What about going after Matt Barnes as a backup SF? A guy you hate to play against but would love to have on your team.

I am on board. He seems to like LA though. So stays with Clips or goes back to Lakers (don't know how they can afford him but he is interested).

I really think Andre Miller playing 20 minutes a night would make a lot of sense here. Aldridge loved playing with him, Lillard or McCollum could guard the other team's PG when he's in (and he'd play the weaker of the 2g or SF).

He doesn't make sense in Denver and a lot of the teams full of stars he wouldn't fit great on b/c they're looking for defense or floor spacing out of their role players, as their stars dominate the ball.

I know he's got another year left on his contract with Denver, but I bet we could get him for very cheap and the whole rest of our team right now is good shooters it seems like.

The only thing is you really can't play him with Matthews real often b/c they both guard 2's much better than other positions.

Denver might actually like Matthews a lot as a replacement for Iguodala, and they need shooting desperately. I know Matthews has more value than Miller but some sort of three way might make some sense.

Would a Splitter/Miller/Webster/O'neal offseason be a step forward or back?

Lillard/McCollum
Miller/Webster
Batum/Webster
Aldridge/O'neal
Splitter/Leonard

How about Matthews to Denver
A Denver pick, one of our picks, and our Greek guy to Houston
Miller, Asik, and Robinson to us? We'd have 4 Million left to maybe sign someone like Webster still.

Lillard/McCollum
Miller/Webster/
Batum/Webster
Aldridge/Robinson
Asik/Leonard

Bargnani to the Knicks

Camby/Novak/1st round/2nd round picks to the Raptors

I saw someone else mention Andre Miller in this thread earlier or another thread so this isn't just to shameless.

He isn't a free agent guys (I know you aren't saying he was but earlier they were). He makes 5 MIL. Much too much to spend on backup PG. We are thinking about not even bringing back Maynor and the most he would make is 3.15 MIL. No chance we bring in Andre Miller.

So they have about 16 MIL to spend after those waivings. They don't need 16 MIL for Howard do they? As I said, I think they are trying to bring someone with him.

They need 20.5M for Howard's "max" offer.

His current salary is 19.54M. A player can always make 105% of his previous year's salary, regardless of "max" set by the league (25%, 30%, 35% of cap, or the figures set after the moratorium). So even if Howard was limited by the league's number (which he would be), he can start a contract at 20.5M (105% of the 19.54 he made last year). That's why K*be can make half the salary cap.

I would never love to have Matt Barnes on my team.

Crazy amount of money! They don't have to sign him to that much though technically correct? Howard seems sincere this time that it will be about getting a ring and not about the money. What is 16 vs 20 in the grand scheme of things when really you make your money on endorsements?

Of course not. He can take as little as he wants. (See: Dirk saying he'll take less next contract in order to sign better FAs). But everything I've read says Dwight isn't taking less than the full max. Maybe that changes if HOU can "only" come up with, say, 16M for him. But that's not what's been reported by anyone.

He's a winner. Great team player. Takes it as a challenge to defend the other teams best player. Not a very likeable player, but effective. He'd be a good signing.

Mighty Moke’s Top 50 NBA Free Agents said:
Our top four players are nothing to sneeze at, although the chances are almost nil that Chris Paul goes anywhere further than Donald Sterling’s office in Beverly Hills to sign his new max deal. The other three — Howard, Al Jefferson and Josh Smith — are likelier than not to move on.

Nikola Pekovic is probably this year’s leading candidate to receive a poison pill deal that the Minnesota Timberwolves may not be able to match while others—O.J. Mayo, Brandon Jennings, and Tyreke Evans come to mind—may be in for a rude awakening when they are not offered truckloads of money reminiscent of prior CBAs.

It will be very interesting to see where Andre Iguodala and Monta Ellis end up. We still are not sure what to make of J.J. Hickson or J.R. Smith’s ability to be everyday NBA contributors. And in the value bin (we think), some of the league’s elder statesmen—Lamar Odom, Manu Ginobili, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, and Jose Calderon—probably do not have enough left to play 30 minutes a night for a contender, but they do still have something left in the tank to help.

I hate that guy. He's all bark, no bite. It looks like he's working hard, but guys continually torch him on D.

Hell BRoy dropped probably the most effortless 50 I've ever witnessed on the guy.

Knicks are supposedly about to acquire Bargnani for Marcus Camby, Novak, a 1st and a 2nd.

Wow, Knicks FO is pretty dumb.

WAS is rumored to be going after either Eric Maynor or Beno Udrih as their backup PG.

He was Jason Richardson's assignment most of that game.

Barnes is a pest that can be had for cheap. A nice guy to have as much as lot of people don't like him.

Just a terminology issue, but "Poison Pill" denotes someone who's on the last year of their rookie deal, but has signed their extension giving them at least a 20% salary increase. This particular provision makes it extremely hard to trade someone. (Like if HOU somehow wanted to trade Harden last year).

"Toxic" contract is the term the author is looking for--one where you put in the max signing bonus, trade kicker, up-front payments, etc in order to get the other team not to match.

This needed its own thread?

Who?

Where?

Blatche could come fairly cheap.

Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd is meeting with free-agent center Andray Blatche on Monday. Because they are well over the salary cap and don't have his Bird Rights, the Nets can only offer Blatche all or part of the taxpayer "mini" mid-level exception or 120 percent veteran's minimum. But the Nets are expected to use their mid-level exception to sign someone else, possibly sharpshooter Kyle Korver, according to a source.
