Blazers are for Sale

Still find it odd that there's a belief that the NBA would fix it's Seattle fuck up, by fucking over the Portland fans in the process.

And I still find it odd that you *never* hear this about the Utah Jazz, who played in an older arena, and in a smaller market.

But what if it's Vegas and not Seattle?

Do you hear Blazers relocation talk anywhere outside of delusional Blazer fans? I've never heard it nationally.

Maybe Jazz forums are filled with a bunch of similar delusional nuts, can't say I read many Jazz forums.

If they're not going to expand the league, would a team in Vegas be more profitable to the league than Portland?
Doesn't matter. Blazers aren't a bottom 5 NBA team.

If a team moves to Vegas/Seattle it would be one doing poorly in its market (NOP, CHA, etc)

But what if it's Vegas and not Seattle?

Again, the NBA admits they fucked up the Seattle situation, and that they should never have left it. So they compound it by then allowing Portland to move?

They fought tooth and nail to keep the Kings in Sacramento, but apparently wouldn't fight to keep Portland here?

I think we'll stay here. I also think we'll see a new arena built.

I agree. It might take some time, and hopefully a new owner that foots the bill for most of us (we are spoiled after all), but I don't think the NBA can rationalize moving a team with as strong of a fan base and has their shit together just to get a team in Seattle or Vegas again.

Especially since it would tarnish the leagues repuation.

Vegas baby! Vegas!

That all sounds very sensible and the most likely outcome is that our team just stays here. Let's all hope that's how it goes down.

Is the Rose Garden outdated?

Only a couple arenas older so yeah. If was well made at the time, but still old.

I think the bigger issue is location. All the new arenas have stuff around them. Maybe the Blazers can buy that S waterfront site that some group bought recently. S waterfront seems small for a large outside stadium but NBA would be fine.

Yes, but the solution could be renovation instead of replacement.

We have one of the if not the smallest jumbotron in the association
As I noted in prior post - location sucks with nothing around that area. No hotels either. That's been a blocker to Blazers getting all-star games, etc

It's been reported that Adam Silver said at the team owners/presidents meeting recently that they are in the process of building a 30 team league. Expansion is a sure thing. The Blazers are not moving. End of story.
We have a 30 team league.

We are gonna lose our NBA team and replace it with baseball aren't we?

If we lose basketball and only have baseball and soccer in this town i'm gonna be sad.

Phil Knight has to be hearing all this. Hopefully he somehow gets involved in buying atleast a piece of the team and ensuring the team stays here forever

If PDX baseball can use "jock tax" to pay for the stadium why can't NBA use that? Probably been billions from NBA players that Oregon has collected taxes on.

Honestly, if a person or group is rich enough to buy a sports team, they should be rich enough to build an arena or stadium. It's irritating when an owner pays crazy money for a team and then threatens to move unless they get free money from the government.

well u did call it when that weak extension was signed by the city and the arena

Only in age. But it is far better than quite a few newer arenas. This comment from Silver raised my eyebrows a bit. Feel like Adam needs to actually come to Moda on his own to verify; this came out of nowhere.
I'm sure it's not out of nowhere. Silver doesn't just throw out comments like a podcaster. It's probably came up with negotiations on the sale that buyers all want a new arena or such.

Oh agreed.

But that's the reality we are in most pro sports arenas are subsidized by tax dollars.

Good news with more wealthy owners recent decade we've seen where the bulk of new arenas are paid by owners. But a large portion is still tax dollars.

100%

But rich people are greedy bastards.

The funny thing is, the team is going to cost upwards of 4 billion, maybe even 5. A new arena would cost them 1.5 ish, and while yes the city does benefit from it, if you're the owner of it (lock stock a barrel), *you* benefit too.

Concerts want to come to the new arena? They pay you.

Wrestling PLE's come to the new arena? They pay you.

NCAA's come to the new arena? They pay you.

Conventions/etc come to the new arena? They pay you.

Hell, throw in parking too.

It's not a cash cow instant recoup, but these fuckers are already benefiting at a rate higher than ever before.

unless....he already has a good idea who the new owner will be and the new owner has talked to him about the age of the Moda Center and the 'weird' lease agreement the city has with the Blazers

I guess it's possible Silver just says random shit. But he sure does seem like a calculating CEO who has his fingers on the pulse of things

I don't think what Silver said about this was random talk

philosophy...get some while it's hot!

now, back in the real world, the state of Oregon and cities in this state have been banding over backwards (and sometimes forward) for decades offering millions and billions in incentives, tax breaks, and essentially free land to corporations to locate their operations in the state, and cities. They've been doing this because other states and other cities have been doing the same things

now, obviously, the city of Portland can say enough already! They can demand that the new owner just accept the Moda Center as the home for the Blazers; and if the new owner wants a new arena then by god he can foot the bill himself. That would be sticking to their guns and bucking the trend. And very likely....Bye Bye Blazers

or they can play ball and work with a new owner to build a new arena because it may be that renovation won't be enough

I think the timing is suspicious. First we get the article from the NYT saying that there is a contingent of owners who don’t want to expand because they don’t want to add two more slices to the pie.

Now we get Silver saying that they’re going to assess expansion but pretty much kicked the can down the road.

Meanwhile he says it’s their preference that Portland keeps the Blazers but we need a new arena.

People bitched about Jody but at least the Vulcans kept investing in the team and the city.

first thing: Jody and the Vulcans didn't have much of a choice, The Trust owned the Blazers and I'd be pretty certain the trust instructed the Vulcans on maintenance of the franchise. I'd need to see a listing of what they actually paid for that was voluntary, and then need to know what the tax ramifications were

Portland is a one horse town and the horse hasn't been sold in 37 years. The world is a lot different then it was in 1988. And the NBA is a lot different then when PA bought the Blazers for 70M and Sam Bowie was the highest paid Blazer at 1M. Kiki made 960K and Clyde made 350K

new owners want new arenas. Just ask Steve Ballmer

like you, I think Las Vegas is a real threat here. Now, they don't really have an NBA arena but is there any doubt that Vegas would foot the bill to build a brand spanking new arena? How much doubt will there be about the City of Portland doing the same? I don't think Silver was just throwing out a random thought. It was calculated

It’s because the NBA wants to tap into the Vegas market imo, and Silver only sees dollar signs and knows a team in Vegas would make money.

I said from the start I’m worried about Silver and I don’t trust him one bit, I got backlash for worrying about the Blazers potentially moving and here we are now
