Game Thread 2022-23 Game #12 BLAZERS @ PELICANS - NOVEMBER 10, 2022 - THURSDAY - 5:00 PM (PDT) ROOT

I never saw Stotts coach his ass off on the sidelines to get guys in position defensively. I also rarely saw Stotts choose to mix up the scheme defensively. The pick and roll defense was so atrocious.

I don't know what "coach his ass off" means and I was never in the huddle or practice, but tonight isn't that night for this debate. The roster is better and I'm a Billups fan too.

yeesh, the pels subreddit is not kind to CJ right now.

didn't he almost single-handedly lead them to the playoffs last year? how soon they forget

he led them to a 14-14 record after the trade. I talk to a couple of Pelicans fans on a Duck forum. They noticed that CJ played well after he joined the Pels. But they also noticed his dribbling and ball dominance, that he shoots more than he should, and that he was a disaster in the playoffs last season. They both are really unhappy with CJ at this point in time. They also both say they miss Josh Hart, a lot. Right now, they like Nance a lot more than they like CJ

I liked Terry Stotts. He did a good job here, but, as usually happens, it was time to go. Just the way it works.
But, I will say, if Terry was Coach, I believe Dame would have played 40 minutes tonight.

And more importantly: If Olshey was here and we sat Dame & Nurk, we would've played the NOP with Bazemore, Whiteside, Melo, Gaberial, and Hezonja. I think the outcome would've been different!

Watch carefully during the games. Billups is constantly coaching players where to be on defense and during their half court sets. I see him pull players aside after a stop in action too.

Stotts would let the same things happen over and over and stand there like a deer in the headlights. He relied on hero ball to win.

Kind of make sense he hasn’t been picked up by any other team.

I wonder if he would’ve run a zone. Or if we would of got pick and popped to death.

I've watched plenty of games. I've logged thousands of hours of games across the league. I've seen Phil Jackson coach great defenses without ever yelling or standing up. I've watched Luke Walton attempt to coach his ass of by telling guys where to be. The majority of coaching happens behind the scenes.

Talent/roster continues to be the most important thing. We were awful at defense last year under Billups and he was coaching equally as hard.

I've gotta say, the way the Blazers are playing is making Chauncey look like COY and Cronin look like a genius.

Both should be near the top for awards if the season ended today, no doubt!

NOP would've done whatever they wanted against those one-dimensional players. Tonight was a great win!

We knew they'd get to see bad cj though. When his shot is not falling he's a big liability

You seem to think that schematically there’s nothing different between the two. All that matters is the players. I beg to differ. Stotts didn’t care about defense or he would’ve mixed it up instead of running the same pick and roll defense and having guys have career nights on us over and over

Remember that year where going into the season the media (maybe Quick) reported that Stotts was going to run a new scheme defensively? Only problem was he couldn’t coach it so he went back to the old same ol’ about 5 games in.

I don’t really remember Stotts even running any kind of zone. One of the main philosophies of a zone is to hide players who have defensive deficiencies.

Well CJ always benefitted from playing with robert covington.
roco was so bad, that it practically forced CJ to shoot, and shoot, and shoot, and shoot, which he would have done, anyway, but when norm powell was to be his scoring mate, it, too, forced CJ to shoot, and shoot, and shoot, and shoot.
Dunno what his reasons were tonight, but that sure was a powerful trio when they were in Portland.
Can't believe they all got traded.
Portland's GM must have gotten fleeced.

I think people on these boards have underestimated the Jerami Grant effect.

Covington two years prior to joining us was all defensive 1st team. Then, Stotts got to coaching him and taught him bad habits

In the DameCJ era Stotts never had defenders, or if he did they were useless on offense creating problems on that side of the ball. When he had a good balanced roster with Aldridge the defense was really very good.

Plenty to be happy about with the current team. Stotts wasn't the main thing holding back this franchise, although I do think Chauncey has a chance to be a better coach. Still think Stotts might be better than plenty of coaches with rings. Plus he was a great guy. Same as CJ, I'll be happy to root for them even though we've moved on.
