Connecticut School Shooting

What's up with Canada? They have just as many guns as we do, but almost no problems like this? What is different?

But cops are fat and lazy and corrupt government union workers. Jesus I fucking hate this line of thinking.

There are twice as many private police officers in this country, go look for one. A trained pro who doesn't get treated with kid gloves if he fucks up, unlike public workers.

Maybe we could start wearing yellow stars. Would that help you find us?

e:to clarify, i have had bouts of depression, and many in my family (mostly extended) as well. Where do you draw the line?

Bout of depression is way fucking different from being a sociopath or a schizophrenic. Have you ever had thoughts of going into a building and killing everyone?

My point is, in many cases these people have a history of mental illness and we just ignore it until they snap.

Screams and the sounds of people being shot were coming over the school's intercom system at one point. Even the survivors are going to be deeply damaged by this. So very sad.

Switzerland isn't pure anarchy either, I would guess that certain areas of the US have less violence.

Washington D.C.'s gun control hasn't worked out too well.

Like that guy at clackmas town center whose friends were all shocked?

With such an emotionally charged subject, the most rational time to debate it is.usually not right after something this.horrific occurs.

Will say I am pretty happy with my kids having multiple passcodes needed to.get into.school.

Statistical anomolies, one and all. Fuck you, huevon.

No I've never thought about hurting anyone like that, that's sounds crazy to me.

I get your point though.

This is Connecticut though, and the one from the other day was here in Oregon, not exactly Afghanistan.

In this situation, who do you arm?

You can't prevent a situation like this. There was a mass stabbing in China today that killed 22 small children. These are sick people and if they want to hurt someone, they're going to do it. The only way you can prevent it is by identifying the people before they hurt someone.

Clearly the problem is a combined one. Stupidity, mental illness, and guns. A multi-pronged approach is what's needed. This community had no previous problems of violence. (this was mental illness) DC has tons of problems with violence(this was stupidity) mexico has tons of problems (arizona is right across the border and ease of purchase illegally/legally)

ABC's reporting that the shooter (the "first" shooter?) had four guns.

Small correction: there were 22 WOUNDED children at the China stabbing. As far as I know, none of them have died.

He said there were no deaths among the nine students admitted, although two badly injured children had been transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

Like that guy at clackmas town center whose friends were all shocked?

"Long before Tuesday afternoon, when he killed two people, wounded a girl and then shot himself dead at Clackamas Town Center mall, Jacob Roberts had endured the death of his mother, a family betrayal, a fragile home life marked by mental illness and marijuana and a series of failed career plans that left his future unsettled. "

The warning signs are there.

Good point. I rescind my statement. Forgive me for going on ignorance.

They are there, but hindsight is 20/20. If those criteria (parent's death, betrayal in family, fragile home life, failed careers) were used to proactively filter everyone in the USA, I wonder how many we would mark as potential murderers?

That said, I do agree with you -- our mental health infrastructure is clearly an important part of this puzzle.

The thing is, mental illness can be diagnosed at a fairly young age. I'm not saying we should heard them all up and put them in jail, but I do think it would be good to start treating them and keeping a close eye on them. I think it's especially hard for parents to see it because they don't want to believe that there's something wrong with their kids. It's totally understandable, but in this day and age we have to figure something out. Yes, guns are part of the problem because they are the weapon of choice, but the heart of the problem is the people who are willing to go into a school full of small children and start shooting. We need to get to the point where we can figure the WHY before it actually happens, because after the fact it's all just speculation.

I agree this is true, but it could lead to some bad situations. I hope such a system would only have incentives and no penalties.

Vintery, mintery, cutery, corn,
Apple seed and apple thorn,
Wire, briar, limber lock
Three geese in a flock
One flew East
One flew West
And one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

One of these days, the govt. will decide that being a commie is a mental disorder and they'll round people up.

No thanks.

Guys you're not going to stop this by addressing mental illness, sounds like an excuse to lock up people for life.

Let's just admit this guy is a scumbag and deal with him now. I don't think there are minority-report-style warning signs in many of these cases.

CBS News is confirming that a second body has been found in the New Jersey home of the shooter.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle.
