The University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) lowered its projection of total deaths from 68,841 (with an estimate range of 30,188 to 175,965) to just over 60,308 (with an estimate range of 34,063 to 140,381) in an update published Friday.

It’s an honest concern. I’m kinda on the fence as well. I’m just glad they aren’t projecting the 120-240k deaths a couple weeks ago. That would be a disaster.

So it seems like this is kind of a decision point for the Reagan-era 'drown it in a bathtub' theory of government.

It's pretty clear the federal response is and is going to continue to be similar to gawking at a traffic accident: gee, that looks bad, but hey, not my problem.

If the states deal with the problem and the voters accept that the federal government has no useful role even in an emergency of this sort, that would seem to justify by extension the elimination of most federal government services. If the states/citizens don't need federal help in a pandemic, do they really need help with anything else?

Alternatively, maybe the refusal of the federal government to help in this crisis will catalyze a desire for a more competent and willing government, thus marking the end of the 'let's destroy the federal government from within' movement of the last 40 years.

I'd like it to be the latter, but if I had to bet money, I'd bet on the former.

There's a third possibility--that the public just blames the current administration for bungling the job and things don't change appreciably in the future. That would be the "George W. Bush mismanages Hurricane Katrina" model.

Granted, this is a lot more widespread so it's not an exact parallel.

And before certain people say, "tRUmP's APprovAL RatINgS aRE aCtuAlly gOiNg UP!"--A. Bush's approval ratings didn't immediately suffer, it took time and B. Trump's approval ratings are dropping again.

Trump laid out plans to reopen America with graphs and poster boards, with phases etc and said, again, the governors make the final decision. I watched and thought for the first time, this actually seems reasonable.
The following day he tweeted democratic run states to liberate their people and for one of them to also protect their second amendment.
He told the states to decide what to do and within 24 hours told them to open up. He is so mentally unstable it’s not up for debate.

Agreed. Testing was part of the guidelines for stage 1, but I believe it’s based on the ability to test pockets of hot zones. And, the mitigation guidelines can go forward or back. If there is a spike, they would be required to go back a level.

Phase one's guidelines was also to have 14 days of declining numbers. Does Florida meet that guideline?
