Trade 2021 Off-Season Trade Ideas

In every conceivable way, Simmons is the anti-CJ to almost a laughable extent. But if Philly botches this and really does make him available, I think the reason we need to make it happen is simply the roster-building flexibility he provides you next to Dame.

His size, defense and ball handling literally allow you to mix and match rosters with him and Dame better than anyone not named Giannis in the league. Want to go big? Play him as your 2, Roco as your 3, etc. Want to run and go small? Play him as your 4 or 5. Is the lack of 3pt and FT shooting mildly alarming? I guess? But it would also be why he's available and not being called the next Lebron.

To add to these thoughts...

The above roster flexibility is going to be ABSOLUTELY crucial when you don't have any meaningful draft picks and a supermax player. A core of Dame, Simmons, Roco, Nurk and a resigned Powell is a very solid 5, but likely you're going to have to fill in the cracks and depth with specialized role players, so being able to shop from a larger pool of players (because you can play Simmons anywhere) will likely yield better-than-the-alternative results.

Neil's claim to fame is still his trade for Chris Paul... feels like a similar situation and like we're going to need to put together a similar type of package for Simmons, but I'd do it in a heartbeat...

Dame
Powell
Simmons
RoCo
Nurk

Simons
Little
Collins (he HAS to be healthy at this point, right?)
????

We need another big and maybe another wing. The nice thing about Collins is that he can play both frontcourt positions. Realistically the dude should be getting 30 minutes per game (if he's healthy.) If RoCo plays 35 and Nurk plays 30, that leaves about 31 minutes total between the two positions for Collins.

That's a really solid 8 man rotation though. I wouldn't mind a creative scorer of the bench. Someone in the same vein as CJ, but not CJ obviously. I think Ant is proving to be a really good spot up shooter and that's about it.

Collins is our starting PF

The C and backup PG we’ve been looking for? They’re both good defenders. To make money work, we’d have to trade CJ and Nurk.

Dame/Bledsoe
Powell/Elleby
Covington/Little
Collins/Covington
Adams/Collins

That’s a major upgrade on D.

please take the apostrophe out of the title

That's why I think CJ for Harris might happen. I don't think Philly is ready to give up on Simmons yet. I think CJ/Simmons/Embiid could be a really good combo.

Agreed! I think the trade that makes more sense if it's expanded for us to get Thybulle (perhaps by trading Jones). For Philly, with CJ they can basically move Simmons to 4, let him play in the dunkers spot in the 4th quarter while CJ handles the ball. For us, it balances things out, allows Roco and Harris to play 3/4 in switching scheme, and we'd get Thybulle 2 years on the cheap. I assume we'd need to add a pick but I think it'd be worth it.

Damn near everyone on the team would be a decent shooter, save for Thybulle and Nurk, and neither are a Simmons level disaster. I think you'd just minimize the time they spend on the court together (Nurk plays more with Powell, Thybulle with Collins). Importantly, if we dropped Melo and Kanter, we may not have any defensive sieves left (assuming growth from Simons and Lillard playing hard).

Lillard/Powell/Roco/Harris/Nurk
Simons/Thybulle/Little/(vet - target PJ Tucker)/Collins

To try to satisfy Dame, you bring in Frazier and Ed Davis as injury insurance.

And

Dame/Simons
Norm/Little
RoCo/Warren
Simmons/Collins
Turner/Collins

Basically your rotation is

Dame
Norm
RoCo
Simmons
Turner

with
Collins
Little
Simons
Warren

Much much much better defensive team.

@Natebishop3 ...how did you get Nurkic/Jones for Turner/Warren to be approved? We would be taking back 50% more salary. Thought that was No-No.

You know what's funny..... if you post a trade idea it will either be immediately shot down as a bad trade for our team, or it will be called unrealistic for the other team. Nothing in-between. I can think of maybe one time when I have posted a trade and nobody immediately shot it down

I'm just carrying over discussion from the CJ thread about Simmons.

You think Turner has more value than Nurk?

Quite a bit more. And Simmons for sure has more value than CJ in a 1:1 deal. Warren is also more valuable than Jones. These are both straight robbery for Portland.

Here's the framework w/o picks.

Dame
Powell
Little
Simmons
Nance

with Hill, Simons, Collins, and Jones completing the 9 man rotation. Still have some exceptions to add depth to the bench. Also, it's time to unleash Nas. Dude is primed for a breakout-- just needs a chance to play.

Does Cleveland want another center? I was under the impression that they were going to re-sign Jarrett Allen.

ah forgot Allen. Fine, replace Nance with my guy PJ Washington in Charlotte-- another guy primed for a breakout who's really a center being miscast as a PF.

The crazy thing is, Collins in theory is the perfect C next to Simmons in a front court.

You're gonna have to give me more than that. Why does Turner have quite a bit more value than Nurk?

Go gauge his value on places where it's not just Blazer fans. Nurk has significantly more injury history, and his contract is expiring. Turner is arguably a better player when he plays. He's certainly easier to fit on most teams since he's good at what you want your center to do: which is block shots. He can also space the floor.

Also, why does Indiana do that deal? If they move one of Turner/Sabonis it's to clear the way for the other guy. They aren't going to want another center back as the centerpiece.

Doesn't even get to the Jones/Warren swap. Like, come on.

I hope we are getting a boat load of picks.

was just thinking Charlotte could be a good option for nurk in a 3 team deal.

If we somehow landed Simmons, we should move him to his real position. Center.

Was not sure where to ask this?
Seems like this thread would have someone who knows?

Can someone explain to me what a "Room Exception" is. It is listed on Enes Kanter's contract. If you would like to see what i am talking about it is listed here on this site.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/POR.html

ROOM MID-LEVEL EXCEPTION -- This exception is available only to teams that drop far enough below the cap to use cap room, and therefore lose their Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level and Taxpayer Mid-Level exceptions (see question number 26). This exception cannot be used if the team already has used the Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level or Taxpayer Mid-Level exception. This exception becomes available once the team salary drops far enough that the team loses its other exceptions, and expires following the last day of the regular season. It allows a team to sign any free agent to a contract with a starting salary up to the following:

Season First-year salary
2017-18 $4.328 million
2018-19 $4.449 million
2019-20 $4.767 million
2020-21 $4.767 million
The Room Mid-Level exception amount for the 2017-18 season was negotiated into the agreement. For each subsequent season the exception amount is determined by applying the percentage change in the salary cap to the previous exception amount. For example, if the salary cap increases by 4% from 2017-18 to 2018-19, then the exception amount also will increase by 4% from 2017-18 to 2018-19.

This exception may be split and given to multiple players. It may be used for contracts up to two years in length, with raises up to 5% of the salary in the first year of the contract. Signing a player to a multi-year contract does not affect a team's ability to use this exception every year -- for example, a team can use this exception to sign a player to a two-year contract, and use it again the following year to sign another player. Also see question number 26 for more information on the availability and use of this exception.

Once a team has used this exception, it no longer can use the Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level or Taxpayer Mid-Level exception.

Nurk for Kuzma and the 22nd pick. Who says no?
