A few years ago I read The Great Mortality, about the 1918 influenza. There was an anti mask league that held public protests against wearing masks, and I wondered how people could be so dumb.

Live and learn.

Reminded of those who argue wearing seat belts might actually make accidents worse. They don't.

If you leave your home, wear a mask. It won't destroy your freedom or make your penis fall off, or cause you to vote Democratic. Just prevents spread of disease.

Trump is not going to win a Novel Prize for medicine.

Mayors can set local rules.

But, the rules the governor makes supercede the rules the mayor makes. The mayor can say everyone needs to wear masks, we are shutting this and that down. The Governor can then say as many of the Republican governors in the highly effected states did nope, everything is open, no masks, etc. The mayor is powerless.

Yeah, Bars and Clubs opening are fucking stupid.

So were the protests.

Yes, the protests were dumb vis a vis the virus, but there's a big difference between an oppressed people being moved to anger and people wanting to get their nightlife on. These types of protests and riots were inevitable considering the lack of interest this country shows in protecting the rights of black people, it was just bad luck that it happened during a pandemic.

No, Trump is not going to win any Nobel prizes including the prize for peace for all his important work with Kim Jong-un.

Exactly. There is a big difference between fighting to change a hundreds year old oppression and the arrogant entitlement of not wanting to self quarantine at your comfy home because you are bored or to wear masks/take precautions/social distance because it is inconvenient.

Nope.

Viruses and pandemics don't care about your intentions.

Sure, masks should help.

So if masks help, we can be more lax with social distancing, apparently. People are wildin' out with masks, and they seemed approved by the local government.

...I should have anticipated this kind of response...not sure what I was thinking.

Nope.

Viruses and pandemics don't care about your intentions.
sure they do...you let your guard down and they'll invade your body and make babies..they care like Trump cares..to the extent you bend over and submit...beyond that they don't have much attention span

BS...there's not enough chlorine in water to kill germs/virus...otherwise, hand sanitizers would be totally unnecessary.

...but hey, keep spinning.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/05/smarter-living/coronavirus-swimming-pool-water.html

“There probably is a theoretical possibility you could get infected by coronavirus from the pool water itself, but it’s so negligible it’s probably effectively zero,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Nope.

Viruses and pandemics don't care about your intentions.

Yeah, viruses and pandemics don't have the ability to care one way or the other. Unfortunately, people need to go outside to protest for a change in a hundreds year old oppression. People dont need to go to the bar or the club, etc.

No they don't they largely believe in what scientists agree with them, same for the right. We all listen to science as long as it agrees with us, the left isn't any different.

Totally wrong. Widely understood that the right doesn’t give two shits about science. See: Covid. See: the environment. Why are all the people against the mask Trumpers?

I disagree, and here's why even using COVID as an example. Almost every single study that comes out saying something different is immediately met with that can't be true! by whichever side it's going against popular opinion for. Lots of studies out there and yes they vary in how well they are done and have variables and all of that, but if the first reaction from the other side is to get all defensive and say NOPE NOPE NOPE that is opposed to scientific study in that if some study comes out and you think it's fishy you should go gather more data, to try to prove it and it shouldn't just be about I want to prove them wrong. Republicans have been doing it too, but it has been on both sides. They both point to studies and say look this is what this "scientist" said here's my proof and then rather than listen and actually try to comprehend what data their given it's nope that can't be right cause that's not what this other study said, or I don't want to hear this one.
edit: I can't speak for individuals but in general terms, this happened repeatedly during the last few months. You can't say you believe in "science" if any data that is put forth that a side doesn't like, or is against popular opinion is put out there and you toss it aside because "feelings" and stuff, that isn't science. That's group think and is against scientific principles, if you think no one on the left does that then we can just agree to disagree.
Trumps OWN FUCKING COVID TEAM of scientists is saying wear a mask and social distance etc and people won’t do it. Because they are Trumpers and righties who can’t fathom science and think Gods got this.

I'm not against masks.

The science also says that mass protests when we were beginning to flatten the curve were a dumb fucking idea. People seem to ignore the science when it suits their agenda.

People don't need to go outside in order to change hundreds of years of oppression?

Yes, they do. Otherwise change won't happen

In the middle of a pandemic we were getting a grip on, yes, they need to stay inside.

I was ready to be on lockdown all summer, to be honest. But when you normalize breaking the rules, you really can't enforce them anymore.

Protesting during a pandemic is never a optimal time to do so, especially when we were working to flatten the curve. But, the time to act is not always convenient. It just so happened that was when things finally hit the boiling point with a time bomb that has been waiting a long time to go off.

Whatever. Dumb fucking move and now we are going to go back on lockdown.

Yay social justice.

No, like going to war or any other historically changing moment the time is never convenient.

You sound like many others who are resentful because they had to stay home/on lockdown.

i would add that the pandemic might have been the icing on cake and without it, protests may not have happened, resulting in more time spent in the dark as a nation, ignoring the inequalities that should have been fixed kong ago.

i dont necessarily agree with the protesting during the pandemic, but i cant condemn anyone for fighting for thier rights, no matter what situation we are in. Pandemic, war, peace, none of it matters if you feel hundreds of years of oppression pushing you down.

The pandemic was definitely a fuel source on top of hundreds of years of oppression. George Floyd was the match.

This is 100% false. I work with 3 very liberal engineers who refuse to wear masks, they are extreme left. So your anecdotal, this is how the world is, isnt at all absolute.

Local man who spent years chanting 'burn it all down' is upset that it all got burned down.
