It's the perpetuation of widespread xenophobia that's the issue. If they started out calling this China Flu from the beginning, fine, but what Trump and his minions are doing now is deliberate. when 99.99999999% of the people and experts call it "coronavirus" and you deliberately emphasize CHINA, it will get his base riled up. It had its purpose and effect, apparently.

People are getting attacked over it. https://people.com/health/coronavirus-racist-attacks-against-asians/

Better stay away from your Asian docs too. Fucking morons.

I can't believe this orange MF still has the support he does from his base. It's incredibly insensitive to say and think it, but this virus will take out much of his supporters. Maybe that's just natural selection at work.

I just don't think it's the sort of "ethnic cleansing" that he seemed to espouse.

Just like with the Spanish Flu, and German Measles, and the Ebola (river) virus...it's always racism and division that causes people to name illnesses after specific places...

Yes, and the COVID19 virus already has a name of its own...did any of those viruses you listed have a similar monicker?...No.

... there was absolutely NO reason for Trump to be a complete dick by labeling it otherwise with "malice" towards China.

Bigger things to worry about people, than Trump pushing buttons on how he labels the virus.

The focus of some is... well it seems, obsessive.

Not a Trump support. Not a fan and I think he is a moron on many levels. With that said. I don't hang on his every word like some sheeple.

My priority in life and as a person who likes to pay attention to politics is to not hang on slang. I pay attention to the economics.

Some of your guys reaction is exactly what he wants and your reactions are whats letting him win and hold onto his base.

I mean really. how is that not widely known by now? Yet some of you feed into his behavior and actually promote it by flipping out over every tiny little thing.

Minimize the reaction and his trolling will be minimized in return.

...you're pissing me off again.

Science is going to be what saves us.

In the past, this president has been very science challenged.

From his previous anti-vaxxer statements, to windmills causing cancer, global warming, etc.

There are many examples of people not taking this virus and situation seriously.

All of his experts are calling it Covid-19.

I think if Trump were to use the scientific name for this virus it would help with the overall message to take this serious and listen to the experts.

Now THAT is a good point and well put. I can get behind that.

Should we start calling xenophobic stereotypes "Tennessee Slang?"

We need a wartime president.

We have a wartime president.

We have a medieval wartime president that prepared for the war by trying to build a wall around his castle.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) - this is not medieval times.

Vote better, people.

Lol. sorry. So many people get soo pissed off then the truth about things are presented. Even my damn father cant handle the truth.

Oh, I know, but people are not going to change the way they think or post because someone else thinks they should...just sayin'.

So what are people doing when they need a haircut? Should I risk it or give myself a bad one?

Don't skin me alive for asking this question:

How would Hillary have handled this outbreak?

I got one last Friday so I'm looking sharp. I'm not going to shave my face for a while though, hoping for a real thick beard when we come out of this.

Don't skin me alive for asking this question:

How would Hillary have handled this outbreak?

I suspect that at the very least there would not have been that large a turnover in the administration - so the people that were at the original 2017 pandemic exercise during the administration change-over would have at least been familiar with the subject and not caught with their pants down.

We cant know for sure. My guess though is that prior to the epidemic she would have maintained the pandemic response team. She would have started preparing for the outbreak in December or Jan, when it was becoming obvious that it would not be contained to China. She would have not called it the "Chinese Virus", she probably would have golfed a lot less also.

Somewhere between 11 1/2 months to 17 1/2 months. This is per Dr. Anthony Fauci's last news conference when he discussed the subject about two weeks ago.

Looks like 18 months at the earliest, according to the people actually working on vaccines, as per the article. Often a new vaccine, which this qualifies as, takes years due to testing and regulatory barriers.

This is a situation where the last thing our president should be doing is trolling.

Sure. Like I said, I think he is an idiot on many levels. Doesn't mean I have to hang and freak on everything he says and does, like some do.

Do I agree with him not using the consensus name for the vcirus"? No. Do I freak out? no. But you do have a good point. If our leader doesnt take it serious, then how can he expect the public to .

I don't care what Trump calls the virus, but what they say about the "wet markets" is true - animals in cages are stacked on top of other animals in cages, and all varieties of blood, guts, and shit puddle up on the floor (the inhumane treatment of these animals is the major problem here, but that issue requires it's own post). China is not the only country in the world with lax hygiene standards, but the scale of the problem in China is astounding. Don't ever forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic because the Chinese government doesn't care to enact and enforce reasonable health and hygiene standards. They have the power to do this, but they don't.

I have to say though... We should be pretty happy about the trend just calculating the numbers in the US, the death rate is going down just about every time I look. I've been checking here every day :
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
A week or two ago it was up around 5% and it's currently sitting just under 1.6, yesterday it was 1.8. That's a good trend. There are a few things, this virus spreads pretty rapidly and we are testing a lot more people (hopefully) so the numbers are going to continue to rise - I don't think the cases rising is a cause for panic at all -, but if the amount of "mild" cases continues to go up and the death rate continues to go down that is good. What we have to be concerned with is if severe cases rise and people unable to recover.
Still using this site :
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Right now in the US, the death rate is at 1.48% which is still more than we want but it's a good trend. World wide the trend isn't that great though it's actually gone up to about 10%. Some interesting things I've been keeping an eye out is that our "recovered" rate seems to be super low. The other good trend though is that serious/critical cases has gone down to 5% - This might not be good I guess depending on if they were upgraded to mild or passed... Hopefully, they get mass testing done and get a better handle on all of this.

Great....one of the doctors my fiance worked with on Monday just tested positive.

She works in a major university hospital.

She said they were very lax about the whole situation and didn't seem to take it seriously. The nurses and workers are pissed but the hospital administration seems to be taking things really lightly. She found out "through the grapevine" and not the administration. They were keeping as much of it as quiet as they could.

The systems are totally fucked. Everyday citizens are taking this more seriously than the system at large.
