I actually think the initial plan was to trade the pick for an above average starter if it was 6 or 7 but once it got up to 3 they wanted an all star level player for it and when they couldn't get that, they wouldn't trade it for an above average starter because they see Scoot as being worth way more than that and they're probably right but it may cost them Dame. That being said if trading Dame is the best move for this franchise going forward the GM has to be willing to do that, as fans we can afford to be more emotional but I think GMs need to be shrewd.Yeah I do think this is a major possibility. Not so much Scoot specifically - that the team was aiming to trade the pick for an above average starter to pair with Dame. That wasn't available, so they are now pivoting all the way to a rebuild and basically putting Dame into a position he feels forced to ask out.
I don't think Cronin ever lied as some claim; there are so many grey areas with these statements and conditional ones. They can say "we are trying" to build a contender around Dame when they will only offer the pick for way more value then its worth. They aren't lieing, but it doesn't mean they are being totally transparent or committing all the way to building with Dame. Just because you don't lie, doesn't mean you are telling the most accurate complete truth.
