I actually prefer the short term signing of Kaman because Meyers may develop and Marc Gasol or Brooke Lopez may be available next summer and I really want the Lopez twins splitting the post duties here.

Last three times we have had cap space it yielded players near MLE levels. With Gasol having strong Memphis ties, I would be shocked if he left for any other team.

That's my attitude now. Only reason I wanted the red neck was because Olshey made him a priority. Now I'm back to couldn't care less about the him.

Hope his demeanor in locker room causes tension in the clipper locker room. Oh and fuck the clippers.

Other than that, wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th! :)
 
I'm not entirely sure how Spencer Hawes became the "it" free agent this year (MAYBE some people put LeBron James ahead of him). Slight exaggeration, but the deep lust around the NBA and among fans for Hawes seems a tad overdone. Is it purely because he shot 41.6% from three-point range last year? If that was what he always did, I could understand it, since stretch big men are hugely valued these days. But that looks like a massive outlier compared to the rest of his career. He's also a mediocre rebounder for a center and nothing special defensively.

I'd prefer Kaman for the coming season. Over the next 4 years, I'd prefer Hawes due to age, but I'd rather neither one on a four-year deal.

How is it incomplete info? It's complete, we signed Kaman for the MLE. What's the problem?
 
In his 11 seasons, Kaman has played >66 games in only Seasons #1, 3, 4, and 7. Last year, 39 games, was exactly average for 3 of his last 4 seasons (32+47+39, divided by 3 years, = 39). It was not an off-season for him as portrayed by the L.A. media; it was typical.

The real challenge will be who can spin this as a poor job by Olshey AND that big name free agents will never come to Portland?

The key here is you have to do BOTH spin jobs, not just the one.

No. It was because of D'antoni. Although, we shall see how this goes.
 
This flatters Lopez. Hawes must think DeAndre Jordan is more of a pushover, to take Jordan's job.

After a productive season between the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers – in which he averaged 13.2 points and eight rebounds – Hawes had become a desired commodity on the market. For the Cavaliers, Hawes shot nearly 45 percent from 3-point range.
 
I think Neil has some other moves up his sleeve. Possibly trades.

Channing frye sign and trade involving Claver and something and signing a cheap pg. I still don't think mo comes back.

Also after seeing chris bosh and la destroy the league stretching the floor all the stretch bigs are in ridiculously high demand so if we pull off frye we should consider it a massive win. Kaman was a pretty big win for the same reason, however that might speak to the loss of frye.
 
I don't get why people are so upset. Hawes didn't choose us so we went with next next option. During the playoffs there was a huge drop off when Rolo went to the bench. We needed a true back up center. While Freeland had games where he played well he's not a center. We got killed on the boards when he played center. Kaman may not be a good defender but he's better at guarding centers than Freeland, better rebounder and will give you more offense. We improved our bench and that's what we needed to do.

I think like Rolo people will be surprised how much be helps us.
 
I agree. Howard would shove Freeland aside with ease. He won't be able to do that as easily against Kaman if Lopez gets in could trouble.

I think Hawes will get more minutes than Kaman, so he probably will put up better numbers. Hawes will also finish games since Jordan is such a poor free throw shooter.

But as many have mentioned it was essential that we got another center for depth purposes. And as many have also mentioned Kaman is a quality center when healthy. 4 months ago I watched him put up 31 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists against Phoenix. The guy can still play.
 
Everyone talked about Robin not being a good defender. Kaman is very similar as a defender. Neither are shot blocking dynamos because most dynamic shot blockers get a lot of blocks from the weakside helping. Kaman and Robin block their matchups shots straight up. Also both are pretty good man on man in the post. Kaman is a better offensive player than Robin while Robin is slightly better on D. Kaman also is a very good passer. I think we will all be happy with his play once he suits up.

OK as I try to accept Kaman (a guy the last small market team he played for sent home because of his attitude) maybe the logic goes like this:

Blazers need a backup center because Leonard not ready and Freeland is limited. Not getting Hawes. Kaman available and worth about 3 million or so a yr. Can wait to see if he accepts BAE but might get signed by another team for more. If you offer 3.5 for 2 yrs that would be very competitive but leaves less than 2 on the MLE and about the same as the BAE. Blazers only have two spots open so if you are going to burn the MLE, why not give him the entire thing in exchange for a buyout of 1 million. Kaman gets his 6 million, which I can't imagine he would get more from any other team (or they wouldn't have agreed to this) and Blazers get their flexibility . . . . . .so they can dump him after a yr when they find out he is an unmotivated and lazy center (sorry couldn't resist typing the last part :) )

But maybe that's the logic behind throwing this guy 5.8 million???



tl/dr: if going to burn MLE, why not give it all to him in exchange for flexibility . . .
