There were reports about a month ago that they were going to ask HW to take less than the max.
Think the problem is because they don't want to lose Deng for nothing. And they'd probably be in lux tax territory unless they get rid of McBob as well.

Some of those are no big deal to renounce (Joe Johnson, Stoudemire, Wright) but some of those are not no-brainers (Deng and Tyler Johnson who they really like as a young guy). But yes, huge is at least slight overstatement. Cut for sure though. And it is a HUGE cut if they do keep one of their cap holds or resign a guy.
Oddly enough, what Wade was looking for last year (50M/3y) is significantly lower than that slot. If he were to take a salary at that level this summer, that would start at only 15.5M. So, they could still keep Johnson, Wade, and Whiteside, and not have any issues (except for losing Deng, which they'd probably do in a heartbeat if it meant keeping Whiteside).

Yep. OKC has to choose between Ibaka and Adams and it seems that they have chosen Adams.

Even then they are going to be in Luxury Tax hell soon (assuming Durant comes back of course).

Its a no brainer to me. Adams game got so much better this year. He's borderline top 5 center after watching the playoffs.

Wade seems to be on the LeBron plan of taking 1 year deals with possible 2nd year options though. Might fancy himself of leaving to join some other super team at some point. Who knows why but he is also getting very broken down so MIA would be foolish to give him 3 year deal without outs imo.

Just because he looks like Adam Morrison's big brother doesn't mean you have to love the guy.

They may also be able to buy out Bosh, if it's decided he can't play any more - which is quite possible.

So if our summer is signing someone like Whiteside with our cap space, and nothing else, will that be enough?

I just don't know. Honestly, I'd almost rather have Howard. I know he's older, and I know he has a history of back problems.... but the guy is a proven scorer. He's a threat in the post. Whiteside is not.

Howard rated out slightly better last year in the post (.82 ppp vs .79) but neither are effecient enough to make it a big part of your offense. The advantage Howard has on Whiteside right now is experience and the history of being an impactful defensive presence. Whiteside still has some work to do on that end despite his impressive block #'s.

Is that your final answer?

If his name wasn't Gary Payton how many of you would want to draft him?
I think GPII's heritage has something to do with it. Which is not unreasonable if it gives a glimpse into his perceived character and motivation. I think the OSU connection also contributes to his perceived worth, because playing locally provided us with an opportunity to watch him for a couple of years. Had he played elsewhere, we would know little about him and probably most here would write him off. So combined, I feel more comfortable drafting what I think is a known commodity, to an unknown or lesser known commodity. Some here think he has both the physical talent and the mental approach to help the Blazers in an area of need. I think GPII is probably a bit under the radar compared to more hyped players from programs with more exposure, which makes some of us feel he is attainable at a good price. I'm not necessarily on the GPII "bandwagon", but I'd be content if we bought a pick and picked him up.

I wouldn't say I love the guy. I just think he's a damn good Center. He showed me a lot in the playoffs. Especially at only 22, at a position that takes a while to figure out.

I'm not really much of a GP2 fan. His lack of ability to shoot worries me in a Stotts system.

Yeah, but not by much--maybe $900K, with the understanding that he'd also get 7.5% raises instead of the 4.5% he'd get from other teams, thereby still making more over the 4 years.

Whiteside averaged 14 pts a game last year. Howard averaged 13.7 last year, 15.8 the year before. As his athleticism has declined, so has his ability to score.

His scoring dropped like a rock after leaving Orlando. Do we know definitively that it was his athleticism or could it be system/bad fit?

The guy was a monster against us in the playoffs. He's still capable of scoring.

Damn wish people would get off the name. why I like him has nothing to do with his name. Seems like a great fit for what we need either late 1st round early 2nd round and that's a guy who can come off the bench play stellar d on opposing guards, is extremely athletic and smart. Seems like more people have a problem with his name. He's not likely a star but IMO will be a very good NBA player and his game will be better than he was at college level.

Whiteside scored 22 and 20 against us this year. Everyone is still capable of scoring big games now and then. Especially against us! LOL

It seems like we only have cap space when everyone has cap space..... or when there's no good free agents.

Exactly. In a league known for its guard play, Payton was the best defender in both of his seasons. He is not treading on his name - his play was certainly deserving of a 2nd round pick.

I want Blazers to draft him & his name has nothing to do with it.

When I look at the advanced stats that I trust, he rates very well. He has the size and athleticism. His skill set would be ideal next to Dame & CJ. Yes, his jump shot is suspect, but he checks all the other boxes for me. That's why he's likely available where Portland could afford to obtain a pick.

My god. Doesn't that seem kind of high for Whiteside? Isn't he a specialist with a suspect attitude?

Deandre Jordan is a "specialist" - an all-NBA 1st team specialist... and I, personally, prefer HW.

CJ for Butler - would you do it?

Butler is the only SG I would trade CJ for besides Klay (I consider Harden scum and kind of a PG). So yes. And it is only because of the D difference. CJ can probably beat Butler one on one but I am thinking team game here. I would hate doing the deal because I think CJ is a lifer and the best spoken guy in the NBA but I would probably do it.

My prediction? Rodney Hood, Alec Burks and 2 Future 1sts for Butler.
