While I think Outlaw's defnitely a nice guy and fun story, and Sergio's no doubt helped Rudy's transition is it time that these limited players be cut loose in hopes that our main stars bond together? Outlaw's defensive lapses are simply intolerable and while his skill of creating his shot is great at the end of the shot clock bail-outs for the most part it seems that it hurts us as teammates over-rely on feeding him. Sergio has his obvious limitations which I think with development could be improved upon greatly but Nate clearly cannot live with him. Is it time to cut our losses at the expense of some "camaraderie" in order to make our team tougher and get our future main cogs to bond better with each other?
I like that the team is all close and makes good stories for Quick, but it's time to treat them like men and break up the cliques. With these moves Rudy/Roy/LMA/Oden will need to hang out with each other, as Sergio/Outlaw/ and Bayless will be gone, and some vet leadership will be injected.
Trade #1
Bayless/Blake for Steve Nash
You laugh but on their boards a lot of them are saying it'd be a decent return for him. He's nearing the end of his career and could use the reduced minutes we could offer, and he needs some decent defensive bigs behind him to mask his defensive woes (which aren't much worse than Blake's). Our offense becomes two tiered with Nash, he plays the role of pushing the tempo the first half of the shot clock and trying to find our bigs and cutters easy buckets, then Brandon controls the second half as Nash plays a Blake spread the floor role. We're the closest he can come to playing a big role on a championship competing team probably unless he goes back to Dallas w/Dirk, but I still think we're better personnel wise. Phoenix saves a bunch of money and gets a nice local prospect in Bayless who can still put fans in the seats. I know salaries don't match but we're able to do the move based upon cap space (and absorb the 7 million dollar difference).
Trade #2
Outlaw/Sergio/#24 to NY
for #8 pick (Stephen Curry)
Not sure if they have the cap space to make this work, but it could work out pretty well. (maybe a sign n trade or we get filler or something, Cat Mobley is expiring, but we don't want to swallow 9 million, hmm) perhaps they give us cuttino and three million, making it even financially.
Outlaw and Sergio are perfect fits for Dantoni ball, and would flourish in NY playing for a coach who isn't keen on developing younger players anyways. We get a player who can spread the floor fantastically, plays with a ton of poise, and will be good for 15mpg his first year in the league. Long term Curry could look very good as a compliment to Koponen or Roy in an off-ball SG role next to a larger 'PG' yet defending other PG's. His shooting is lights out, and he is a very smart player, and great passer, would be fantastic for our bigs.
Sign Antonio Mcdyess or Kurt Thomas along with Desmond Mason.
Bring over Joel Freeland and Peterri Koponen
Nash/Curry/Koponen
Roy/Fernandez
Webster/Batum/Mason
Aldridge/Mcdyess/Freeland
Oden/Pryzbilla
While there are always injury curveballs on paper that's a perfect mix of vets, rising contributors, and projects and I think that roster could legitimately compete for a championship next year. With Outlaw gone defensive lapses will be much fewer and far between, with the injection of Nash, Webster, and Curry the floor will spread wide open for Oden and Aldridge (both of whom should be improved next year w/Oden's moves and conditioning and Aldridge's strength), and our roster should be much better equipped to push the tempo. Although we appear weak at PG realistically it'd be alright with how much Roy and Rudy play on the ball it's more like we're shallow at SG (not as big of a concern for people), and that team just looks a lot tougher than this years.
