Yes, it’s common to lose leads in the NBA as teams run hot and cold. But if a team gets “happy” and sloppy and lackadaisical on defense like the Blazers did this game, you’ll lose a lot more than you’re fair share of leads and you’ll never win a title. Championship caliber teams instinctively step on the throat. Run of the mill teams instinctively let up.

So what teams are currently doing that? Boston would seem to be a likely candidate but they just gave up a 20-point lead to the Lakers in the 2nd half and fell behind by 13. That was a 33-point swing. They then came back and won. A game of runs for sure

I think the phrase is "in the NBA everyone makes a run" that's against championship teams and treadmill teams. We didn't give up the lead once we had it established but they did make a run to get it down to a 5 point lead and then we stepped on the throat.

I'm not saying I don't want this team to make changes. I think there needs to be changes in the way we adjust within the game, I think there needs to be changes to the roster and I think there does need to be more consistent effort/killer instinct throughout the game like Dame said the other night. We don't want to be in games where we have to get our hearts broken or break theirs. We want to finish with a big lead like we had tonight and agreeing with you we really want to do the best job we can protecting big leads when we get them and limit the runs that make games close again.

This is what I'm saying. Yeah we turned it back on in the 4th and it worked out. But you can never get back the possessions you lost in the 3rd by turnovers or lack of effort on defense. Sometimes you turn it back on and it's not enough and you lose. Turning it back on is low BBIQ. Keeping it on is high BBIQ. I know no team has it 100% on all the time but that's the goal at least.

I haven't watched enough teams to know. Every team falters in this respect to some degree but the degree matters. Sometimes you give up a big lead because the other team gets super hot and you get super cold. Last night the Blazers to me got lazy and sloppy. They willingly handed the Spurs about 10 points. We're not good enough talentwise to do that. We need some mental discipline to value every possession on both sides of the ball, even when we're up by 20 and we feel unbeatable.

I think that is a valid concern. There are some mental errors that drive me crazy. (i.e not getting a shot off at the end of the 1st half last night while having 6 seconds to do so)

The problem is the way they play this year, they are pushing it a bit more and forcing the action with our forwards. The positive of running and passing more is they are getting more easy shots. However, the downside is they turn the ball over more trying to do so. (i.e more offensive foul calls on the break) I think the good outways the bad. But that doesn't mean they can't clean some of it up.
Nurk needs to stop extending a leg when setting a pick.

Kid is an undrafted 2nd year player. I would say he is a steal for where they got him.
I agree with you. It all really depends on what people expectations are for an undrafted 2nd year player. I love him!

we must be watching completely different games. nurk is fundamentally so sound on defense. eubanks chases blocks and misses half the time while letting his teammates out to dry. it's like watching whiteside but worse cuz he can't rebound worth a damn.

a backup big is our biggest need.
It's amazing watching the same game people can have completely different views of whats going on out there. You sir lost me at "Nurk is fundamentally so sound on defense".

Listening to Spurs commentary right now. I can always respect an opposing commentary team that calls everything down the middle.
It's easy to call it down the middle when you suck. The Spurs broadcasts were notorious for 20 years of being one of the most homer calls in the league. Wow.

I'm still upset at Sean Elliot. Nothing he can do to change that.
I asked home about 10 years ago in the back tunnel if his heels were on the line, he smiled and walked off!!!!

missed the game due to work.... any cliff notes? sharpes box score looks efficient
I was just reading that they are coming out with some sort of box that will record the games of your favorite sports team if you are away from home. Standby FAMS, I'll shoot you a link.

After its all said and done.... where does lillard end up on the all time list...? top 10.... top 5? 10 seems for sure doable..... 5/3 (the one i can see) seems a lot harder...
He's what....about 10,000 points from top 10. I'm not sure about that. Proud to call him the greatest Blazer ever regardless.

if i know anything about Dame (and i think I do having followed him over the past 11 yrs as if he were a family member), i think Dame wants to get this achievement in Houston on Saturday in front of Clyde. Expecting another 40 piece in Dallas on Friday so that he gets in shot to do it at HOU on the b2b.

i know he would have rather done this at home, but this is the next best thing.
That would be cool. Was thinking the same. We found out Clyde isn't in Houston anymore. We were hoping he would be there and join us on the show. Would have been great o have him there to see it in person.

why is that? he is our best defender and very rarely makes mistakes.

This post proves my point. I could send you TONS (150gb at least) of examples of him completely missing his assignment on a pick n roll situation and the other team scores. Then walks to the bench with his head down and arms up as Billups gets in his ass.
Everyone has defensive lapses sure, but to claim to not see it, c'mon FAMS.

He's starting to take over some of Winslow's minutes.

I think Blazers are a better team with Watford playing over Winslow.

I like what they both offer for sure....just have to have the right combo out there to counter what skills they lack. I've always loved dudes you don't have to call a play for and yet can still have a positive impact out there.

Where am I wrong? I said most EXPLOSIVE. Not the best. Name another backcourt that can catch fire like Dame or Ant.
You asked if they are the “best backcourt” in the league.

I think Mitchell/Garland is currently on top with Morant/Bane and Dame/Ant close behind. But with the way Ant has been improving, I think they could leapfrog one or both duos by the end of the season.

They are similar in the way they both give us an extra ball handler at the 4 spot, which against trapping teams is much needed.
But other than that they differ in how they can help this team.

Watford is (or at least eventually will be) a better offensive player and can cover bigger players a little better. Winslow can defend a variety of SFs, along with PFs. I would also give JW the edge as an emergency playmaker.

But as HCP alluded to, it does matter who they are on the floor with. I am not sure I would play Winslow with GP2 together unless it is solely a defensive possession. That will be interesting to see play out. But my guess is that if everyone is healthy then Winslow and Watford alternate games depending on the matchups.
