Comments about the Moda Center and the new management taking the fun out of the experience. The games have changed some this year in that there is more emphasis on basketball and less on noise and glitz and filler. This is because you asked for it. They did research. This is what you wanted. So, there's that.

It's very much what I wanted and I'm happy to hear it. Of course, I don't know if I'll ever pay to go to the Rhoda Garter again, but if someone gives me free tickets I'll definitely enjoy enduring less crapola.

Dave from B-edge touched on that -- hip-hop is out, country/80's pop is in.

hahaha wow this whole 100 level fan bashing really just sounds like a lot of jealousy. grrrrrow up ladies or grow some balls and tell them to shut up

I've always had a liking to the 200 level crowd. Many get food with their tickets and seem so much more peaceful and easy going than the other fans. :)

Well, thank you for noticing. Us 200 level peeps enjoy our occasional frozen yogurt cup and laugh at the bandwagon road team fans that sit nearby and leave early.

Speaking of leaving early, it always amazes me how many people will leave early even if the game isn't wrapped up, whether we're the team ahead or the team behind.....especially from the 100 level. Stay and support your team!

agreed. I stay until the final whistle, no matter what. I did it when we were blowing out Chicago on Rose's first trip here ( I think we won by 40... It was the game where Noah completely posterized Oden.)

And also for blow out losses.

But, again, I will never understand why people leave when it's close. Who cares if you're in traffic? Park at the lloyd center and walk to the Rose Garden. That's what I always do. Then, when you walk back, by the time you get there they'll be no traffic.

I did the same thing with the Hops this year. Stay until the last out. I was at the 19 inning game this year. That was nuts... and people were leaving by the 14th inning. It was a day game, start time was 1:05, You get free fucking baseball!! It ended at 7 PM, and it was a Sunday. I still got home and did everything I needed to do. It was awesome.

Yep, I actually park in the area of 6th and 7th around Oregon or Irving. It's a short walk to the game and there's no traffic to get back onto 84 at all.

This was a long thread and my attention faded about page 2, but I want pipe in on some of the comments raised here. I am a season ticket holder. This is my 18th year. In addition, I have been managing the season tickets for the company where I work. I have a pretty good idea how the casual NBA fan approaches the NBA. It's been the same for the past 15 years since I started handling my company's season tickets. The casual fan doesn't even think about the Blazers until after Christmas. Too much competition from college football and NFL, and now MLS. If they do think about NBA, it is never for games against the Eastern Conference (Detroit) or teams with no stars (Sacramento). So, it is too soon to make judgments about sell-outs and waning fan bases. They will be back.

Personally, I don't know if I have it in me to invest all the time and energy it takes to follow this team. I survived the dark years of dysfunction. And then Oden happened. That opened a big sore, then Roy happened and that picked at that sore, and the lock out ... oh the lock out just killed any joy I had following the Blazers. That sore caused by the lock out is still festering. I don't imagine I am alone in treading cautiously.
Scarlett: Thanks for popping in. I shall rep you now! :)

Glad somebody brought this up. As a fan watching on TV from the East Coast, I've been noticing a lot of empty seats at the home games. I'm actually a bit shocked by the whole thing. This is VERY unusual for Portland. The Blazers have been packing the house almost every season since they joined the league.

The fans are coming back. I can get behind this team.

It was the loudest so far this year in the Garden. Everyone got jacked up after that T-Rob putback dunk, especially. I love these games where I'm walking out onto the concourse after the game and random fans walk by offering up high-fives. Fuck yeah.

RIP CITY BABY.

Now for a negative - with 11.3 seconds left, and we had the ball after the timeout..............people were leaving. Am I shitting you? No, it really happened. I say to them - stay far, far away. Don't come back if you're treating my team like that.

It's a little forced though, with the same chants happening at the same times...every game. It's not organic.

gotta jump in here. I'm not adding this as a Soccer is better thread etc etc.

But are you referring to Timbers matches here? The only songs that are sang at the same time every match are "You are My Sunshine" at the 80th minute and "Wise Men Say/Cant Help Falling in Love" at the 85th minutes, and both have deeply rooted traditions why they are sung at that time.

