Question:

Pick from Brooklyn, 2025 Round 1 via Phoenix

Does that mean the pick is based off of Brooklyn or Phoenix's regular season record? In other words, if you are traded that pick, do you want Brooklyn or Phonenix to suck?
I think that's Phoenix's pick they gave Brooklyn in the Durant trade. So we'd want Phoenix to suck if that's true.

Yeah Marks is one of the most useless people they have at ESPN. His trades are always one sided and I heard him on a podcast say that he doesn't really stay in contact with anyone but just tries to look at things from each team's perspective when he posits this bullshit.
Totally agree, but I don't think it's his fault. I think his bosses say "make up a stupid Dame trade for today's show, doesn't matter if it makes sense". And then the host points out that the trade doesn't make sense for both teams.
Rinse, repeat the next day.

Honestly, I feel bad for the guy.

I think (I've already said I think Hart was probably suboptimal) that there was only one way to get Dame help at the deadline or this summer--clear as much off the books and get as many firsts as possible. He did both. Did he fail to get a trade using all of those things ? Yep. Were we getting Zion for Hart and Simons and #3, but NOT for #23, Simons and #3)? I don't think so. But the process used was to clear salary and accumulate picks to get someone Dame wanted in here. The league didn't play ball with him, and he didn't want to waste Scoot for something lame and needle-stagnant. I don't know that that's "lying". Just like (until and if it comes out that the Vulcans said NO) I'm not mad that we couldn't get a S&T with one of the marquee free agents (like, say, Draymond). We didn't have the powder and/or Dame didn't have the juice. That's on Cronin, too...but I don't know that it means he lied and purposefully dissed Dame.

Thank you for getting it. The heat Cronin is taking for not surrounding DL with big time FA's is NOTHING compared to the heat he would have taken, had he executed one of those trades based on what it would have cost the franchise to force that event. His job #1, is to elevate the franchise. It would have been "O" Scoots and Sharpes for a long.......long....time. I have zero doubt he tried. But there has to be a cost line drawn in the sand. Thank god he didn't cross it.

I meant in general. I realized after posting that you might think that, but I was too lazy to edit.

Not necessarily. I just think there's a world where you think Cronin failed living up to his own expectations but also doing the right thing by keeping the picks. I think both things are true.

Cronin has been GM for how long? He came trying to clean up a mess while keeping one player happy. That is thankfully about over and we get to see him and his team operate. Yes, trading Dame should have been the first thing he did, but he had an irrational fan base to deal with.

I'm excited to see him unleashed.

So, he lied because the fans are children and he knows better?

If I had something good to go off of, I'd be excited about Cronin. As of now, he's nothing but a yes man to me who got lucky with where his picks landed and having Mike Schmitz at his disposal.

He hasn't won a trade yet that Dame didn't have influence on.

I look forward to new ownership, and by default, a new front office.

If I was Joe Cronin and I was reading some of the shit that Heat fans are saying, I would never trade Dame to that team in a million years. Never. Who is their biggest rival? That’s where I’m trading him.

Agreed. And Joe has been an employee of Portland for a long time. This is his chance to create his legacy with this trade.

I'm looking at it like this. These fuckers didn't want to sell the team to Phil no matter how much sense the media and fans said it makes. I just don't see them folding at the end of the day for a shit sammich.

Miami could end up being the spot but i don't think we get bent over in the end.

A lot of people don't understand the challenges of PR, and your reaction to all of this is an excelent example.
Yes, he hired a brilliant draft scout, which is a huge part of the job. Yes, while trying to placate Dame and fans, he has managed to put the Blazers in a wonderful position moving forward post Dame.... I call that an excellent result.

lol if his aim was to get good PR, I can tell you he's failed amongst Blazers fans. Seems like he could learn a thing or two from me.

I'd be more inclined to give him credit if he can net us a lottery level prospect or two plus future picks. I'm not holding my breath.

That's cool, it sounds like it's too early to call. At least the anticipation makes for an entertaining off season. It's all entertainment...Enjoy it

I don't understand fans who are obsessed with "winning trades." Isn't the big picture much more important?

THEN:
Bulls trade grade: A
It cannot be overstated how much offensive firepower Vucevic brings to the Bulls. He's one of only four players this season averaging 24 points and 10 boards a game -- the other three are all MVP contenders (Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid). The pick-and-pop game between him and Zach LaVine is going to be a dream come true for the Bulls, and are probably hoping to stagger some of their minutes together so that when LaVine goes to the bench its offense doesn't become stagnant as its been prone to do.

Magic trade grade: B-
I'm actually surprised the Magic couldn't get a better deal out of the Bulls or any other team in the league for a two-time All-Star who is putting up career numbers.

NOW
Looking back at the trade that doomed the Chicago Bulls
Looking back at the trade that ended up dooming the Chicago Bulls and their efforts to win now.

It’s not hard to find NBA trades that became disasters for one franchise but incredible opportunities for another. However, the Chicago Bulls-Orlando Magic deal from two trade deadlines ago appears more lopsided with each passing day.

In March of 2021, the Chicago Bulls acquired center Nikola Vucevic from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Otto Porter Jr., Wendell Carter Jr., and two lightly protected first-round picks. The trade came out of nowhere. The Magic and Bulls were both at the bottom of the Eastern Conference in 2021 and appeared to each be in rebuild mode.

But the Bulls had a plan. That summer, Chicago’s front office made aggressive moves to make the team a contender: they traded for a star in DeMar DeRozan and acquired some of the game’s best role players in Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball.

Almost overnight, the team transmuted into a win-now mentality. The front office had grown impatient with losing and wanted to expedite their rebuild. Indeed, the Bulls are one of the most prolific franchises in professional sports but haven’t reached an NBA Finals since they had Micheal Jordan.

Chicago’s plan has, unsurprisingly, backfired. The team made progress in the standings last season but was blown out by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulls have all but collapsed this year, falling at the moment to the ninth seed in the East with their best players being in constant trade rumors.

Chicago’s failure should be a message to front offices trying to cut corners in their rebuild: be patient. The Bulls’ trade for Vucevic stemmed from anxiety that they hadn’t had a championship team in decades and needed to rejuvenate the franchise. It led very quickly to turmoil.

The Magic, by contrast, was willing to take things slow with their rebuild, as small-market teams are apt to do. They have in turn developed one of the best young cores in the NBA, and much of it is thanks to Chicago’s misplaced aggressive team-building.

2 e's in woj, the trolls are real.

Edit: yep. Zapping it to not give impersonating trolls views.

Why does it feel like Christmas but we are getting ready to open a present from an aunt that always gives you a shit present. Last year she gave us a certificate that said she donated to her favorite charity in our name. The year before she gave us one of those tiny zen gardens for your desk. We have low expectations and somehow she will still disappoint us.

I've seen your gift lists...Definitely better than a pack of socks. Brace yourself.
