Zombie Derrick Jones to Portland

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

I hope for this too; but who will run that 2nd unit? Hezonja was the only one last year who even tried to run a fast break. He was bad at it, but he tried.

I think it would make sense to make sure Dame or CJ are always on the floor, for this reason.

Please raise your hand if you fit in this category. I keep hearing these statement be made, but I don't know who these people are!

If you trashed the offensive shortfall caused by Harkless/Aminu and love these two additions, now is the time to own it, and explain why.
To me Harkless was on and off with his energy and accepting of his role. He struggled being 4/5th option.
I liked AFA and I think he playing the 4 now, is more conducive to the way the game is played today.

The first unit doesn't run and as of now, the 2nd unit needs to be run by Dame or CJ from the first unit unless Ant progresses a LOT. So the 2nd unit isn't going to run either. Portland is a walk it up, slow down, tough shots by Dame/CJ or kick out '3's for teammates. Not sure how any of that fits for Jones.

^^^^^^^^^^^^Exactly. DJJ went the route of Meyers in Miami. Played quite a bit in the regular season and then collected dust for the Playoffs for the most part.

Well said... you're not one of those "people" that keep getting cited then. I feel like this group of - hated Harkless/Aminu and love the Covington/Jones additions is a very small minority.

Never said anything about that I think salesman should close 100%. You'll have to let me know where that came from.

Come on T. I said great salesmen are lucky to close 50% and you claimed to close 100% and 90%. and you don't know where my 100% statement came from?.....

An absolute upgrade over those two

I didnt hate the pairing. I just always felt like we needed something similar but an improvement over the two. I think we likey got that here.

Why? Has either of them shown an interest in running a fast break on a consistent basis?

It's crazy how the same people who hated the Aminu/Harkless pairing because of their shooting are excited about the acquisitions of forwards that shot 33.5% and 28.0% from 3 last year.
Basically, ZERO people didn't like Aminu/Harkless, we just didn't like them starting.

Now that we have somebody from the Heat here (not counting Whiteside because who knows what goofy answer he might give), I would ask him: How did a team like Miami, with no more superstars than us (in fact, one less), get into the finals? What are you guys doing differently on a day to day basis. Actually, if I was GM, I would call up Myers Leonard and ask him, because he would be able to compare the best. Doesn't this make a lot of sense? But I know it won't be done.

What doesn't make a lot of sense is them having one less superstar than we have or had... who the fuck is our second superstar? I only ask because we don't even have a second all-star.

Can't be wrong that way... smart play!
Analyzing the game based off watching it is the right way to analyze the game. Looking at a piece of paper is not.

In the East playoffs, defense was their calling card. The 2-3 zone really took the wind out of teams with dudes that like to slash to the rim. Having a guy like Bam anchoring the defense obviously doesn't hurt.

When it came to the Lakers, I'd like to think they would have up up a tougher fight with a health Dragic, but who knows?

He's in his 4th year. Maybe give him some years before we bitch about how he did or didn't play last year?

They weren't going to get a player who has deep playoff experience for the MLE.
As a team trying to contend you make signings based on what you know a guy can give you, not based off what you hope a guy might be able to give years down the line.

With FA's that are experienced playoff vets, they have to want to come to Portland as a place to play and live. Im not convinced we are an attractive destination with that type of player, especially ones that have lived in good weather cities and tasted success. I would guess we made offers to players that many in here would be happy with but they flat out tuned down coming here. Thats part of the equation wit FA's.

Don't base everything on the 3 point line to show how he can help us. The thing he does really well is play defense plus he can score other ways. Really how many opportunities due think this going shoot anyways when majority of the shots come from Dame CJ and Nurk. Plus he also dice up our defense last year for 19 in Miami and had few others games he score big. Because he has trouble shooting the 3 point shot don't mean can't help us in other ways for us to win.

The reaction I'm getting in here is very similar to the reaction I got when I tried to tell everyone how trash Mario was last summer when we signed him. DJJ isn't necessarily trash though, just a horrible fit for Stotts.

I'm basing everything on the system, which will likely use him primarily as a spot-up shooter. Hopefully Stotts gets more creative than he has been.

Because guys who cant shot have been a huge liability in the Playoffs, this has been our biggest weakness because opponents dont guard them and dare them to shot. This dude is a worse shooter than Aminu and Harkless, who were liabilitys on offense
It really don't matter if you got great 3 point shooters. Team going play the same way against us is to take Dame away by the trap

And a similar reaction when you tried telling us how terrible a pick Trent was. Win some, lose some I suppose.

I think that they signed him for both what he gives them now and what he can give them as he matures. In most cases, the players that contending teams sign (outside of the superstars) are seasoned vets. And the seasoned vets that are out there probably didn't want to sign with Portland. So their next best option is to go with someone who fits one of their needs (someone who plays defense) and fits another one (young and with potential).

Never said Trent wouldn't develop, literally didnt like giving up two 2nd round picks. Always said Trent would be a steal if he became a good defender, just didn't expect it.

Jones will be a good pickup if he can shoot well, I just don't expect it. Thing is, you're taking about a rookie versus a player we've seen play in the NBA.
