NPR was first. All stations based on NPR's report. Fox said their OWN sources (3 of them) have confirmed the death of the congresswomen.

It is a big sway of emotions after I changed it to MSNBC and saw them interviewing the sheriff and hospital spokesman. (I don't watch MSNBC, and actually do watch Fox)

I've read the online stories, and they suggest that the suspect in custody is a schizophrenic. His social media accounts are riddled with no discernible political theory. He talks of conscience dreaming, people's misuse of the English grammar structure, and his ability to use mind control. He speaks about being the treasurer of a new American currency, he goes on and on about the gold standard and government brainwashing.

It appears neither his school or any parent directed him to a psychiatrist or a mental health treatment facility. He lacked any legitimate outlet for this thinking. He doesn't appear to be connected to any group of like-minded individuals.

He's an undiagnosed, mentally unstable loner. Where do you go with that? Sure, you can blame Fox News or Sarah Palin. That would be easy, since one of his victims was Democratic congresswoman. However blaming Fox News is too easy. The reality is more complex, and I hope both Republicans and Democrats refrain from over politicizing this tragedy for political gain.

The guy is obviously psycho, and this complicates matters for people who are trying to apply lessons from this tragedy to wider social issues. But, if I had to guess, I would say that the culture of violence and fear that the far right has injected into politics had to have some influence on this guy.

The thing to remember is this: psychos don't work in a vacuum. They take just as much input as mentally stable people do. How they process the input they receive is what sets them apart. I'm not a clinical psychologist, so I can't say how this particular crazy person was interpreting what he was seeing. Either way, I would rather not have anyone, insane or otherwise, be exposed to politicians suggesting violence is somehow productive.

We're just playing arm chair psychiatrist here but I think there is some merit to what Hoojacks wrote. The Virginia Tech shooter referenced "martyrs like Eric and Dylan" ( Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine High School shooters) in one of his videos. In the middle of the civil rights movement Charles Manson predicted an apocalyptic race war.

The left is doing nothing here than using this tragedy to silence their critics and try to pass some blame.

To be fair the right is doing the same thing. The Tea Party Express issued a statement calling the shooter a "leftist"LINK
