Assets will have to be given up to move those contracts we have. So its either we have a chance to lose assets in FA because the money to spend on them wont be there or its you lose assets to get ride of the salary so players have a shot at being resigned. Personally i'v never been a fan of trading assets to get rid of salary unless we your eyeing a big FA signing.
Not in the trade idea we were discussing...

It was Harkless and Leonard for Prince, Lin, and Len

No picks, no assets.

Let me ask you a question for next year:

Which of these groups would you rather have?

Evan Turner
Maurice Harkless
Meyers Leonard
1st round pick (currently 22nd)

or

Al-Farouq Aminu
Jake Layman
Taurean Prince
Skal Labissiere
Seth Curry
Full-MLE

I’ll take door #1 plus Jake.

Plus, Aminu, Layman and Curry can likely be re-signed so put them in category 1 as well if the Blazers choose and then still have till the deadline to move assets (expiring contracts) to lower the salary and the following year we could have the full mle and possibly more.

It is for me.
Okay, so hypothetically you're the GM and Jody Allen warns you now that she is not willing to pay tax next year and would prefer to not even get near the tax line. She does this now so you have extra time to make that happen.

You decide to keep ET, Harkless, and Leonard because you think they're expiring contracts are worth something.

Day one of free agency Jake Layman signs a 3 year, $21 million deal with the Nets meaning if you match you are over the tax line without even filling out your roster so you have to decline the offer sheet.

What do you do then?

Match.

So the non-simple answer is, I match.....then have the rest of the year to move someone else to get under the tax. The tax doesn't kick in right when you go over it. It is calculated at the end of the year. Still, now you HAVE to move some of those contracts and leverage isn't on your side....if it ever was.

Absolutely.
Just did a comparison for this season on basketball reference.

Lin shoots both 2's and 3's better, has a 4.7% eFG% advantage, TS% is 8.6% higher, he gets to the free throw line double what ET does, has a 5.5% better assist rate, is slightly better in steal% and turnover%, win shares/48 has a 0.97 to 0.54 advantage, and offensive rating is 112 to 103 which is a rather large difference.

Turner has 3.9% advantage on rebounding%, 0.3% advantage in block%, and a defensive rating of 111 compared to the 115 of Lin.

Please explain to me how that amounts to Turner being good and Lin being an abomination?

No, I specifically said that Jody warned you today that she wasn't going to allow you to do stuff like that during the season because she doesn't want to be anywhere near the tax line. She will not approve going over it next year even if the plan is to get back under because there is a risk that it wouldn't be possible.

(This is just a hypothetical)

Turner is bigger and a better initiator of the offense. I prefer him on our 2nd unit.

Player 1 - 7.7 points,,, 3.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds, FG% .472, 3pt% .167, eFG% .483, FT% .697
Player 2 - 10.9 points, 3.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds, FG% .473, 3Pt% .336, eFG% .530, FT% .826

Outside of rebounds, one of those players sucks much more than the other. (Hint - the one that sucks the most is not Lin)

Better "initiator of offense"?

That sounds completely made up...

So Turner is 6'7 instead of 6'3. Okay?

Of course it does since I made it up. Lol

I still think he’s a much better player than Jeremy Lin though. He was the 2nd pick in the draft.

He may be bigger (not sure that matters much) but the numbers prove he is not a better initiator.

I'm no fan of Turner, but I do appreciate the man defense he provides on better wing players. Not that his loss will go and make or break our season, but with Harkless constantly injured, you play any good wing player, and we have so limited options on who can defend.
I understand the potential long term benefits of shedding his deal a year early, getting the full MLE, and then maybe that player is some difference make NEXT year for us. And I know I should never get my hopes up that we'll make a deal that actually improves us now and long term, but fuck it'd be so underwhelming and depressing if our trade deadline was Turner and a pick for Jeremy Lin.

That wasn't the deal we were discussing, I too would be disappointed in just that.

In my opinion numbers don’t prove shit if your team has been garbage for the last 4 or 5 years.

You sound like someone I know...

Cant tell if you're trolling or not. Please tell me you are.

I troll all the time. I do believe some of what I’m saying though.

And Jeremy Lin is not as good as Evan Turner.

Sorry, I was thinking of the "rumored" deal from reddit, of Turner and 1st for Lin.

Oh no problem, I can see why you would think that. The original trade was from one of their fans saying they would take Harkless and Leonard for Lin, Prince, and Len. No picks attached. I said if we pulled that off to then go all-in and sell ET off with our 2019 1st for an expiring in a different deal or by making it a 3 team deal.
