Blazers need 3 point scoring

Should Portland increase their 3 pt volume?

Depends on who is shooing them. If t is Dame, CJ. Nik, Jake, or Curry, sure........ if they are open.

The Blazers lost the swish3 game to the Lakers with only 6 of 35 shooting versus LAL 8 of 21 swish3s. The poor 17% swish3 shooting especially in the miserable 16 point 3rd quarter lost what should have been a win. There were instances of very good defense by Chief, Nurk, and Zach that were notable in this game.

Dame was 2 of 9, CJ was 2 of 8, Evan was 1 of 2, and Nik was 1 of 4. Nurk and Chief were 0 for 2, Seth was 0 of 4, Zach was 0 of 3, and Meyers was 0 of 1.

The problem is the percentage shooting, who is shooting, and when. In a game in which Dame and CJ are below 35%, we need to turn to the hottest hands. And no one should break the rule of attempting swish3s after 3 consequitive misses.

Based on season statistics and playoff records, I would assign Meyers to contribute swish3s at times like the 3rd quarter and aim for at least 6 swish3 attempts. If he makes 3+ he should keep shooting. If he had in this game, it is probable that the Blazers would have 6 additional points (the swish3 deficit) and the win.

In the Nov 4 MIN game, the Blazers should focus on getting 45+ swish3 points with 37+% shooting by orchestrating shots by high percentage shooters at times to start and continue scoring momentum. The MIN game should be a win!

The Blazers scored the same 21 swish3 points as MIN in the Nov 4 game but were slightly higher % with 7 of 28 versus MIN 7 of 30. The low 25% swish3 shooting is possible to improve if we concentrate shooting with Dame, CJ, Meyers, Nik, Zach, Seth, and Chief. Caleb and Wade should not be attempting swish3s.

This MIN game showed the group that should constitute the bench rotation. I would play this group.
Evan PF
Seth SG
Zach PF
Nik SF
Meyers C

This group can has excellent swish3 shooting potential and plays well together. With encouraged spacing to allow drives to the basket and kick out passing to beyond the arc, Blazer swish3 scoring of 45+ points will be optimized. We need to find and feed the hot swish3 hand, make 15-18 swish3s, and score 130 points per game in future games and stay on course for 70% wins.

I'd go with this one:

ET at SF
Seth at PG
Nik at SG
Jake at PF
Zach at C

Pretty sure this is what Neil had in mind when he said he planned to surround Turner with shooters on the 2nd unit:

Meyers, not so much:

upload_2018-11-5_5-41-0.png

Which I'm actually totally fine with. I prefer the new Meyers who plays closer to the basket, getting more dunk2s and rebounding like an actual center. Meyers currently has a ORB% of 9.8 and a TRB% of 17.9, both career highs. That's not elite rebounding, but it's above average for an NBA big man.

BNM

I also like the rebounds but want to see the 6+ shots from the arc that can help bring the swish3 scoring to 45+ points per game. Meyers at center with Zach at PF and Nik at SF gives us a swish3 scoring threat.

To get the 6 swish3 attempts, Meyers should play 18 min and should be getting passes when he moves to the arc. With the off ball movement that he showed in the MIN game, he can get the rebounds and score 15+ points. With Meyers alternating with Nurk at center, we should be scoring 30+ points in the center position.

Prominent in my view is the 70+% swish3 shooting that we know from the NBA playoff record 10 of 13 shooting (and Oct 12) that Meyers has accomplished. The low % 3 point shooting for this season is far below Meyers 42.3% for last season and would be resolved by increased swish3 attempts and min.

Blazers beat the MIL Bucks shooting 17 of 43 (39.5%) vs 16 of 42 with 6 Blazers each scoring 2 or more swish3s!

This was an excellent game for CJ, Evan, and Nurk, and a solid team effort that included 23 assists and only 12 turnovers. Best shooting was from CJ 5 of 10 (and a game leading 40 points), and Chief and Meyers were 2 of 4, Dame was 3 of 7, Evan was 2 of 5, and Jake was 2 of 6. Zach was 1 of 3, Nurk and Seth were 0 of 1, and Nik was 0 of 2.

There was energetic defense, rebounding, and screening that achieved and protected the lead and held the Bucks to 9 points less than their average. This balanced and consistent play looks good enough to be a WC contender, or better.

Emphasis on empowered scoring with swish3s is a successful strategy, even against the top teams in the NBA. Let's keep this up.

