You'll see a million hits talking about why teams would or wouldn't risk trading for Howard.

The point I was making, and left unsaid, is that if you aren't going to get LMA to sign an extension, figure it out now and get the most you can for him. Otherwise, he'll be in the position of refusing a trade to Orlando for 5 of their next 10 lotto picks because he won't sign an extension.

But I think BrianFromWA has been saying this for a while. He's pretty smart.

Of course you figure out if he is going to stay or not as soon as possible. LMA wants to see improvement and the team has improved but by how much is the question. The situation on whether he stays or not should be evaluated two more times next year, at the trade deadline and after the Blazers season ends, and if at either point it looks/sounds like LMA wants out you trade him.
Olshey should have used this off season to gauge LMA market value and should continue to monitor it through the season.

They'd have had a choice of more than 3 or 4 teams willing to risk an offer.

The Rockets supposedly offered up a slew of 1st round picks, 2 of the guys they already picked with 1st round picks, Chandler Parsons, Kevin Martin and more for Howard and some of their shitty contracts (like Hedo's).

The Blazers and Nets were looking at a 3-team deal involving GWallace and Brook Lopez going to the Magic for Howard and contract dumps.

The Lakers were ready to part with a healthy Bynum and Gasol.

The Hawks figured to have offered two of Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, and Al Horford.

The Warriors' offer in 2011 started with Stephen Curry or Monta Ellis, pick one.

whoopee. Lakers nver offered both. Was always one. And Orlando could have hd Bynum, didn't want him. Easy now to see why. An overpaid Joe Johnson, they should be so lucky!! Ellis is shit. Houston offer is meh. And they already could hae had Brook Lopez if they wanted to last year. So really, not a whole lot changed. Their new GM wanted to avoid striving for mediocrity, so passed on guys like Johnson, Ellis, Gasol, etc. Smart move. Went young tanked, got salary flexibility, high pick, etc. I fail to see an offer there where they're substantially better with a great future. And, that they couldn't have had(Brook Lopez) last summer.
 
In retrospect, the Magic could have avoided the Dwightmare and arguably gotten a better haul. However, when teams tank for years to get a player like D12 they had to give it a year and hope they could make moves to make him stay.

I would say we have a year to decide on LMA. Players do change their mind. That is the one thing we know for sure.

Right now his rumored first choice (Dallas) has no assets to trade us. Next summer can only be better. Hell you never know they may have better assets in two years to trade us. If they use their cap space next summer like expected, a trade in two years may be the only way they can get LMA. There are a lot of ways this could go down.

Other teams hoping for Lebron or Melo will have cap space next summer and will be easier to trade with. Say their #1 pick. You trade with them now and that #1 pick will not be as good.

Olshey does not strike me to be one that will foolishly panic. The Blazers have time.

Blazers have a better chance getting an all star by trying to convince their current all star to stay and resign than trade him in for an bunch of long shots and hopeful dreams on lottery picks, IMO. If not, they clear the cap space and make a move for a big FA in a couple of years . . . hopefully they won't use that cap space of a bunch of other team's rejects this time. :)

The advantage is olshey didn't handcuff the team with high priced players that are only designed to play with Howard.

Even if Aldridge left for nothing; which I seriously doubt; we still have good assets on our roster. Players with very manageable contracts; that can be used if we need to go a different direction.

Use the Howard scenario all you want, but Aldridge isn't Howard. He isn't some primodonna that wants bright lights and big city. He's a dude that is reserved and keeps to himself. He just wants to win.
 
Vucevic and Harkless aren't a bad haul to be honest.

And none of those other trades really affect the Magic all that much. (It was also pure speculation they'd depart with Gasol AND Bynum - plus, Bynum sat out a year - so it would've been for an aging Gasol)

2 of Joe JOhnson, Smith and Horford is ---- no thank you.

Really, the deal they made is better than any other deal LONG term than any except Steph Curry.

He always frustrated me with his style of play, given his size. Physically, the guy's a monster, but it seems like he shies away from physical contact on both ends of the floor. He's definitely capable of physical, low-post play, and he's really got great offensive instincts, but he can tend to fall in love with his mid-range jumper a lot and seldom plays with his back to the basket. Like you said though, he's got a good mid-range jumper, one of the best in the league for his size... so that's not necessarily a bad thing... I just get frustrated watching a guy that big play so soft.

Defensively, he used to get such a bad rep in Philly for not trying and just being an overall horrible defender, but I will say that we didn't see much of that in Memphis. The effort was definitely there for the most part, and maybe we were a little overly critical of his defensive weaknesses because of the players he was surrounded with, but he did seem a bit aloof at times and got consistently lost on rotations. Still, based on the reviews from the Philly fans when we initial acquired him, I'd say he's gotten better on that end of the floor and will probably continue to... he's just not the brightest crayon in the box sometimes on the defensive end.

At the end of the day, depending on what you're paying for him, it's not a bad signing. He's capable of huge offensive outbursts, he's still only 25, and while he always frustrated me, I've got a lot friends and family that were really pissed off when we shipped him off to Cleveland. Hell, my brother still maintains we should have started him.

Also, I remember a lot of Philly fans taking shots at his character and effort when we acquired him, but I never saw any of that. Like I said earlier, he always seemed to bring intensity every night, and I never heard anything about him being trouble in the locker room... from all indications, he was a good teammate.... he's just sorta dumber than a box of rocks, which showed up every now and then when he'd get lost defensively, but I don't think that was for lack of trying.

But they would be in a much better "tanking position" and salary if they made the deal and he bolted anyway. Remember you endorsing full rebuild and tank mode if your team doesn't compete for a title?

Why? 2014 is the best draft class since LBJ. You said it yourself that tanking wins championships "in reality". There is a big concern if Rose will ever be the same player he once was. Noah may bolt because his contract is up. All these things you expressed about the Blazers seriously applies to the Bulls. Instead, the Bulls are thinking about Amnestying Boozer and getting nothing in return. Deng is still a health concern. You could have been in good shape financially and in a good opportunity to win the lotto.

Deng played 75 games last season, almost 39 minutes per. Led the league in minutes per game even.

I don't think it's a good idea to tank. I value wins and making the playoffs. You do have to play the games, otherwise the Blazers are 82 game winners in your hallucinations. Or was that they really won "40+" last season?

The Golden State Warriors made a move to bolster their frontcourt depth on Monday, agreeing to terms with Marreese Speights to a three-year contract, a person close to the situation told USA TODAY Sports' Sam Amick.
The third year of the deal will be a team option. The person spoke on the condition on anonymity
