I really don't think you can look at Dame as an example for endorsements in Portland. Dame is the exception, not the rule.

Dame was the ROY. Whiteside was not.

Dame is a 2x All-Star and 2x All-NBA, Whiteside is not.

Dame is amazing at social media and self-promotion. He has music and he is very interactive with twitter on 4 bar fridays.

Dame also has an epic moment that brought him to the forefront with the series winning shot against Houston.

Last, but not least, it is EXTREMELY difficult for big men to get endorsements. Outside of Shaq, who was extremely unique, how many other centers get massive endorsement deals?

Where exactly are the extra endorsements coming from? I live in Los Angeles and I never see any of the current Lakers being promoted on TV. If they are, it is small potatoes. Whiteside does not have the personalty to sell anything. DeRosan might because guards and wings get better shoe deals than centers.

This article states one of the reasons is if you sign with a chinese shoe company, they love the lakers as a team. Which makes sense because the lakers are a national brand. Blazers? Not so much.

When one of my buddies joined the air force, he met guys that asked him where he came from. He told them portland and they had no idea where that was. They barely even knew who the trailblazers were. I think people have lost sight of what the typical Portland endorsement deal is like. Dame and CJ are unique. They are self-promoters on an elite level. Most NBA players are uncomfortable in front of a camera. They were super cool in an informal setting, but if you put them in front of a camera or started asking them serious questions, they go into robot mode. LaMarcus Aldridge is a PERFECT example of this. The dude was arguably the best power forward in the league for a while there. His endorsements were some shit like Wilsonville Toyota and some shitty Mexican beer. Meanwhile, Blake Griffin is dunking over Kias.

Some guys are personable, and some are not. Aldridge had the unfortunate trifecta of being an introvert, having an extremely vanilla game, and playing for one of the smaller markets.

Again, I think CJ is like Dame. We are just fortunate enough to have two guys cut from a similar cloth, but that doesn't mean that a guy like Whiteside could come here and replicate their success.

I actually think Howard could piggy back off Dame and CJ though. He had the type of personality that does well nationally. If he bought into what we're trying to do, he might get some of that stardom back.

2) Are you interesting off the court?

You either have to be a highlight reel like Jordan/Blake Griffin/Etc

Well, first of all, interviews with Silver or segments on NBATV are not endorsements. That's a whole other subject. That's just CJ being really good at self promotion, but with that said, where is CJ's huge shoe deal? Where is his State Farm commercials? I think the articles on the subject pretty much do dispute it.

Again I go back to a daily radio show in Los Angeles. (Mason and Ireland ESPN radio Los Angeles) Two of the biggest Laker homers on radio. (Because it is the Laker radio station)

This topic comes up all the time......and if they have changed their minds on this subject....... then that says a lot. They used to go on and on about the advantage of a big market in luring free agents. Now they give strong evidence on why the digital age has eliminated that advantage. Eventually you will change your mind too

It still makes a difference playing in portland vs. La.

Rubbing elbows with hollywood people can open other doors for you too. A guy like lebron is going to rub hollywood elbows regardless. Whiteside is not lebron. There are probably people in hollywood that dont even know who he is. If he became a blazer, they would probably continue to not know who he is. Signing with la, he is destined to make those connections and networks regardless of how awkward or suave he would be.