I, for one, am really impressed with the work you've put into the swish3 culture around here...commendable! You really do your swish3 research!

The Blazers shot 10 of 26 beating LAC 8 of 23 in the 116 to 105 win Nov 8, bringing us to 9 win 3 loss record. Let's keep up that 75% win rate!

Dame was 3 of 7, Chief was 2 of 2, CJ 2 of 6, Seth 1 of 1, Meyers 1 of 2, and Nik 1 of 5. Nurk, Evan, and Zach were each 0 of 1. Although 30 points was enough to help with the win, this is well below the 24 points each half that should be the aim for beating higher scoring teams. For the Celtics game, I hope to see 36+ swish3 attempts and scoring 42+ to win the swish3 battle.

This was a good defensive performance, with energy level kept high, only 7 turnovers, active rebounding, effective screening, good switch offs, and shot blocking.

The refs in this game were decidedly unfavorable, especially considering this is home court, with an unjustified technical called on Dame, lack of any call of the several fouls of Dame, and highly questionable fouls called on Nurk and Zach. Let's hope to at least not have a ref disadvantage on home court in the Celtics or any future games.

15 free throws in the 1st quarter. 28 in the game (to their 20). We built our early lead via a parade of swish1's. Despite Dame's displeasure with the lack of calls later, it seems a stretch to suggest we had a disadvantage.

Dame's technical foul was an error, because he only clapped his hands and said "that's a foul."

Dame was hit hard and his shot interfered with or even knocked to the floor without a single foul called.

This was in my view adversely unfair reffing that should not occur on home court. The Blazers should not have the zebras against them at home!

If only Draymond got T'd for similar stuff.

Yes, Meyers needs to be shooting 6 swish3s per game, and continuing with more attempts if he makes 3+ of them. I would play Meyers, Zach, and Nik together for a multi-swish3 scoring threat that can beat the Rockets!
Why only 6? If he takes 50 swish 3s and makes 50% of them, that's 75 points. And when you add those points to our final score,we will probably score more than the other team who made less swish3s. Thus we will be victorious.

To be fair, Dame had been complaining all game, not saying he deserved the tech cause what he was doing wasnt much compared to what nba guys do on a regular basis, but it was probably attrition that got him more than what he did that instant.

I want to meet you.

For science.

The Blazers are for real, beating the Celtics 100 to 94 with 42 points scored by swish3s (14 of 36) to match the Celtics 14 of 42. The Celtics shows by power of swish3 scoring in the 3rd quarter with good shooting but the Blazers kept it going with vital 3 point scoring for the win.

Best swish3 shooting was from Seth (3 of 4), Chief (3 of 7), Jake (2 of 2), and Meyers (2 of 3). Dame was 2 of 7, CJ was 1 of 6, Nik was 1 of 3, Zach was 0 of 1, and Evan was 0 of 3. Those 4th quarter swish3s by Chief were a major factor in the win.

The Blazer bench provided solid performance and helped get the big 2nd quarter lead. This was a great game for Nurk with both scoring and defense. He played with high energy that translates into wins.

Animus 2 swish3s at the end of the game were definitely clutch. If the blazers had missed all of their swish3s they'd have lost by 36.

The Blazers lost the swish3 game scoring 42 (14 of 33) versus the Lakers 45 (15 of 32) in the 117-126 loss on Nov 14. After the Blazers took the lead in most of the first half with good shooting, active defense, and some excellent assists, the Lakers showed the power of swish3 scoring in the 2nd half and the Blazers ran down noticeably on shooting, ball movement, defense, and turnovers due to bad passes. The night turned into a blast for LeBron who scored 44 points including 68%+ of field goals, 13 of 15 FT, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. Even though LeBron played well, he was aided in my view by weaving a scheme of fouls called after he used some flopping and complaining near the end of the first half to bias foul calls in his favor. At times it seemed that the refs stopped play to review possible flagrant fouls of LeBron often, and called fouls on Zach, Nurk, and Dame that were minor compared to hits, pushes, holds, and hits of the shooting hand. I thought that LeBron's featured shot block was a clear foul, and if it were called might have changed momentum.