I'm curious to your thoughts on how its not organic. For me its quite the opposite. Its incredibly organic with fan led support without any help from the Front Office or a jumbotron with a fake animal telling us when to say Defense, and Lets Go Blazers clap clap clapclapclap, and followed by George Foreman telling me when I need to get loud and "Grill 'em"

(for the record not blasting you here... honestly am interested to hear differing opinions.

This was my first game watching live in about 4 years so I am not some expert. But, in my opinion, the first 3 quarters were quiet as fuck. It seemed a bit strange to me. But the 4th quarter was loud. It really made me feel more involved in the game. There were obviously the planned chants and such, but there were also a few impromptu "let's go Blazers" chants that were awesome. I also got about 10 high fives from the people sitting in my section.

And I agree, anyone who leaves during a close game with 11 seconds left is someone who should stay away from the arena.

Why is the soccer season that long with that amount of games?

Injuries is one reason. With games where you dont sub yourself in and out when you are tired, playing that a few games a week, leads to injuries, and awful play.

Also for example most other leagues that have 20 clubs play eachother once home and away for 38 games, then they also have anywhere from 3-5 competitions that go on along the same time as their seasons (Champions League matches (Champs league is like a super tournament from all the top performing teams of the leagues in each continent) Other domestic cups as well) If you are a good enough club you can find yourself deep in multiple tournaments while juggling your League season.

Take this stat from Barcelona from 2012 (one of the best clubs in the world)

A total of 62 possible games

The 2012/13 season, just like in Guardiola’s first and third seasons on the Barça bench, FC Barcelona could play a total of 62 official matches. 30 in the Liga, 13 in the Champions League, 9 in the Cup and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup. The Azulgranas will not feature in the Club World Cup or the European Super Cup (three matches).

http://www.fcbarcelona.com/football...n/2011-2012/they-ve-played-nearly-every-match

That right there is averaging more than a match a week and that doesnt take into account 2 month break in a year, and fifa international weeks off (so players can play for their national teams for World Cup Qualifying, etc) Fifa break for example is why there are 2 weeks in between Timbers Playoff match vs RSL coming up on the 24th.

Just trying to give some examples on why it can be misconceiving that there are short Soccer seasons

I don't understand the 100 level stereotype. For the past 3 seasons, unless I'm sitting in mgb's seats, I've bought 100 level tickets. And every game the people around me have been loud, screaming and chanting along with me, and giving random high fives and making conversation. And standing up. Maybe I just got lucky?

I know the history behind them, but if you do them EVERY game, that is the exact definition of not organic. There's nothing new about the stuff they chant.

When crowds cheer or get loud because they saw a great play or want the team to play better/salute the team, that's one thing. But the "at this moment, we do this song..at this moment we do the Tetris thing.." blah blah blah..that's forced.

I know it's what soccer fans do, but it's kind of like how at Winterhawks games, the crowds are so-so, unless the screen tells them to. Even when the team is doing good.

When the Blazers are playing well, they're cheering and chanting "defense" (btw, is there a lamer chant in the world than "defense"?)

I'm not saying Timbers fans aren't good fans, or anything. Just saying if you had section 314 (wasn't that the section?) that handed out a song sheet that said at the 20th minute of the game, no matter the score, you had to sing "Portland 'Blazers, we adore you...Portland 'Blazers, for you I sing" and dance, even if the team is down by 15 and playing like shit, it's forced.

it's easier to continue a negative stereotype of the 100 levels seats, because it makes a neat story. I've never been told to sit down, or looked at bad when I go to a game (in the 100's or if I'm lucky, the 200's).

Sure, are there old farts who want you to sit down? Yes. But are they the majority? not in my experience.

Thanks for your response. I cant say I agree with it, but good to understand a differing point of view. I guess the only parts that I'm "taking issue with" (for lack of a better phrase, are 1) is the organic part. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding though.

