I think we'll learn a lot about the direction of the team after we see who they draft. I believe that last season, Cronin thought they could go with just a re-tool, not a rebuild. But he found out that even when Grant, Brogdon and Simons were healthy, we still weren't very good. Maybe Billups helped talk him into trying the re-tool.
I don't Cronin think is a stupid guy; he can see they need to add more and he knows that next year is a lot better draft. So my guess is that he will go for maximum upside with all his picks and will keep all four to give him the best chance of hitting the jackpot. If they really like a guy, I think they will trade up to get him, but will try to use veterans to do that, not draft picks.

I have a hunch that Billups does not really want to go this route and has told Cronin this. I think it's possible that Cronin told Billups that if he wanted to put out feelers for a job with a more established lineup, that was OK. This might explain the situation with letting some coaches go and not replacing them. I think it's possible Cronin would not have been too unhappy if Billups had found another job.

Is there any evidence that my thoughts have validity or are they just projections of what I wish would happen? :)
Joe & Chauncey have a unique buddy system. They were both new to their jobs when hired by the Blazers. They're still on a learning curve, so they are exempt from Blazer fan criticism.

we've seen about 50 different Blazers walk in & out the door in Cronin's first 3 years. Cronin just brought 60 college kids to Portland for tryouts. If you like variety, then the Blazers are the team for you.

How is Billups supposed to develop any sort of successful coaching patterns without a clear runway? We've already heard Cronin admitting he didn't deal Chauncey a good hand. It's rare to have a GM take all the pressure off the head coach by admitting there were trade and roster building mistakes.

Coach said he wants to win. Cronin said he wants to win too. Then the GM backtracked at end of season presser. Joe is trying his best to be positive, but he couldn't smooth the cake after the team he built went 6-28 (.170) in the final 3 months of the season.

Team Captain Simons said he wants to win more, the losing is bugging him a bit. But not enough to demand a trade or anything, Ant just wants what Billups wants. Too many opponents are shredding Cronin's inexperienced/experimental rosters. The young man has tanked 3 years straight. Over 50 games of getting told to rest, so his team can lose on purpose. With even more of this tanking garbage on the horizon. Getting paid to be an NBA cheerleader might be embarrassing for Simons. He's going to need a bigger bag.

Let's tank one more year!

Let's tank one more year!
it's the Happy Hornets of the West.
If there's no Brandon Miller this year, try again next summer, or the next summer. No pressure, there's endless summers for the Trail-Bob-cat-zers.

If his camp is truly saying he’s hurt, it could be a play to try to have him fall to 8.

What did that last posted X say? It says something went wrong when I click on it. Did someone get hurt?

RR7 -- so if I understand that he DID workout on the 1st one but was coming back for like a private workout but cancelled that one ??

Some unsubstantiated and now deleted tweet alleged that Salaun hurt his ankle in his Spurs workout. Then it went on to say that Salaun would as a result miss workouts some of which he had already done, one being his workout with us.

The tweet was bullshit. Salaun very well could have hurt his ankle and may not workout for the last two teams on his list but this guy had shit wrong and that's why the tweet isn't up anymore.

maybe you need to step away for a few days.
thread police !! did HCP rob a bank then walk into a donut shop ??
Telling fans how to fan is full on Blazers Edge horse dookie. Let's keep it real, it's OK to speak from the heart. All opinions accepted.

I believe it was reported the Blazers did not allow Phoenix permission to interview Billups.

I think calling for a pure tank job this early is premature until we see what Cronin and co. do in the next 30 days or so then we can evaluate how hard of a tank they do. I realize the next draft is loaded as BEEP but I think just going out and acting like you do not care if ya win does a disservice to the young players in the long run.

I think the best idea is to put a roster out there that doesn't have Ant, Jerami or Malcolm who could all get us wins if we're playing for wins. Get rid of those guys for either guys with upside or future draft considerations and then you can have all of our young guys give it their best effort the entire season and we'll still likely end up with a pretty good lotto spot. Guys can lose games and still learn lessons that will help them win in the future.

