I'm not too impressed with any of players in the range of Portland's pick - especially giving them a guaranteed contract.

I'd love to trade down a few times & pick up 2-3 second picks while dumping Meyers.

Maybe:
24 to Philly for 26, 39, & 56
26 + Meyers + ET to Memphis for Parsons + 32.

The second round picks can be signed to 2-way contracts and be stuck in dleague. We can swing for the fences at that point with minimal risk.

Players I like as 2nd round (but not as 1st rounders) picks include:
One of Shamet, Brunson, or Hutchinson as a 'safe' pick.

I'd love to draft Jalen McDaniels & Brian Bowen as big potential guys.

My gut feeling is Luka Doncic is going to be a stud. However this is based soley on watching You tube and reading hype articles.

He seems like someone that could have trouble getting his shot away off the dribble. He also seems like a player that would struggle getting to the rim, and if he can't do that, then he won't cause defenses to collapse to open up passing lanes for open shots from teammates.

For someone who's dribbling is such an important part of his game, I think his lack of quickness will hold him back. Evan Turner was viewed in a similar light coming out of Ohio State as Doncic is now.

I have similar concerns with Doncic, but I think he's too special of a passer and a good enough shooter to make up for his athletic deficiences. His size combined with his IQ should help him on both ends too.

His ceiling hype is overstated I think, but he has enough to be a borderline top 10 wing.

I like the underrated Bamba pick. I've come around on his movement skills which gives him DPOY like defensive ceiling and I think his offensive game is underrated. Lob catching + nba 3 range and some sneaky face up game potential.
 
There honestly isn't a lot of options this year for Portland.

Dzanan Musa and Hutchinson are the only players in that zone.

With Musa, I think you can get someone like Chandler Parsons - a guy who can shoot the ball and distribute a bit.

With Hutchinson, I'd say someone like Trevor Ariza who can defend decently and shoot a bit.

It's more like drafting a specialized role player/starter than a star.

It took Toronto two first round picks last year to get rid of Carroll who is actually much better than swish3 specialist Meyers and Turner and has a $13M contract which isn’t even that bad. Nobody will take a late pick that we have to absorb nearly $60M over two years on two useless players.

My suggestion was Leonard and a future pick for Bayless plus maybe some cash. Bayless has one year left on his contract. Philly could use a big with Embid's injury history and Leonard could even play in a lineup with Embid.

Sixers want to clear salary to go after big free agents. If anything it will be them attaching picks to Bayless to get rid of him - I think they will deal one of their second rounders this year (they have 3 or 4 and two of them will be quite high) to send him to Nets or something. Teams will take it because it is essentially just one year.

It doesn't even have to be Philly. Look for a team that has a similar contract for a year and toss in the future pick and even toss in around 3 mil which would bring Leonards salary cost to the team at around 7mil. Other players that fit could be Terrence Ross for Orlando , Alec Burke for Utah, Kostas Koufos for Sacramento, Jared Dudley for Phoenix.
 
Kevin Huerter from Maryland is interesting. Nice size for a SG, fluid athlete, good IQ on both ends and potentially elite shooting.

Could be a Klay lite type player.
 
Just watched tape on Melvin Frazier. HELL NO.

No shake to his game, a very slow first step, a mediocre handle, and his 3pt shot won't translate to the NBA. People fall in love with measurements too much. His game is wack.
 
I like Chandler Hutchinson. He brings the qualities this team lacks. He probably won't develop into a proper superstar but he should be a nice player and might even grow to be someone who can play 30 minutes a night.

He's also 22 so should be more ready than most of the draft. Kind of reminds me how everyone knew Brogdon was quite good but nobody wanted to take him very high because he didn't have much upside at 23. He was already prepared to take on NBA players though and Bucks did amazingly well to pick him. Could be the same with Hutchinson - he might not develop much from here but could be ready to play from the go.

I don't understand why people think he won't debelop. He improved a ton just last summer, has a great work ethic, his body has a lot of room to improve, and 22 isn't some cap on growth as a player.

He's the Donovan Mitchell of this draft.

Man, I really want to be with you on this. He's a hard working, well-spoken kid who seems easy to root for.

I know you're not making a direct comparison, but Donovan just showed a lot more skill at a younger age. Not to beat the horse, but I don't think Chandler has much creator upside and his jumper is still really far away. Fine off the catch with time and space, but if he has to speed up his release, shoot off the dribble or off any kind of movement, his mechanics fall apart.

Could be weapon in the open court with his ability to handle, pass and finish at his size, but against good D in the half-court I see him struggling to bring value.
 
The more I watch Huerter, the more I think he's good starter upside.

I made the comparison earlier, but he has potential to bring value in similar areas as Klay--off ball gravity, versatile POA defender with size.

Klay had slightly better strength, length and athleticism coming out and a more versatile jumper (higher release and quicker to his shooting pocket), which gave him a bit more upside on both ends. The one advantage Kevin may have is passing.

Worrying about age is the biggest mistake possible. Multi-year guys are consistently the steals of the draft.

He can attack closeouts well, and we do s0 at the NBA. When he gets going downhill he's very effective. We don't need him isolating, just need him to be able to shoot the 3 well which will make guys close out hard which will allow him to attack those closeouts and get into the paint where he's very effective.

His jumper isn't very far away. Almost shot 40% from 3pt last year, and has a smooth stroke with good mechanics that's effortless, and therefore should translate well to the NBA 3pt line.

You know who he actually reminds me of coming out of college? A smaller version if Kyle Kuzma with defense. Kuzma had all the same knocks coming into the NBA, but also flashed all the same things Hutchison has flashed.

Huerter is slow laterally. Dont see him being a good defender.
 
Better graphics than @HCP could make with 1/100th of the resources!!!

After weighing all the variables - age/skill-set/etc - I'm starting to settle on a prospect.

With where we are picking, I think we'd be remiss if we didn't take a chance and swing for the fences.

I like Chandler Hutchison and Jontay Porter, but my prospect at #24:

My pipedream: Mo Bamba
My underrated: Robert Williams
Undrafted FA/SPL Invite: Tai Odiase

Super value second round buys: Bonzie Colson and Ethan Happ​

"A distinct shot-blocker. There has been no one to come out of college in the past seven or eight years who can so carefully, and yet so forcefully, block shots at the rim like Konate. Physically, he's going to impress. Has a great chance to surprise at the combine in a lot of the athletic drills because of where he's from: playing for Bob Huggins in that Press Virginia scheme could work out well for Konate. He's not an offensive option, so a ceiling is absolutely above him in terms of where he could get picked, but Konate is such a specimen on defense that he could become a high-level rim protector for a decade in the NBA. With him, it's all about acing the drills. Otherwise, he could return to college and be the frontrunner for national defensive player of the year."​
