on Monday was presented with his U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey during a ceremony at his high school.

First, though, McCarthy said he is thrilled to get the opportunity to show why he's rated so high by Rivals.com and he's looking forward to the week of competition in San Antonio to cement himself as one of the nation's top defensive linemen.

Since he's being recruited at defensive tackle and defensive end the 6-foot-5, 311-pound prospect would like an opportunity to play both during Army week. He wants to show his skills all across the defensive line.

"It's a really big honor," McCarthy said. "I'm really excited to be invited to the game and be able to play against some of the best players in the country.

"It's going to be really exciting for everyone to see why I'm No. 2 in the nation at my position so I'll try to prove myself there. It's very important to prove myself because people might ask why I'm up there and I shouldn't be No. 2 so it will be exciting to show everybody what I can do."

McCarthy, No. 10 overall in the 2012 class and first in the California state rankings by Rivals.com, also made big news on the recruiting front Monday when he named Oregon the new leader in his recruitment after he visited Eugene this past weekend.

Everything at Oregon seemed to impress McCarthy, who doesn't plan to make his commitment until December or January, and the Ducks could be tough to beat moving forward.

"It was exciting," McCarthy said. "I'm glad I got to talk to the coaches more and I got to meet the players and they showed me around. Where it stands, I really like them, so they've moved to the top.

"They don't spare any expense on their players, on anything, for academics and athletics. They spend whatever money they need to for their players to get better and to be in better shape and to stay healthy."

Oregon's facilities are widely accepted as one of the best in the country and McCarthy said they did play a big factor in his decision to move the Ducks to the top of his list. The coaches and players also made an impact on him and so did the overall environment in Eugene.

It was a place he could see himself playing college football and even he admitted a little surprise that he was so impressed by the place.

"They have everything," McCarthy said. "They have underwater treadmills and ice baths and everything a player would need to get better. The weight room is amazing. The whole place is just really nice.

"It did kind of surprise me after the visit that they moved up to No. 1. It just really impressed me a lot."

Other schools will have a chance to surpass Oregon over the next few months as McCarthy figures out when he can take his other visits.

The five-star said he doesn't have any dates planned yet but that he's expecting to take official visits to USC, Washington, Florida and Cal. Other schools remain involved in his recruitment but that's where McCarthy wants to take his official trips.

McCarthy said he could have his decision made as early as December or he could wait to January, possibly announcing his pledge at the Army game.

That's going to be another busy week though as the Monrovia, Calif., standout tries to prove he's worthy of such a lofty ranking.

Here is Shaq's trip report per ESPN's Greg Biggins:

"Safety Shaq Thompson of Sacramento (Calif.) Grant took an official visit to Oregon last weekend and the Ducks are now a major player for the talented defensive back.

The trip to Eugene was the second official visit Thompson has taken, after visiting Wasington a few weeks back.

“Man, I loved it,” Thompson said. “Those were the craziest fans I’ve ever been around and they were in to the game from start to finish. I would say the whole game day experience was the best part of the visit for me. Seeing ESPN GameDay and hanging out with the other players at the game, it was really a lot of fun. Terrence Mitchell, who’s a NorCal guy like me, was my host and he was real cool and I clicked well with all the guys on the team.

Thompson knew coming in that Oregon had some impressive facilities, but he said he didn't fully anticipate to be blown away like he was.

“I heard a lot about the great facilities there and I was real impressed with that as well," he said. "The locker rooms were tight, and I love the jerseys. I also learned a lot about the academics, and I plan to major in Sports Marketing in college and Oregon has the No. 1 program in the country. They obviously have a great relationship with NIKE so that’s another huge plus for me.”

Prior to the visit, Thompson said Cal and Washington were co-leaders but you can make room for a third school now.

“Oregon is right there with them both at the top,” Thompson said. “They’re all even, and I like a lot about all three schools. I’m not ready to name a leader but Oregon definitely gave me a lot to think about.

“I have an official visit with Notre Dame this weekend, and I also set up a trip to Michigan for November. I’m not sure on my last visit but it will probably be to Arizona State. After my trips are done, I’ll sit down with my family and hopefully make my decision sometime in January.”

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

hmmm I like that Sports Marketing part. I still dont think we'll get him. I didnt realize his brother was Syd from Cal. But I like our chances a lot more now than I did last week.

ESPN tweet relayed that Ellis McCarthy showed up to Army All-American game selection ceremony wearing an Oregon sweatshirt

also, Shaq and recent USC decommit Arik Armstead have been tweeting back and forth about how much ST loved his Oregon visit.

Armstead would be a huge get!

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

damn, these two would be huge, if they start getting 5* defensive players, it could get ugly for the rest of the bcs in a hurry

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

Oregon, Oklahoma, and Texas all have offered today to Arik Armstead.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

Okay so what I'm hearing from sources, is that Oregon is a serious contender for Arik Armstead along with several other programs. They also say that Oregon will "assuredly" be getting a visit. They also said his father is a fan of our staff and that Armstead was very impressed with Dana Altman.

Also JH is saying that Oregon has a shot if they recruit him at a high level.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

Altman? I dont follow B-Ball recruiting much. Is Armstead wanting to play Basketball too?

A regular Julius Peppers.

DJ's latest via ESPN's Greg Biggins...

“I’m done with my visits, and I’m down to Oregon and Arizona State,” Foster said. “Both trips were great and you could say I’m trying to figure out if I should follow my head or my heart. Right now, I’m leaning to Oregon but I just got back from there so I know I’m still on that post-trip high. I really loved the visit though and I feel that’s the best place for me. My parents went with me too and they even want me to Oregon.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

nice thanks! where are they looking to play him?

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

no prob.

I read that they are looking at him kind of how they line up Barner and DeAnthony in the TAZR position. (Some slot receiver, Primary RB, Second RB in a 2 backfield etc) Basically anywhere to get him in space.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

updated original post to include new commits.

Re: 2012 Commits and Recruiting News

Aldophus Washington DE 4* on Rivals, 5* on Scout cancelled his Oregon visit for this weekend. Probably going to be a Buckeye from what I hear.
