Trade Blazers trade Hezonja for Kanter!

With just a bit more practice, I’m sure Kanter can be shooting these just as well as Dame.

Or maybe not....

what's funny about that is Kanter probably has 70 pounds on Dame and yet, Kanter has to shift his shot motion to lots of leg leverage just to get the ball near the basket. Meanwhile Dame's shot mechanics seem pretty normal and he's hitting the mark

You misread my post, I was saying the issue of him being exhausted during Ramadan would only be a problem when he was a 40 mpg starter. Ramadan fasting isn't likely to be much of a problem as a backup.

Wasn't ever a problem for Hakeem...

Why don't we just stop bringing up people's faith? Did you ever talk about Ramadan when it came to Aminu?

Didn't Aminu historically step his game up in the playoffs?

Did folks talk about Ramadan then?

Do we know that he strictly obeyed the no water part of observing Ramadan like Kanter does? As I said above, to me, that's the only cause for concern as far as an athlete's performance goes.

Just stop...

Talking about people's faith being a concern for their level of play.

I'm talking about their hydration being a concern, not their faith. As I understand it, Ramadan fasting doesn't allow for drinking water until after sunset. That's not a problem for night games, but it can be for the daytime games that often occur on weekends. NBA athletes sweat pretty profusely during a game. That's ALL I'm saying.

Did you ever say this about Aminu?
Hakeem won two championships while fasting. Kanter was BEASTIN' Jokic and the only thing that was holding him back was his shoulder.

I don't recall Aminu ever making his faith practices public. It only came to my attention when Kanter went public with his fasting regimen when he first joined the Blazers. My question about the way guys fast is legitimate. I don't know if all Muslims practice their fasting the same way.

Then try learning? Aminu most certainly did say he was Muslim and most certainly did practice Ramadan.

Try learning? Try reading. I am well aware that Aminu and Nurk are Muslim. My QUESTION is whether all Muslims are as stringent about not drinking water before sunset. If you don't know the answer to that QUESTION, fine. I've done some searches since I asked it and I can't find anything on it.

Christians play games on Sunday when they're not supposed to work on the Sabbath... We're not questioning whether or not they'll miss games because of their faith...

So, apparently you don't know the answer to my question.

Can't stand this topic and it's always the same guy bringing it up. It can legitimately be argued that the fast increases focus and they play better.

Excuse me? I've never brought this topic up before this thread. My question is simply that. Something I don't know the answer to. It would seem to me that maintaining hydration would be pretty important to an athlete's performance and health. I have no issue with not eating and no issue with his faith.

um: This was last year in a despicable thread where you brought it up first when it had not been mentioned prior.

Yup.

This Ramadan fasting has soured me on Kanter. He just can’t put out the work when he’s doing that and it happens every year during the playoffs.

Okay, I'd forgotten that one line. I didn't explain myself then, but it's the same issue. I don't know how an athlete can play without water. If you want to make me out to be someone who is a Muslim-hater, I can't stop you. It's not true, but this is the internet where people get to make up their own truth.

Nah, no need. It's just funny you are the only one who seems to care about this topic.

It's a stupid question. The fact that you don't know that you ARE saying his faith has soured you on him is... Typical...

If that’s the case, wouldn’t training staffs have all the players fast then? If you’re talking about science, which you appear to be, and how fasting improves performance, then why not have all players do it if it’s such a benefit?

Just want to say I’ve read this thread and the one bringing up religion is you. It’s is possible to debate the merits of demerits of fasting and playing NBA basketball without accusing someone of being a bigot, which you are doing for no reason at all. It’s not a discussion when you falsely put a person in a corner by labeling them for something they haven’t done.

It is not a stupid question. NBA athletes sweat a lot and simple science says that the body needs water to work that hard. Cramping is a common result of dehydration. I asked a question as to whether all Muslims maintain a strict adherence to not drinking before sunset. From what I've read online today, it seems that for devout Muslims even a sip of water is enough to invalidate a fast. That doesn't mean all guys adhere to that. Perhaps the NBA has helped find ways for Muslims to deal with this issue. That would be interesting information too.

Receipts!

I mean, what is this below? 9 pages into this thread when not a single other person had brought it up. Come on, man.

I love what Kanter brings to the team, but we're going to have the Ramadan issue during the playoff run again. Ramadan is April 12th to May 11th. He seems to manage to work through the fasting, but it can't be easy.

Your fascination with this is fascinating. Likewise, the fact that it troubles you is troubling.

And what is wrong with that statement? I have a question about how the heck they can not drink water and play at an NBA level. The fact that Kanter, and other Muslims, appear to be able to pull this off is impressive. I don't get how they can do it.

Not many people are as disciplined. I've tried religious fasts before, and it takes some serious mental fortitude to get past the initial temptations to break it before you reach a sustainable level of energy. I dunno. I just hate it being brought up every time we discuss Kanter. There are so many other Muslims in the NBA that have succeeded. The only reason we ever saw a drop off last year was because of his shoulder. To attribute that to his fast, or then repeatedly claiming it's an issue just reeks of ignorance.

It’s a fact the Kanter fasts during Ramadan and it’s a fact that this thread is about Kanter.

Other than you claiming it can help athletes play better, which I find no proof of in terms of scientific research, it seems to be somewhat difficult. Even Enes said he talked to Hakeem for ideas on how to keep playing well while fasting.

Calling out that poster for having some anti-Muslim bias is ridiculous. Wondering about the effect of a fast on game performance is not criticizing that player for their faith.
