Forum Game 2018 Olshey Interview: Who are the 5?

Welcome to our community

I just think those are the 5 guys which were targeted.
Hezonja was targeted and Portland thought they had him until he went to the Knicks.
At least that's what the media portrayed it as.
This forum was sad when he went there instead of Portland too.

There was a thread saying Portland was interested in Beasley before FA started. Or was it early in FA? i don't remember.
These two were obvious targets which leaked to the media.

The other three, I'm not going to hold a candle to 'proven playoff performers'.
If he wants that, then it's going to be old guys who I just don't see why you'd ad someone like Korver to Portland's roster.
So I'll stick with the 5 I listed and hope NO wasn't going after guys like Korver.
He said at the beginning of the off season that he wanted to add guys that were proven in the playoffs and could get them further in April. I'm not saying that strategy was right or wrong but if your list were his 5 targets then nothing he says can be trusted and he's simply throwing darts at a wall. I really hope this isn't the case but I'm starting to wonder.

I think NO goes into FA targeting one or two 'underrated players' as his main plan.
Or
Players who deserve a bigger role, but for whatever reason won't get it on their current team.

I don't think NO, or the Blazers in general are very good at evaluating free agents... Since Matthews? Maybe go back further than that, as when Matthews joined Portland he was a 2nd year player irrc. Portland has always been good at evaluating young talent and getting the most out of them.

At the end of the day, if you're going to have an offensive minded coach like Stotts.
It would behoove you to target free agents who've shown to be at least serviceable offensively before they get in Stotts' system.
Turner, Aminu, Harkless, Plumlee, Davis, Henderson, Vonleh. For everything they are.
These players are not in the league because of their ability to get buckets.

Hell I'm not even sure if Portland ran a system last year.
It was more, Lillard come down run P&R. CJ dribble. Get Nurk to rebound and finish strong. Davis clean everything up.
Is this really a system? Did it make players better?
Or did Lillard just shine so bright in 17-18 that Portland was able to get the 3rd seed and the division.

Going to be my last reply of the day.
Head is starting to hurt a bit.

So what you're saying is he's a failure. Great. I'm completely in the fire Neil bandwagon.

Sure. How can he not persuade people to come and play for less money or not like the rain?

Seriously, I understand the frustration, but this is not a reasonable post.

so every guy we thought would be an option for the TPMLE wasn't.

every one of them.

what does that suggest about the realism of our exec team? lol i mean, it would have been a 'steal' if it came off but there are tons of other teams looking too, and likely they are the ones that paid their value. we, on the other hand, assumed we'd get good people to naturally want to be here for peanuts.

last guy to actually do that?

Ed Davis.

and we all know how that ended.

Great post. I really don't think NO has a good handle on the ebs & flow of the marketplace.

Here's how many fucks I have to give about your thoughts on the reasonability (yes I just made that up) of my post.

Olshey Interviewed by Brook:

BlazersEdge summary: https://www.blazersedge.com/2018/8/...shey-blazers-traded-player-exception-ed-davis

One of the money quotes:
Olzendam asked Olshey about the lack of arrival of veterans to the team this summer:

I don't want this to turn into another Olshey bitch session. I just want to know who you think the 5 wings were.

If we still have this exception, why are we not signing anyone? Lucas Nogueira is available, would give us excellent rim protection. Could have him with Zach on the floor and completely seal the paint

Explain to me why you found this funny? Or is anything regarding basketball makes you laugh in embarassment? Do you know who Lucas Nogueira is, for example?

I laugh because I find it funny that you claim to have all this basketball knowledge and then you post stuff like this:

If we still have this exception, why are we not signing anyone? Lucas Nogueira is available, would give us excellent rim protection. Could have him with Zach on the floor and completely seal the paint

1) No, we don't still have the Trade Exception. It expired on July 25th.

2) You can't just sign someone with a Trade Exception. The Blazers are over the luxury tax apron so they can't do a sign-and-trade either.

3) The roster currently has 15 guys on it with guaranteed contracts so there is no room to sign free agents.

A) exception has expired and is no longer available.

B) portland could not sign a player with the exception... they could only trade for them

C) you need your eyes checked.... your 'eye test' in watching nba players seems to be off.

Edit - Hoopsjock beat me to the punch. Apparently great minds think alike

The OP says mid-level tax payer exception. says nothing about traded player exception

Man. You were almost here. Then you went and shot off like a rocket into outspace again.

That baskeball knowledge you have blows me away.

Spending the mle on anyone less than a serious impact player is not worth the financial impact in the long run.
There are no serious impact players for this team that could be had for 5.3 mill now and many more millions down the road. Hence, he didnt use it.

I don't see any spaceships in this photo,so I am guessing 0?

We used the Tax-mle on Curry and Trent (because it made his contract guaranteed). The OP was asking who we thought Olshey targeted because he said there were 5 guys he offered it to that signed elsewhere.

OK. so we don't have anymore money? Thanx. that's good to know

I think we should remember there is quite a difference between knowing basketball and knowing all the ins and outs of the salary cap...
Just to add a little more (definitely not aimed at TBF or any particular poster):
There is quite a difference between Acting like you have basketball knowledge, and actually having knowledge.
There is quite a difference between Acting like you know about the cap, and actually knowing about the cap.

This is part of what sucks about this place - some just want to beat a drum over and over again in hopes everyone will acknowledge how awesome they are. Why can't we just agree to disagree when necessary?

OTOH, there are some seriously great things about s2 that we need to be reminded of in the literal dog days of summer:
We have posters who have great cap knowledge.
We have posters who have great stats knowledge.
We have posters who have great insights.
We have posters who spend a lot of time and energy looking stuff up and doing other stuff.
We have posters who have a lot of "personality".
.....

I know a little about the cap and stats, but some here know the ins and outs, and I happily defer to their expertise. Certain posters amaze me in a good way :) I think @BonesJones made up 120 trades in a 6-week span, wow! I could do long and inciteful @BrianFromWA and @Boob-No-More type posts (and I occasionally do!), but they take me hours and these guys whip this stuff up in minutes! @HCP and @KingSpeed give the boards some much needed "flavor" (though HCP needs to stop with the Laker crap).

Anyway, this place sucks sometimes, but I respect a lot of the posters and am happy to be here. I hope others feel the same.

I obviously Haven’t been here as long as most of you, but I for the most part enjoy it. Though sometimes the OT section scares me lol.
Lots of interesting perspectives on the Blazers and definitely some great ideas and knowledgeable people here.

Protip stay out of the section which will not be named.
Nothing good is over there. And if you mention that section by name too much, certain posters will venture over here. No one wants that.

C'mon, you're making it sound like a combination of Beetlejuice and Voldemort.

Come to think of it....carry on.

I know players you don't, you were trying to say
Wrong. Lucas Nogueria, from Brazil. 7'2 (I believe) Center from Brazil. Had a really solid game against us last year that I watched.

Doesn't mean he's Rudy Gobert....