I guess I can liken it to a band. A band can organically write music and play some of their "hits" each concert, but new songs are added the longer the band is around, while old ones get put on the shelf, or are played at a less regular rate. The same is true of songs in the North End. Songs that are around today, that werent around in '09 when I first started going to Timbers matches - Onward Rose City, Party in Portland, Tetris, Bury me in Green and Gold, Somos Timbers, Allez Allez A-Lo (we are the Rose City), Keep it Up Rose City, Bella Ciao, etc... and ones that were sung have been pushed out as there isnt enough time in a game to sing everything.

But like I said I could be misunderstanding, cause you mentioned
But the "at this moment, we do this song..at this moment we do the Tetris thing.." blah blah blah..that's forced.
Like mentioned are Sunshine, and Wise Men.

The other part is about singing no matter what. And absolutely that is done. The soul purpose for the singing is to encourage the boys to give it their all. When down by 3 goals, we wouldnt want them to quit trying, so why would we expect them to not give up, if we already have. To me its not Forced, but its a way of showing your love for something, and telling them "no matter what I have you back, I'm going through this with you winning or losing" Its not easy to sing when you are down 3 goals (I've been there in enemy territory in Seattle down 3-0 and it was like slowly watching my puppy die, but dammit that was my puppy that I adore and I'm going to be there with it until the end.) But I assure you nothing about me or 1,500 of my other friends who kept singing until the final whistle, was forced. The Timbers sucked that evening, but they were our boys, and we will support them. (Management is a different deal, their job is to put a good team out there. All we can ask the players to do is give their all) There was a saying that developed over last year's debacle. "PTFC, last in the league... but first in our hearts!" :)

thanks again for putting up with my rant, and your opinions brother.

Who the fuck does that? Seriously? "Oh traffic." Shut the fuck up and enjoy the ending of this game. Do you not sit in your seat and hope that's it close? I actually do, because I love being in the arena when it's that close. Give me the damn tickets if you don't want to see a close finish. (Obviously, this is not towards you.)

You're right, it certainly was a lot quieter during the first three quarters. It's like that a lot now, unless we're playing the Lakers or Heat....and now it's to the point at those games where the bandwagon LA/Miami fans are louder than us at times. I've never seen so many as I did last year at the games. Must be the almighty dollar that drives ticket holders to sell their seats. Such bullshit! Come support your team!

I love the impromptu chants. Are they the same ones each time? Pretty much, but no one's being directed by a video screen or announcer to chant along. The music/drums/horns/whatever has stopped playing every single time the teams come down the floor, which is awesome. I LOVE to hear the players on the court and the crowd murmuring. Reminds me of being a kid at the Coliseum during the WCF/Finals runs in the early 90's and actually getting to hear the game itself and not digital noise all night.

You know what's really funny? Maybe funny is the wrong word, but you just have to laugh seeing parents take their kids out near the end of the game without seeing what happens. If I was one of those kids, I'd be pissed! That is some bad Blazers parenting right there.

Some of those times I am sure the kid is the one wanting to leave, so it could go both ways.

But still, why people stay for 47 minutes and then the last minute of a 1 point game leave, never made sense to me and just infuriates me.

That happened to me ONCE, when I was about 6 or 7, going to a White Sox game, they were down 3 or 4, and family friend we went with wanted to leave, they were driving. So we all file out of Comiskey, get to our car, hear fireworks for a HR, get in the car, of course, they came back. Since that day, have refused to leave a game early, I don't care the score.

Had been slightly tempted that Brandon Roy-Dallas playoff game. Was like the first nice sunny day of the year, we had a friend watching our little girl, and we sat there watching us get our asses kicked, and the whole time was thinking damnit, I could be out at the park or somewhere with my daughter instead of watching this piss poor effort. But, of course, had to stay. Glad I had.

If the kid is the one that wants to leave, then the parents have to make the right decision and STAY!

I was working a high school baseball game behind the dish umpiring, and I was checking the score on my phone between innings. The inning that took the longest, when I got back to look on my phone, it went from down 20 to us winning. I had to contain my excitement, but that was awesome. lol.

I'll stay for a close game . . . I'll usually leave early when the game has been decided.

What I find funny is people get so upset when people leave. Who cares? Let them leave . . . makes for less traffic and being home quicker anyways. People are paying over $100 for a game, they are entitled to leave when they want.
