Game Thread 2022-23 Game #44 - BLAZERS @ NUGGETS - JANUARY 17, 2023 - TUESDAY - 6:00 PM (PDT) ROOT

The Blazer should've tried to hammer the nuggets at the hoop.

They do this and they have a chance of getting Jokic in foul trouble. That would have helped quite a bit.
Problem with this is the Blazers don't have enough big guys to do it consistently. Sharp gets up well enough and we have seen Grant go after some dunks around the rim. Drew is active but we know what happens on defense?
Of course Nurk doesn't really dunk. His touch around the rim is questionable? Couple of charges and this works against the Blazers if he gets in deeper foul trouble.

At least we don't have to play them again this season.

We could have kept it close if we didn't have the stupid turnovers in the third and if we had got back quicker on D all game. Don't understand why Billups would say they played well. maybe worried about their confidence?

Another thing I didn't like was Nurk being all happy and being pals with Jokic after the game. Have some pride, man! This guy not only beat you our of your spot in Denver but now he beats you up every time we play them. How about getting mad?

Really?

Would we be one spot back in the conference rankings? Maybe two?

We could have let Nurk go, not made the deal for Grant, ignored Payton, traded Dame for a young starter and future picks, and I bet we'd be right around where San Antonio is... three spots and seven games worse than we are now. We could have made none of the trades that Cronin did last year, trade Dame, and I bet we'd be even better than that.

Where we are now is just about the worst. It could be interesting in the playoffs for a few games in the best case, but a season of mediocrity for a crack at that was a bad, bad plan for this year. And it's where we'll be for several years, unfortunately.

Yes, really.

Being two spots back in the rankings doesn't help your top 3 lottery chances much, there is zero indication Ant/Sharpe are worthy of being built around, and because of that it would likely be the start of a 4-5 year playoff drought with little hope we'd be a contender after that.

No, thank you.

i mean... sometimes you just gotta tip your cap

what bugged me more was chauncey doing nothing to take anything away from jokic.

he had this magical plan for doncic last week but decided to just wing it last night.

Just between me and you FAMS….. I said if the team kept our pick and didn’t trade it to bring in a vet for Dame, when we are struggling midway through the season, don’t be surprised. Really hope I’m wrong.

not being combative here...I am not following what you're saying?

what pick are you referring to?

Olshey traded away 7 first round picks. But they weren't traded for "veterans for Dame", not once; they were traded for Olshey to look like he was doing something impactful even though he wasn't.

Olshey making a trade to support Dame would have been Olshey trading CJ and three 1st round picks for Paul George or Jimmy Butler. Trading Trevor Ariza and two 1st round picks for RoCo is the 'idiotic-low-risk-cheap-screw' version, which is the direction Olshey always went

To be fair, there were times we were doubling him off the ball as much as possible given there is a defensive 3 second rule. The problem being, Denver was putting their other players in a position where our 2nd (or 3rd) help guy was 6-10" shorter than Jokic. 8 of our top 10 players are 6'6" or shorter, and one of the two who isn't weighs 210lbs. Denver on the other hand rolls out a roster where 3 of their top 4 players are 6'8" or taller and the 6'8" is stronger than our 6'8" guy. It's a rough matchup I want no part of in the playoffs, should we make it that far.

I wouldn't call that 'frustration boiling over'.

Eubanks tries hard, but he gives up way too much on the defensive side. It looked like GPII was telling him to play smarter (more patient).
Payton is talking often to players about defense. Not just Eubanks.

You really get into this shit don’t you?
First off this was a personal discussion between me and the @Tince guy….but since you butted in. Last spring all everybody talked about was the #7 pick or whatever we had was going to turn this franchise around. All @THE HCP said was that we should use that pick to bring in a vet to help dame and not use it on a player, whoever it was going to be was going to take 4 years to develop. I felt Dame would want us to do the same. And by mid season when we had a losing record, he was going to want out. Oh yeah I got killed for that opinion along with my 39 win prediction by the forum experts 2 weeks into the season.
To be honest you lost me at ,”not being combative here”.

LOL...don't try and pull the "private conversation" bullshit. If it was private you'd be on some message app or the phone. But you posted it here for everybody to read. This is a public discussion forum, not an "I'm-just-talking-to-this-guy-so-butt-out' forum

I honestly did not know what pick you were referring to...so I asked the question

as far as your predictions...yeah, I know what they were, everybody does, because you remind us about them all the time

HCP is hoping this is the year that one of his predictions is CORRECT. The odds are with him......

Denver has juuuuust a bit better of a supporting cast. Lol. But go on.

I actually thought the Blazers looked pretty good in the first half of the game, maybe because the Denver D energy wasn't high but we were doing OK defensively and getting ball movement and good shots.

2nd half, as Gramps said, we started the "stand around at the 3 pt line shit" and go one-on-one. It's particularly bad when Ant is with the 2nd unit. He goes into dribble too much mode, seems to think all the scoring must come from him and the ball movement stops. It's a horrible, frustrating style of bball that is way too common in the NBA.

Sometimes I think I might smash my fucking TV if I see Nurkic stand out at the 3 pt arc for multiple possessions while Ant dribbles the air out of the ball.

Not to bash Nurk, he gets plenty of negative reviews. He started the game well and then like many other times as soon as some adversity comes his way, his mind is blown.
I think he has a poor mental game, always feeling persecuted by refs, gets some ticky tack calls but mostly dumb fouls. Why? I think he's gassed, overweight, out of shape, whatever you want to call it. He's slow to react, can't jump and has to gather with a clear path to dunk the ball. Ridiculous for a 7 footer. But still more of a mental thing to me. He can affect a game when he's aggressive and motivated, looking like he's engaged, anticipating and energetic. Doesn't happen enough. Weird dude, plays with blinders on and never seems to know who's next to him or behind him about to strip the ball. His poor touch around the rim is in part due to this as he gets surprised a lot by late double teams and rushes. He has terrible balance it seems, falls down more than any 280lb guy I've ever seen and ends up throwing the ball at the backboard. (might be euro soccer flopping) Seriously, he needs and ballet class or yoga or something because guys glance impact him and he falls down.

Tonight the Nuggets shoot 18% from 3 in the first half. If they did that yesterday the Blazers would have blown them out.
