Are the Blazers Boring?

In addition to lacking size and muscle, this team also lacks chemistry, synergy, intensity, and identity.
Watching them play is like being forced to listen to your parents Perry Como records.
YES THEY ARE MORE THAN BORING.

Dame was never Garnett-level. Garnett was a unicorn. The nearest thing to him since is either Anthony Davis or perhaps Evan Mobley. And the thing about him is: he changed the game on defense even more than offense. Dame is a great scorer. That's it. (On the court, that is. He's definitely unique as a franchise representative off the court.) Like I said, the best comp for Dame is Reggie Miller.
Reggie as a shooting guard was masterful coming off screens a shooting the ball. he played off ball a lot more than Dame. I think Reggie also was made out more as a leader on the floor.

For me, a big part of the problem is that Dame, while fun to watch play, is pretty sour personality-wise.

I'd so much rather cheer for someone like Steph Curry, who actually seems to enjoy basketball and life, than Dame, who despite his talents and successes seems borderline depressed and/or angry.

I'm going to do the unwise and take a barfo post at face value. It got me wonderin', though: which Blazer throughout our history has been most full of joie de vivre? The most happy-go-lucky, "let's play two!" kind of personality? Travis Outlaw perhaps?

I have to take issue with Curry: I love the guy off the court, but he drives me nuts on court with all the showboating, combined with whining about non-calls. But I can't really think of a star who doesn't whine about calls, though - goes with the territory, I guess.

It starts with ownership. This team not owned by someone who cares about the game. Zero passion for the game. An owner SHOULD feel competitive with other owners. If my team sucks, I am a bad owner that doesn’t know the sport; in over my head. The Blazers don’t even have a real owner anymore without Allen. Vulcan is pretty much a robot owner. Zero fucks given about winning. Just make money.

Anyone on this board would kill to own a team; a dream come true, think about it and let it sink in for a sec. Did Jody/Vulcan ever dream of being an owner? They don’t fucking care about the sport.

I'm not at all sure I'm remembering them accurately (misty water-colored memories...), but I'd nominate Uncle Cliffy, Jerome Kersey, or Brian Grant. Since the comparison is to Dame, it needs to be someone who was at least close to being a star, which I think excludes Outlaw.

YES they are boring and have been for years with their ISO ball and shitty ass D
I disagree FAMS! This team has been one of the most high scoring teams for years. We had so many huge exciting comebacks over the last 9 years. Of course had our D not been so shitty, there would be no need for comebacks, but then again, we wouldn't know what DameTime was all about! This current team is unwatchable.....and I HAVE to watch!

I'd rather listen to this record on repeat than watch any more of this version of the Blazers.

(admittedly, I picked this song because I didn't expect to end up liking it)

It's not lost on me that the Blazers are definitely killing me softly, and have been for 40+ years now.

We are boring to watch right now, that is for sure. However we have a new GM for the first time in nine and a half years. That could be pretty exciting. I really do think that Joe Cronin either has to relegate himself to being an assistant GM going forward or make an exciting move or moves to lift this team out of obscurity. If Joe does nothing or only pulls an Olshey deck shuffling bullshit move by the deadline then yeah we're boring for the rest of this season and will probably make the playoffs just to get swept out.

I just don't think Cronin can honestly see that as an option though. He has to see this as his big shot to prove he can do what is necessary to make a team relevant in this league. A shot to go from a career underling to a guy known throughout the league as a GM to be taken seriously.

So I am very bored with the product that I see on the court and almost even more bored by the idea of the product that we could see on the court very shortly that has our entire roster healthy and playing but I'm excited by the very real possibility that our roster will look extremely different in seven weeks.

Boring? Probably. Unwatchable? Do you not remember Mike "Confucius" Rice?"

Yes I do. I also remember Pete Pranica and Pat Lafferty. Doesn't mean that Mike Rice's shtick didn't get old.

Ah - so you mean "shows emotion" rather than "happy-go-lucky". I think of Brian Grant as intense rather than easy-going. Yeah, the worst offender, then, is CJ. I agree, I want somebody to be happy when things are going well and ready to fight when needs be. Magic, for all his faults, and for all his whining about calls (he may have been the greatest of all complainers) genuinely played with joy. More of that, please.

Yes, maybe so. I think Dame being a continual sourpuss is showing emotion - it's just that my perception of his emotional state doesn't match my perception of his reality. Maybe he's sometimes smiling on the inside, I don't know. And yes, even though I was no fan of Magic because he was a Laker, he did seem to enjoy the game. Same for Shaq, for that matter.

I'm about to be roasted but I think any team built around Dame is likely to be boring. Now, if it won, we wouldn't care, but I fell in love with the Drexler team that led the league in rebounding and fast-breaking. Drives me berserk whenever Dame walks it up the court. I can forgive a slow-it-down game if the team is a rock-solid defensive team, but no team with Dame on it is likely to be.

I am so ready to rip off the bandaid. Just trade him for Ben Simmons (BPA - and every other contender has no good picks to trade us) and let's get this reboot started.

I applaud you for having the wrong take. Way to go!

I am so glad somebody finally said this. I mention this to my pals and they think I'm nuts. "Gotta love Dame!" He's just so much into the thuglife mentality imo. It's how he grew up, I get it, but damn...smile sometimes bro!

I've thought that too. That is what is fun about Nas....he smiles, sometimes erupting in passion and energy. Of course, it is because he is young, but I still see that joy in the aforementioned Curry. CJ will smile at times, so will Nurk, but Dame comes across like he is not very happy on the court. It's not that he doesn't love the game, because you don't put that much work and effort in to something you don't love. It just doesn't come out in a joyous manner on the court.

No, they aren't boring. I find an imploding team more frustrating than boring.

This.

To me, sadly, Norm epitomizes this. He feels like an expensive rental, even though he is not. Nice guy, nice player, blah, blah, blah. Zach never played much, but he always felt like a Blazer though and through. Norm seems like a guy getting a paycheck. Th whole team is going through the motions actually (except you know who.)
100%. Definitely not a great “team” feeling or atmosphere. It’s like 10 Afflalos running around.

Honestly, I think Rasheed Wallace fits the bill the best. Because of all his technicals and arguing, and the way he left the team, I think people's perception of his "mood" was angry and/or apathetic, but I think until near the end, Wallace expressed a lot of joy when things were going well and, yes, was stormy when things didn't go his way. He was basically an open book emotionally, but I always thought of him as an extremely expressive star. Rather like Kevin Garnett in that way.

He's been like that his entire career.

Not everyone smiles when they are doing something they love. They are concentrating. People concentrate differently, too.

Watch drummers. They are up there doing what they love. Some are smiling, some are not. But its joy all the way around. Just shown differently.

When dame hits big shots he doesn't smile but I bet if you asked him in a candid moment he was overcome with emotion.

Remember after the Denver playoff series the emotion he had coming off the court? Different than most.

Not everyone shows their emotions on their sleeves. Both are justified and okay and doesn't mean one cares more or one is not happy.

Yep. We can agree to agree about Sheed.

I would submit Dame shows emotion. It's just that it is usually the mean mug, his bottom lip out, and acting like he is mad at anyone and everyone. Not saying that is right, wrong, or otherwise, just that is the way it is. Instead of smiling and being elated and running to your team, he iswaving off the other team with a 'how dare you' look on his face, or the mean mug while everyone else is jumping up and down.

Fair?

I don't understand why it feels this is a slight on dame, then? In your original post it felt like a slight towards him because he's not "Happy" on the court and that is somehow a negative towards dame. Lol. That's where my confusion lies now.
