There is a BIG difference between trading a disgruntled star who says he won't resign (Melo) and Hoping to resign a disgruntled star who wants out (Dwight). Orlando figured they could talk Dwight into signing an extension, they couldn't so they traded a player who COULDN'T sign an extension to his contract and coming off back surgery therefor diminishing his value. Also the Dwight deal was also looked down on as one of the worst trades the magic could do, right up there with Harden for the haul OKC got. BTW what Orlando actually got for dwight was, Josh McRoberts, Christian Eyenga, Maurice Harkless, Nikola Vucevic, Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, and draft picks;
The Magic got McRoberts, Eyenga, a 1st and a 2nd round pick and cap space from the Lakers. They also got Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic, Moe Harkless, and a protected 1st round pick from Denver and the Sixers.
Google "Dwight Howard risk trade"
You'll see a million hits talking about why teams would or wouldn't risk trading for Howard.
The point I was making, and left unsaid, is that if you aren't going to get LMA to sign an extension, figure it out now and get the most you can for him. Otherwise, he'll be in the position of refusing a trade to Orlando for 5 of their next 10 lotto picks because he won't sign an extension.
But I think BrianFromWA has been saying this for a while. He's pretty smart.
