The skinny
Thanks to the lucky bounce of a ping pong ball, the Trail Blazers secured the top overall pick in the draft and the rights to franchise center Greg Oden despite having only the sixth worst record in the NBA last season. The dream pick turned into a nightmare when Oden was forced to go under the knife for a knee injury that ended his rookie year before it started. Perhaps a bigger coup for the Blazers is the reuniting of the team and its arena, the Rose Garden, under the ownership of Paul Allen. Allen had relinquished his stake in the arena during bankruptcy proceedings during 2004. He was freed of an onerous debt load, but also had to give up almost all arena revenues including luxury suites, club seating and ad signage. In April Allen's investment company, Vulcan, bought the Rose Garden.
