Just posted this in the Miami game thread -

I know this a sensitive subject. Trying not to draw any conclusions. Just looking at trends -

Last year, 15% of Scoot's games were 'good', 32% were 'bad'.
This year, 13% of Scoot's games have been 'good', and 37% have been 'bad'.

Do the Blazers need to play him more and get him more game time experience? Does coaching drive a big part of this lack of progress?

Early in the Miami game Scoot drove to the left and had an opportunity for the left-handed layup but opted for the difficult up and under using his right hand and missing the shot. How does a player make it into the NBA, and be a second-year player, and still be so right hand dominant? Is this on the player, the coaching staff, or both?

Scoot is not getting that run and still coming off the bench. Maybe if he was starting, and playing 35-40 mins a game like Thompson where he can be comfortable in his role, maybe he would put up, you know, the same stats he did towards the end of last season in the last 7 games where started and put up these numbers :

19.4 PPG
9.7 Assists
3.4 Reb
41.7 FG
41.7 3P FG on 6.9 attempts per game.

At the end of a season when we'd been tanking for many weeks, the coach felt sorry for the crappy rookie #3 pick and played him, so he'd be better the next season. As we now see, it didn't work. That's all ya got?

For many underachieving rookies, the assistant coach would work with him during the summer at the Blazers practice facility. But Scooter didn't show up. When I noted this here last Fall, his defenders said that Scooter has a court at his home, where he worked out.

I said 1) That's his story...how do you know he worked out often and hard? 2) That's with no supervision...no boot camp-like coach yelling at him to work out daily not weekly, wake up early like 6am, do more reps after he thinks he can't, get more sweaty, etc. 3) Did a coach, even if not visiting Scooter's home, design a written daily step-by-step program for him (20 reps doing X, 50 reps doing Y, etc.), or did he just horse around on the court when he felt playful?

So I used the word "lazy" and all hell broke loose. That pissed off about 5 posters. Good, maybe they'll wake up.

Two things can be true.

1. He's not being developed correctly.
2. He's not playing good enough.

We used the #3 pick on him. We owe it to the franchise to give him the runway. I say that knowing full well he may never be as good as Ant. We made the decision and now we must see it through. There's no choice.

If I was Chauncey, I'd be chastising him for avoiding shots like Ben Simmons. The only way he becomes a positive is if he's aggressive.

I answered the "It's hopeless, we're stuck with this situation" comment one page ago:

The situation is not set in stone. We could trade him soon while we can still get a mid-1st-round pick.

Or?? Sometimes players just suck and not EVERYBODY pans out lol…

ppl always tend to forget that

more like what you said is all you got, you sound like a classic hater more than anything.

And now, "we see it didn't work"? Last I checked he still hasn't started and played big mins yet this year....That's all you got? Move along lol

Could be. It's too soon to know.

Gotta give him runway so we can find out sooner rather than later.
Agreed. We're not thru year 2 yet, and he's only 20 years old. He has time to turn this around.

We're all Blazer fans here, so I think I can safely say everyone is rooting for this kid.

Just ignore this clown, he will keep doing this when Scoot has a bad game and stay quiet when he does, Classic troll that should be ignored
Of course he will.
I just wish he'd call me "Big Bro" too.

I said this a long time ago and I still think it's true. They have coached him to slow down to avoid mistakes. And he has cut down on turnovers but he is having no positive effect on team success. He needs to be coached to limit mistakes even when going full speed.

Chauncey is a shitty Xs and Os guy, but I would hope a HOF point guard could help develop Scoot.

Half of the fourth period and no mention of Scoot in the game thread to say how abysmal he is. Have people given up?

and real question without making fun of you @THE HCP. You preached patience for 18 months now. And I tend to be on this side of the spectrum as well with players. But do your confidence stays high or you are losing patience, even a little ?
Won’t judge him until he’s Dame’s age when he was a rookie. Just a bar I set for myself with him when we drafted him. I believe if he was getting constant minutes not behind Ant, he would be learning and growing faster. Just my opinion.

It would be *nice* if Scoot was kicking ass and taking names. It would make us feel better but it is more important to draft a true superstar caliber player. MVP type.

thanks for the answer. It makes sense.

Yes, Toumani Camara is currently gaining national attention, particularly for his defensive contributions and growing offensive role with the Portland Trail Blazers, with several national analysts and media outlets highlighting his recent performance and improvement throughout the season; Blazer fans aren't the only ones noticing his growth.
Key points about Camara's recent attention:
  • Improved play:
He is receiving recognition for his consistent defensive play, strong rebounding, and developing offensive skills.
  • Media coverage:
Sports writers from outlets like The Athletic
are including Camara in lists of players who have impressed them this season.
  • Blazers rebuild factor:
With the team in a rebuilding phase, Camara's emergence as a key player is garnering more focus.
Makes you wonder about Camara’s trade value….

By the way, despite coming off the bench, Scoot is leading our team in assists and is second in steals. He needs to start. I don’t care about per minute stats. He needs to actually play 40 minutes a game for at least 2 seasons. Then we will know what we have. As it is, he’s had a game winner and a 12/12 FT game in the last few weeks. A 19 point 10 assist 1 turnover game. These are called flashes. Patience! I don’t care what anonymous executive thinks.

Scoot is Dennis smith Jr 2.0

Broke jumper with crazy athleticism that u rarely see it because teams dare them too shoot..

Dennis smith jr rookie stats
15 pts 5 assist 3 rebounds 39% FG 31 % 3pt , 3 TO

Scoot rookie stats
14 pts 5 assist 3 reb 38.5 % FG , 32 % 3pt , 3.5 TO

Second year ??? Both declined lol .

Dennis smith jr
13 ppg , 4 assist , 3 rebounds, 42 % FG , 32 % 3pt ,

Scoot
10 ppg , 5 assist , 3 rebounds, , 39 % FG , 29 % 3pt

Dallas knew right away after that second season

so, gauge Scoot in his 4th season against Dame as a rookie with no NBA experience

I don't completely buy this same-age gauge. Scoot will have gone thru 4 off-seasons, 4 training camps, and 3 seasons by the time he's 22. I think seasons of NBA experience goes quite a distance in off-setting the same age gauge

yes, Dame had a big head start with 3+ seasons at Weber St. But the thing is that many players who have that similar leg up never get lapped by somebody with G-league experience

Dallas knew right away after that second season
The Blazers knew right away too. That's why we let go of Smith, a #9 pick, 3 years ago midseason, when he was injured.

Unlike Smith, Little Scooter has a sunk cost, so everyone's scared to trade him in this short window while we can still get a mid-1st round pick.

I repeatedly said the same during the 2nd season of Meyers Leonard, and status-quoers said, oh we can wait a few years before doing anything drastic. By his 3rd season, we couldn't fool anyone into a 1st round pick anymore.
