Dude dviss you are trying to make this a war! You are confirming that you are calling me a yank as a term for people you are at war with.... You are saying "you people" you are crossing the line into it becoming a battle about racism. It wasn't. Look at the road you are going down.

DViss you are NOT taking away our right to make fun of other countries. It's not happening. Nope.

I'm going to make fun of the British for having bad teeth.

I'm going to make fun of Canadians for always apologizing for everything.

I'm going to make fun of the French for always surrendering and their women for not shaving..... areas.

You can't stop me! Other countries make fun of America ALL THE TIME.

The word yankee has several meanings that refer to people from different geographical regions: it can refer to a New Englander, to a person from the northern states (especially to a Union soldier during the Civil War), or to a person from anywhere in the United States. The first known attestation of the word Yankee is found in a letter from 1758 by General James Wolfe—he used it as a term of contempt for the American colonial troops in his command. The song Yankee Doodle, which in early versions was sung by British troops to mock colonial Americans, originally used Yankee in this way: Yankee Doodle came to town / For to buy a firelock / We will tar and feather him / And so we will John Hancock. However, colonial American soldiers turned the derisive epithet around and adopted it as a term of national pride.

:bgrin:

I have a very good British friend and he has all his teeth! Though, he has lived in America for a good amount of his lifetime so...

We haven't been to war with Australia, and one of my sisters neighbors is Australian and calls me that when I visit. Well, he says "you yanks and your cars" or "you yanks and your politics", not like "hey, you stupid yank, quit eyeballing my wife"

It's a name we call ourselves (in the sense of self labeling, not that I've ever referred to myself as one). I.e., "I'm a Yankee doodle", and other nations use it kind of as a funny nickname. See: Aussie or Brit.

can it be used in a pejorative manner? Sure. Does that mean EVERYTIME it's said it is? No.

Were they a country before the revolutionary war? :dunno:

Do you truly believe anyone from Australia or any other part of the Planet would refer to me as a Yankee? IJS

All of this said, we are currently at war with the Clippers and that nut puncher Chris Paul will be on the bench for the remainder of the playoffs.

If you went to England, there's a good chance you would be referred to as a Yank. It's a term for Americans. You can ignore that fact all you like, but you ARE a Yank by the very definition of what a Yankee is. You are from America, and if you want to take it further, you are from a northern state in the US.

You are a Yank.

And if there's anyone here who knows what it means to be a Yankee...it's Nate.

...and if you own a big car, then you have a "Yank Tank" - no, not kidding, that's what they call it.... and I'm totally OK with that. There is no implication about all Americans.

Americans used to take a derogatory term used by another country towards us and make it into a fucking song. We named one of our sports teams after that insult.

Now we would just cry and complain and rage about how insensitive that other country is.

"you yanks and your cars" or "you yanks and your politics"

I'll finish those sentences:

You yanks and your cars they use way to much gas and you're ruining your environment.

You yanks and your politics (even though Rupert Murdoch is Australian), you have Donald Trump as your Republican front-runner..

Both pretty negative statements.

You know what they called me?

Brotha.

Those statements would offend you?

So if you did go to England, and someone were to call you a Yank, you would get offended?

Lol I know this and have never had an argument against it. But again, as I refer to in the other post I've been to England and they don't call me that.

So?

I've lost track of what the point of this discussion is.

Isn't calling you "brotha" a racial stereotype? Why doesn't that bother you? If I call you brotha, or homie, isn't that a stereotype?

YES!! NOW YOU'RE GETTING IT!

I use the term Brother (I actually pronounce the er) for every male I meet. Throws people for a loop sometimes.

Edit: and yes it is annoying to be called this simply because I'm black.

Chris Paul is a Dirty player and thought it was a pre-requisite of the French national Basketball team to punch people in the Nads because Nic Batumk dude, when in actuality CP3 did it before he did, further implicating that basketball player of all nationalities worship NBA players as their heroes, nad tappers or otherwise.

Eh, I've had plenty of people call me "brother."

Wow!! That really happened?? Link?
Yeah was last year i believe. Lillard was nursing to sprained fingers, pre game he shook pauls hand and you could see paul squeeze and the almost shocked look on lillards face like wow this guy has zero sportsmanship or class.

In the sprit of how this thread is going my lazy yankee cracker fat ass couldnt find a link after a quick google attempt.

I've seen people get pretty offended by being called Brother before. A minor little squabble between 2 people of the same ethnicity and the one trying to diffuse it said "hey brother, it's no big deal" the other guy flew off the handle because "you are not my brother, we are not related in any way shape or form".... So while most of us use the term in a sense of unity a way to say we are all in this together, others are offended because they only see it as one usage a person born of the same parents. So sometimes even when we use "safe" terms to try to smooth things over it can be construed in negative ways.

Nate, I think you are confused.

I know a lot of French women. They all shave.

I know a lot of women from Eugene. Many of them do not.
