Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

The Cavs do have a high interest in Minnesota power forward Kevin Love, an All-Star before being sidelined by a hand injury this past season. However, the Timberwolves have made it clear that Love is unavailable. The Cavs have tried, sources said, but won’t get anywhere.

With Love off the market, the Cavs are expected to make a play for Wolves center Nikola Pekovic, a restricted free agent. That’s no surprise -- as Pekovic is exactly the type of pick-setting, rebounding and scoring inside presence the Cavs could use.

Looks like Wolves won't consider some kind of trade of Love for the #1 pick. Don't know if it is good or bad we are following suit with Wolves management.

Who is running things in their front office with Kahn gone? Wasn't there also word of RA leaving?

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

A.J. Matthews, the 7-foot center out of Division III Farmingdale State on Long Island, is fast becoming the underdog story of the NBA Draft. He will be heading up to Westchester to work out for the Knicks next week, according to a league source. Matthews, the Brooklyn product who was not even invited to the Chicago pre-draft camp, impressed at the combine hosted at Nets headquarters in New Jersey last week. According to a source, Matthews has lined up about a half-dozen team workouts as clubs are intrigued by his 7-foot-3 wingspan and gaudy numbers. Matthews averaged 22.4 points, 16.3 rebounds and 3.75 blocks his senior year. The Knicks are in dire need of a rebounder and he has caught the eye of assistant general manager Allan Houston. Though the Knicks don’t have a second-round pick, they are expected to purchase one.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

Per ESPN:

Teams were hoping the 2013-14 salary cap would have a nice bump up from the 2012-13 number of $58,044,000, but that apparently is not going to happen.

According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, the NBA has informed all the teams that projections have the 2013-14 salary cap rising slightly to around $58,500,000. That is a disappointment as most thought it would come in at least around the $60,000,000 mark.

That low number will affect the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets the most as they need all the room they can get to make a legit offer to Dwight Howard. A lower cap will also hurt the Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic.

The Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, Utah Jazz and Milwaukee Bucks have the most money available under the 2013-14 salary cap and this is a hit, but not as much as it is to the other teams.

Isn't JJ Hickson a forward?

awesome post

Wow, that really was. Solidifies my interest in Jefferson, Dalembert, and Blatche as potential FA targets, depending on the price for each.

I was a bit on the Jefferson bandwagon, but that article made me cringe a little when it came to his defense.

Looks like there might be some stop gap centers for the right price. I'm now (for the week at least) on the Splitter bandwagon, but he won't come cheap and is not a sure thing.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

Given the team is looking for a defensive center, that article is depressing. After Howard there isn't one center who doesn't have major holes in on area on defense. Pek was probably the best as his lowest was 40% on the PNR.

Pek was the guy that surprised me in my incredibly unscientific center breakdown.

The Hibbert thing last year has soured me on RFA's, otherwise I'd be with you on Splitter. And now that I think about it, Jefferson and Aldridge probably wouldn't be able to coexist very well, as they both love the left side of the floor.

Blatche has always intrigued me, going back a few years. If he really has matured, he could be a great fit. Of course, defense is a problem there too. Guess we can't really win here...

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

Pek PNR: 64/40
Jefferson PNR: 27/36
Splitter PNR: 75/22
Blatche: PNR 28/53
Dalambert: PNR 42/52

Wright and Jermaine do well in PNR, but:

O'Neil: ISO 1% (worst in the league?)
Wright: post up/spot up 32/37

How depressing! Maybe we should set our sights on drafting a center in the draft and use our cap to bring in a wing.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

I would prefer a wing in the draft, but if the BPA is a center, take him and add Dalembert or Kaman. Which ever will take the shortest contract.

That's my vote. I just don't see an answer, and most of the options are not available or you would have to overpay. Wish there was a way to get Len. I like the idea of Gobert, but it doesn't sound like he is coordinated enough to use his size, and who knows if he ever will be.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

How did they not realize this before it was out? :

http://www.ajc.com/news/sports/hawks-mention-of-howard-paul-in-letter-may-constit/nYBg6/

The Hawks may have violated the NBA’s anti-tampering policy by mentioning Dwight Howard and Chris Paul by name in a recent letter sent to prospective ticket buyers.
Atlanta native Howard and Paul are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents July 1. As each are currently under contract, with the Lakers and Clippers respectively, a team is not allowed to speak about them publically.
The letter, obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was on team letterhead and headlined “Hot New Player news: Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.” It began with the statement: “The buzz around our offseason is more than heating up. With massive cap space, 4 draft picks, and free agency rapidly approaching, we sit in the best position in the NBA. Player interest is skyrocketing as the possibilities of landing Chris Paul & Dwight Howard become more and more of a reality.”

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

I don't see how that's tampering, but whatever

I don't believe they're technically free agents yet, so it's commenting on another team's players, which is tampering.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

What is ridiculous is you know that Houston has been in contact with his agent to at least gauge Howard's interest. That is tampering, but how do you prove it? You can't unless someone accidentally admits it.

Yeah, I have no clue where the line gets drawn. I feel like it was mentioned that James Harden already reached out to him as well. Maybe it's putting something on official letter head.

Tampering or not, that seems like a really stupid thing to send out to STHs. Hey, we're gonna try like hell for two superstars, even though it's unlikely. I dunno, just seems odd.

Re: 2013 Official NBA Off-season Movement & Rumors

The NBA said they don't care if harden reaches out to Dwight. They aren't going to waste time refereeing friends talking about playing together
