Henry Abbott, TrueHoop: A plugged in source just told me that the Blazers are done, and will not be making any moves before the deadline.

Of course, a great offer at the last minute could change that, but that's considered unlikely.

Oh well.

Part of this, I think, is that they have been driving a hard bargain. Another part of is that they are in a position to use Raef LaFrentz's cap room this summer, plus their new trade exception, when the market will be depressed thanks to the economy. Portland will likely be able to make either a lopsided trade or a free-agent signing.

Another part of it is that I'm convinced Portland gets into some trade talks as pure intelligence gathering.

By negotiating with the Nets about Vince Carter, the Bucks about Richard Jefferson, the Bulls about Luol Deng, the Kings about John Salmons, the Bobcats about Gerald Wallace -- and a zillion other such talks -- the Blazers get real insight into what everybody really wants. They get to fill in the the blanks about the 29 other team strategies. It's like seeing the other team's playbook.

I don't necessarily put much stock in this until the deadline passes. That kind of statement could be one of those classic "walk away and expect a better offer to pull you back" moves.

I don't know that it's a smokescreen. I think it just might be to let everyone know that they're serious.

A team will step up and give the Blazers what they want or they won't get what they want from Portland.

The Blazers are in a position of strength here, and all it takes is for one of the teams they're talking to to blink.

I want a trade, but as I've been saying it seems this hard-line stance will result in great success or no deal.

Thank god. That Frye for Carter deal was fucking horrible. If that went through i would have gone to Thorn's house and burn it down

You really can't expect to get what you want in a negotiation unless you are willing to walk away. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see something happen. You know the deals are on the table and all it takes is a two-minute phone call to get it done.

Agreed. Despite the opinions of some of our more (ahem) excitable posters, we don't NEED a trade here. We shouldn't be the ones revising our offer -- the other teams who are desperate to clear bad money off of their books should be the ones scrambling.

You never saw the Godfather desperately calling up his family: "Can I do you a favor? Please?"

Yep. I see nothing wrong with the Blazers taking their ball and going home. Of course, somebody can chase them down the street and try and convince them to come back, but it will be on Blazer terms. I still haven't left the house...lol

Is that true? Could two teams agree verbally, call it into the league, and all the paperwork follows?

I had imagined that the paperwork is already filled out for half a dozen deals, and just a few insertions or deletions would be done by hand to finalize -- but that the deadline means the *paperwork* has to be received by the league by the deadline.

Does anyone know how it really works?

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, for obvious reasons. :devilwink:

Can we just make this the official "I hate my life/Blazer rant thread" for people who think this is doomsday if we dont make a trade?

Without a trade the season is a FAILURE!
Without a trade WE WON'T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND BRANDON ROY WILL LOSE BOTH OF HIS FEET!
Without a trade WE ARE THE WORST TEAM TO EVER PLAY BASKETBALL!

Sad, but true! :sigh:

Have more faith in your GM: he's one of the best in the business. If that deal had gone down (and who knows if it was ever more than an internet rumor) then the ones to blame would've been the owners.

aboott knows as much as the hot dog vendor

please... "his blazer sources"

Expected and grossly inaccurate response.

No this is a huge failure. IMO with this situation this year, this is equivelent to letting a major free agent walk for nothing in other years.

Someone needs to tell MM that his firewall has a hole in it and Mixum took his computer over.

No problem, just unplug the problem AT THE SOURCE.

If they decide they aren't going after a big name SF, then the front office needs to at least bring in short term depth at SF.

Last news on Webster was another delay before that boot comes off.

I love Batum, but the Blazers can't approach a playoff run 1 1/2 SFs deep, with the 1 being a 19 year old.

Blazers have at least add a short term rental depth at SF. Just some fairly cheap veteran SF with an expiring contract will do.

As I understand it, the trade exception cannot be used to add into a trade with other pieces, it can only be used by itself, to trade for a player or a draft choice, without involving a player from our team. The economy is already in the tank, I don't think there is any advantage to waiting until summer and I still will be very surprised if we do not trade today. If we are going to trade for an impact player like Wallace or Jefferson, let's do it now and insure we make the playoffs this year. Part of building a championship team is learning to play playoff ball, and the sooner we start learning, the better.

Incase you haven't noticed, every team we are dealing with is standing up to KP more than anyone has before and are driving just as hard of a bargain as we are. I doubt KP blinks at all, but if for some reason he does it will be at 11:59 pst.

Not taking advantage of the current econmic situation, which we can't do after the season, would be a failure IMO.

In no other type of market can you get players like Wallace, VC, Jefferson or others for a package that centers around Raef Lafrentz.

Yeah, I guess the most disappointing thing is all the hype and all the rumors that surrounded our team, which were probably all legit in that we were talking to a ton of teams, over the past week, we all figured a deal would get done. And then to see just a wimper and a trade exception come out of it, it's a little disheartening to me.

But it's all right I guess.
