Blazers Offer Roy Hibbert Max Contract (1 Viewer)

All bird free agents are free to resign with their team for up to 5 years. They can only be signed by a new team or in a sign and trade for 4 years. This includes restricted free agents such as George Hill and Roy Hibbert.

There is a designated player rookie extension which can be for a 5th year and up to 30% of the cap. Other rookie extensions can only be 4 additional years for up to 25% of the cap. A team can only give one player the designated extension and have one more acquired via trade on their roster.

A 5 year contract that a teams own free agent signs does not make them a designated player.

These are both extended rookie deals, which I believe would mean only one could be the designated player,a nd get a 5th year.

No these are not rookie extensions. Rookie extensions are signed before the last season of a rookie contract. Neither Hill nor Hibbert can become a designated player. Plus neither fulfilled the all-star starter, all-nba, or MVP criteria anyways.

oops, sorry, you're right, my bad.

From a Pacers beat writer...

Kurt Helin: George Hill agrees to five-year deal to stay with Pacers http://dlvr.it/1p0lzb #PBT #NBA about 6 minutes ago

"The biggest question for the Pacers now is Roy Hibbert — he is expected to sign a max offer sheet from the Portland Trail Blazers on July 11 (the first day you can sign a free agent). The Pacers will then have three days to match the offer or let him go. I really don’t see how they do not match. Hibbert is central to making the Pacers a contender."

Dwight Jaynes pissing in our cornflakes saying pacers will match on his latest blog.

According to Jaynes, there will be no offer to match because of Batum's offer sheet.

Oh wait, he was wrong on that one, too.

It was all in my original post you responded to.

Indy can offer a 5th year and bigger annual increases. If Hibbert is wanting a max deal, if I'm Indy and want to keep Hibbert, I want that max deal to be offered by a team that can only offer 4 years and smaller annual increases. If/when Indy matches, they will be paying quite a bit less for Hibbert than if they offered the max they can offer. It's simply more palatable.

But Indy could simply offer less to begin with. They don't need another team involved to do that. They don't have to offer him a max contract just because he wants one.

John Canzano: Blazers will have $3 million in cap space to use on a free agent while waiting for Hibbert and Batum to settle. I expect Pacers match. 4 minutes ago

Ben Golliver: Ford: 51% Chance That Pacers Match Blazers Offer To Roy Hibbert http://sbn.to/M0Vb08 2 minutes ago

Chad Ford of ESPN.com writes in a chat that the Indiana Pacers are not sure whether or not to match a 4-year, $58 million offer sheet reportedly made by the Portland Trail Blazers to restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert.

51%. They are really on the fence. If they can find a replacement that they are comfortable with for cheaper, they may let him go. Chris Kaman is coming in today into Indy. Personally I feel that's a pretty big downgrade, but Larry Bird has been a huge fan of Kaman's.

Where have you been?

The Blazers already are the "other team", if reports are true that we have come to verbal terms with Hibbert.

What you are talking about has already happened.

Spencer (Indiana)

What are the odds of Indiana matching Portland's offer on Roy Hibbert?

Hoping this meeting between Indy and Kaman goes well, but Ford's right - that's a pretty big downgrade.

As for the mention of Larry Bird.... well, Chad.... he's no longer running things, so I'm not sure how that's relevant.

Does Bird have any sort of attachment to the organization (i.e. ownership, other employment, or anything else?)

Yeah, ya think? I've been posting throughout this entire thread. I think you really should spend some time re-reading my post. My point was that Indy had no motive to offer Hibbert a max. That would COST THEM MORE MONEY. They were better off waiting for Portland to come along and offer the max we can offer, since it's a lot less than Indy's max.

Nice job attempting to call me out, though. You jumped the gun there. Are you Jaynes? Canzano?

Yeah, but I guess you don't understand today's pro athlete. Most have pretty big egos, even the ones who come across humble.

It's easier for Hibbert to get his max deal via a team like Portland, where Indy can simply match, than for Indy themselves to offer Hibbert the max, which would mean more money and more years. If Hibbert is pushing for a max contract, he's now got his max contract, but it's less expensive (and thus more desirable) for Indy.

Ken Berger: Also, Houston's offer sheet with Omer Asik has spiked interest in unrestricted centers Marcus Camby and Chris Kaman, sources say. 2 minutes ago

Shit. More competition for centers, driving up prices = Indy (IMO) more likely to match price tag of Hibbert. That's the market for centers dictating those high prices.

I will look it up, but when was the last time a true center led his team to a finals?

Dwight was the last to lead a team, Shaq was the last to lead a team and win. Fairly recently, actually.

Is Duncan a Center? He led Spurs to championship in 2007 (one year after Shaq/Miami won).

Is anybody thinking Hibbert will 'lead' the team? It's LMA's team, with or without Hibbert.

No, but if you pay a guy a max contract, you should expect more than a role player
