But if you want to play the Pollyanna role, have at it. I'd actually prefer your hugs and kisses scenario than my arms length scenario (which, BTW is light years from advocating for nuclear war). But keep on putting words in the mouths of others......

I know and have know several Russians and Russian-Americans and every one of them was/are genuinely nice and very welcoming people.

They have the same wants and needs we all do. They are much less gullible than the average American, and know when their government lies to them.

They harbor no irrational fear of Americans, unlike the irrational fear Americans are programmed to have of them.

I have known a few former Russian "citizens", even one that was an officer in their military. He was in command of a Russian missile site.

Not sure about the gullible part, but i am convinced common sense was not a requirement to be an officer in their military. His lack of common sense scared me.

I want my 4 minutes back. Any comedian with a measure of talent can bring tears to my eyes regardless of the subject or target of their humor. Not even a chuckle here.

About the X-Russian military office I know.
He is a genius at using computer gadgets. But can not apply that info to everyday use.

Example. He can make a GPS screen do just about anything and more you could imagine. However, he would get lost in a phone booth and not find the door, even when the GPS told which way to go. And he was in charge of missiles.

Agree, but he did not drink.. Never saw him take a sip of vodka, and we made several trips together, one that lasted a week. We did have a couple of beers, once.

He did tell me stories about vodka. When his missile unit would go on maneuvers, he would take cases of vodka with him. It was common for other units to steal equipment from each other. The best way to get the equipment back that wss stolen from his unit was to buy it back with vodka.

have any Ukranian friends?

Yes. It is actually the only country from that continent that I have friends from, unless you count Singapore.

In the early 90's while attending government purchasing training in Seattle for a week, a Russian fishing vessel was in port and welcoming visitors. A merchant marine from Ukraine offered to give me a complete tour of the vessel which was very educational including some surprises such as lots of Russian art on the walls and a huge library of music on tape. We hit it off pretty well and went out bar-hopping to enjoy some Jazz music, got very hammered, and shared stories of our lives. It is a favorite memory of mine.

I also worked alongside several Russian-Americans for 2 years and became good workplace friends with one who was also from Ukraaine, named Vladimir. Genuinely one of the nicest family-oriented people I've ever known to this day. I don't know much about Russia's politics or the former Soviet States and their histories, but Ukraine seems to be a place where remarkably nice people are born and it makes me think it's a place I'd like to visit someday.

MARIS61, I agree with you on what you just said. The Russians are very family oriented (which surprised me). And love the arts.

One time I was upset about something happening in the USA. We discussed how the USA is stating to lean more towards being a communist country, especially in the PNW. So I asked him.

What was it like living in a communist country?

He thought long and hard, then said. It is like being raped everyday. Which puts the problems we have the USA in prospective for me.

It's too bad good people from all countries aren't the standard bearers of their culture....politicians rarely represent them...it's also difficult to judge a culture by the expats who left sometimes....most for good reason...

I have absolutely no fear of the average Russian citizen and never have. I do fear the Russian government....just as I fear (now more than ever) the American government (because now more than ever their lies become more and more obvious). If you think Putin is a good guy with benign intentions, well.....you also appeared to have voted for Trump. Not sure who the more gullible American is here......
