I think you missed the main point. I think Houston made a mistake as well by giving him that contract. However, 4 months ago Toronto could've got some assets for FVV, but instead, lost them for nothing, then panicked, and overpaid for a replacement that doesn't fit their needs.

They might be setting up to do the same thing with OG.

I'm just skeptical that he had value. Look at his stats. If Ant has no value, I don't know why FVV would have value.

12 guards? nah......we have 3 7 ft guys, Nurk, Butler and Badji...and we're not even close to having a full roster yet.
Quick: how many points do non-Nurk big guys have in the NBA? Answer: 45.

I think that banking on two undrafted and entirely unproven 20 year-old seven footers ... that's silly. They may be good some day, but why are we spending so much on an undersized power forward in order to win games if we are not going to add any help at the 4 or 5 spots?

And, yes, the free agency period is not over but, "not even close to having a full roster yet" seems like something someone who's totally unaware of the date and state of the team would say.

badji and butler are the second coming of ibaka and chet. how dare you?

Clearly FVV had value to Houston. I'd be shocked if Toronto couldn't have got a pick or two for him. Unless Cronin extracted max value for Hart.

I'm not sure how one could come to this conclusion.

If I had to assume, I'd guess Grant not re-signing would greatly impact his willingness to stay.
I agree that if Grant left, Dame would be out the door too.

However, just because Grant is returning does not mean that Dame will also be back.

Those two statements are not mutually exclusive.

Well that's all fine but banking on young cheap contract 7 ftrs that have been in the system is part of the game...Watford was on a two way and broke out ...these guys can make the leap...Badji I've read is ready to show what he's got and I'd take him over a Boogie Cousins about now. I think you'll see a bigger team and better bench come preseason. If Mike Schmitz thinks Badji and Butler deserved qualifying offers and Eubanks and Watford needed to walk...I'm going to trust Schmitz. As to the date...it's June 30th...we have time to construct a roster...it isn't all happening in one day.

it's Schmitz. who is Mike Schmidt?

If we re-sign Matisse, give roster spots to Badji and Butler and sign all three rookies which seems like a given since they were all on our big board as lottery picks, then we will have 12 roster spots filled. I really hope there are trades but I don't know what to expect from Cronin and worry he would actually just sign two more guys one might even be under 6'5" and call it good.

I think that would cause Dame to demand a trade but I can't be sure of that either. Weird time to be a fan of the Blazers.

Grant agreeing to this contract has no impact on Dame staying.

You might want to reread what you said in the first post I responded to.

I agree the Grant signing doesn't mean Dame will be back. I disagree that it has no impact. The only way your first statement can be true is if you think Dame is gone regardless of what happened with Grant.

I stand corrected, I mispell his name often..not an uncommon mistake bro...I went back and fixed them for you but really I think you knew who I meant

I have to stop myself EVERY time I write it out.

Have now...

$100m more than Grant!

Grant at 32M/year makes me gag a little. Haliburton is a better player, but I don't think he'd 20M/year better. My hunch is that if we could see some of the contracts given out in 2025, the first year of the new media deals, and see them now, eyes would pop out of heads

for instance, if the cap is 180M, a max designated 5 year deal would be 365M; that's 73M/year. Could you live on 73M/year?

any backtracking on your stance of ant being overpaid?

have a look at the desmond bane deal that just came through.

That's a situation I would like to find out and get back to you about!

pretty sure I have explained to you before that my primary criteria for gauging Ant's contract was the cap-space market last summer, when he signed, not some generic 'look at this guy' gauge. There were no teams last summer that were going to give Ant 18M/year, not to mention 25M/year (IIRC, only 4 teams had more than 20M in cap-space)

if you want me to change my mind on Ant's contract, change Ant's ability to play defense...and maybe help him grow 3 inches

Nope.

Would have to have some tough conversations.

That's paycheck-to-paycheck.

Such a struggle.

if you made $73,000 a year, it would only take you 1000 year to earn 73M. That would be quite a grind. But you would have a lot of sick leave built up

gotta hand it to you for sticking to your guns :)

Considering the guys they let go today (or yesterday?) and not signing any new guys yet today, my guess is that Cronin is working on something big. Possibly has to wait to see what team got left out in free agency bidding and also where Harden goes and who he gets traded for. If somehow things go well, then I think there might be a good trade that might make us happy. If things don't go well, then the team will probably look much the same and they will pick up a few minimum players to fill out the roster. And then try again at the trade deadline....