The major missing factor in this game seemed to be failing to make strategic substitutions to allow the bench to contribute scoring and keep up the defensive intensity. In the last min of the 1st half and in the 2nd half, especially the 4th quarter, Blazer defense lost intensity and scoring accuracy ran down. This was the time for substitutions to keep intensity up. This game was like some last year when Blazers had the lead and were in control of the game, but let it run down by failing to make substitutions that keep up consistent, active defense and add scoring. On a night when LeBron scores 15 points in 6 shots, a win is hard to get, but there could have been 9 more swish3s scored with as few as 6 additional shots from the best shooting talent.

In this game, Chief was 4 of 7, CJ was 3 of 8, Dame was 3 of 9, Jake was 2 of 2 (again!), Meyers was 1 of 2, Zach was 1 of 4, and Evan was 0 of 1. In the rest of the road trip, I would like to see the Blazers return to the pattern of substitutions that will keep swish3 scoring and consistent determined defense flowing throughout the game. This can still be a successful road trip.

The Blazers decisively lost the swish3 contest tonight scoring only 24 (8 of 29) while the MIN TWolves scored 36 (12 of 28). This Nov 16 game was a game of turnovers and flawed Blazer coaching. In a game in which Nurk and Meyers were scoring well and should have been played together and fed more shots, the Blazers reverted to many shots by Dame and CJ. I would like to see Nurk and Meyers on the floor together with plays to have them shooting when Blazer scoring is falling behind. It made no sense to have Evan shooting swish3s, and Jake playing when Meyers could have been in, and Simmons played remarkably well when he was in.

Swish3 shooting was led by Meyers (2 of 2), Gary Trent (2 of 2), Zach (1 of 2), with Dame 1 of 7, CJ 1 of 4, Chief 1 of 5, Evan, Wade, and Nik each 0 of 1, and Jake and Simmons 0 of 2. This was a night in which recognizing and feeding the hot hand could have made a big difference. For the rest of the road trip, let's hope for better use of scoring talent that is hot. To win these games, the Blazers should be aiming to score 45 points by swish3s, which would have been enough to win again tonight.

This was a night where not turning the ball over everytime down the court wouldve been fantastic. Between TO’s and their defense they sucked. Sure they didnt shoot well, but shooting well usually comes with crisp offense.

6 straight quarters of just pure trash on both ends of the court.

No question Meyers played well again against the Twolves. He did get some time and Nurk played well though also. Stotts did play Meyers and Collins together for a while. But they couldn't close the gap.

But with Meyers shooting 100% of swish3s, the Blazers did not keep feeding him. They left him alone on the arc and squandered shooting opportunities, like the close hook shot that Zach missed. Dame should have stopped after missing 3 consecutive swish3 attempts. Gary was also hot. What needs to change is getting to 8 swish3s each half by continuing the shooting from the hot hands.

Oh, you mean the other team started guarding him, thus taking away his swish3 opportunities? Weird.

No. I mean that I saw Meyers open at the arc and plays in which he could be open at the arc if they looked for him. Recognizing the NBA record swish3 percentage shooter being hot and using him as an offensive weapon in games like the MIN games should result in a win every time. When Dame and CJ and Chief and Jake are cold, the Blazers need to rely on Meyers, and with his active off ball movement, he can be open for at least 6 swish3s per game. And if he makes 3 or more, keep shooting. This is the Blazer who shot 76.9% in the playoffs! He will be open and know when to take those shots, but we need to be looking to him to score.

In this MIN Nov 16 game, Blazer starters were 3 of 18 and the bench scored 5 of 11 swish3s. When the starters are missing, and the bench is scoring, Blazer coaches need to respond.

What "plays" can get Meyers open? He can't shoot unless he's at a standstill, and his shot is so slow that defenders can easily go under screens and still be there to stop Meyers from shooting. Stick a guy on Meyers, and hes not getting open looks.

Also, what NBA record did he break?! Lmao.

Hi BJ. Meyers does get open and make shots. And he spaces the floor, screens to get teammates open shots, and has good off ball movement that has him open at the arc. He has made many shots that show he is not easily defended. If you watch closely, he needs only about 3 feet of separation at the time of his shot, which is admittedly deliberate but also quite accurate.

Meyers NBA record is for percentage swish3 shooting (76.9%) in the playoffs, which in the "Is Meyers Leonard for real?" and other threads discussed and acknowledged.

I bet you I can find someone who's shot 1 for 1, since you're not accounting for sample size.. and if Meyers is so good, why do you use a 5 game sample size from years ago to make him sound better?