I don't want to see our team sitting our best players for the last two months of the season again, I want those last two months to be a continuation of the learning process the entire season has been. Straddling the fence between a youth rebuild and whatever the fuck you want to call giving the keys to the franchise to Ant and Jerami is a disaster. Hopefully one that is soon remedied.

Are you saying I'm being the thread police or HCP is, because, if it's the former, you're off-base. HCP is the one telling fans over and over not to be talk about this draft or get excited about this draft or post about this draft. I'm the one telling him this is a fan forum and if he doesn't like fans posting about the team it's not worth his while to come to a fan message board.

I hope you recognized the context and were agreeing with me. If you were, my apologies. If you weren't, it probably would be worth your while to go back and read the thread a little more closely.

The way I see it @THE HCP is just driving home the consensus that this draft is weak. It has a few high floor role players that won't win a team any games on their own (Knecht, da Silva, Edey, McCain, etc.) and then it has a bunch of guys that have low floors and possibly high ceilings who are all going to be projects if they ever are real difference makers.

The reason @THE HCP is doing this is he wants to be able to tell people in this forum to shut the fuck up if they start whining about our picks from this draft not making a difference this upcoming season or even further into the future.

That is a good way to put it, but then I look at the past 2 drafts and I don't see that happening there either other than the #1 picks.

In 2022 maybe the Chet as well, but after that maybe Sharpe?

In 2023
Wemby for sure but then who? Probably too early to tell but still......

I try not to jump into any debate.
Have at it ya'll.

There's going to be negativity after arguably the worst losing season in team history.

The tanking, the embarrassing losses, the bad basketball... it takes a toll.

The ping pong balls in a mediocre draft class were hopefully going to be #1 & 8. They rolled off the table and landed in the cat water bowl.

Now this "NBA" fan forum turned into an NCAA fan forum. It is difficult to navigate through the 300 different mocks & drafts and trade machine discussions, with regular topics morphing into mocks & drafts & trade discussions.

It does seem like overkill in a draft that the Blazers got hosed in. But I'm not going to tell folks to knock it off. I just watch the games. I have 0 scouting skills, and 0 GM skills.

Emotions are what make the Blazer fanbase great. It's up to the Franchise to make the team good again, not fans telling other fans to take a hike.

We all need each other through this tough rebuild. I just want peace & tranquility, not ninja shurikens getting lobbed at each other.

let's call Sookakis and ask for a replay... referee Whyachi has determined double techs, no ejection necessary.

go Blazers!

This ^ has nothing to do with the post you commented on. You're literally coming down on me telling HCP to let forum members talk about their team by saying we need to let forum members talk about their team.

Good grief. You can agree with his sentiment that this is a weak-looking draft. But he's using that sentiment as an avenue to take shots at fans for having interest in the draft.

Stop it with the both sides baloney. You agreed with him except that you were agreeing with the point I made. Instead of trying to save face, just say "My bad" and bow out a little more gracefully.

If you have to go through this level of mental gymnastics to defend HCP coming down on fellow forum members every couple of days, then he's doing it wrong.

Could there be a Zach Edey and Canada reunion?
The one green room invitee who turned down his invitation is Purdue's Zach Edey, who plans to watch the draft from home. Edey has slowly crept up draft boards and seems to have been particularly helped by the NBA draft combine, where he demonstrated impressive agility and speed for his 7-2 frame.

The draft predictor model gives Edey quite a large range, with a 90% chance he goes somewhere from picks Nos. 12 to 21. The Toronto Raptors have picks No. 19 and No. 31. Their need at center isn't immediate, with Jakob Poeltl and Kelly Olynyk both under contract, but if they like Edey, they'll likely need to take him at No. 19. He has a 29% shot at being on the board at No. 19, but a less than 1% chance to still be around at No. 31. Edey, 22, was born in Toronto and lived there until he was in high school.
