Enough with the small ball basketball

I want to see a lot more of this:

All of those assists were during Nurk Fever (his first 20 games as a Blazer in Feb/Mar 2017). Just look at how many of them were passes from the high post to cutters diving to the rim. And of those, look how many of them were to Moe. If Collins can consistently knock down the open corner 3, with Nurk in the high post, it will spread the floor for Moe and the guards to cut to the basket. More player movement, more ball movement, more assists and more easy baskets. It's exactly what this team needs.

That was so effective, I have no idea why it wasn't part of the game plan in 2017-18. It was like with a full offseason to think about it, Terry decided to park Nurk down on the low block and force feed him early to get him "involved" and "focused". All that seemed to do was cause Nurk to resort to wild, low percentage flip shots, and unforced TOVs against other starting centers. Fuck that. Save the low post beast Nurk for when the other team goes small and he can simply overpower his smaller defender. Early in the game, or when the other team goes big, get Nurk in the high post, spread the floor with your shooters and run backdoor cuts for Moe.

Again just go back and watch that video. That is some beautiful shit, right there.

Whenever this guy posts all I can think of is.
Thomas Robinson allstar potential & Greg Oden must be resigned.

Collins and Aminu?

Not enough in my book. The last time we made it to the conference finals we had Sheed and Brian Grant.
I would even settle for having Meyers and Caleb playing real minutes but that didn't happen

Let me offer this scenario, getting rid of one of Harkless or Aminu, lets say Aminu, then the depth chart:

Dame. Napier
CJ, Counaghton
Turner, Harkless, Leyman
Ed Davis, Caleb, Harkless (small ball)
Nurkic, Meyers, Collins

That's better structure and a stronger team, we can still use small ball at the right timing but wouldn't be what our gameplan is based on. Meyers and Caleb both have 3 point range so we'd still have shooting in the front court but also size and strength

Ummmmmmmmm, I, uhhhh, really? That rotation is your solution?

Either I'm not aware yet of your trolling style or your post shows a complete lack of understanding of the game of basketball. Discuss.

It's my solution? it would be a better rotation than we played this year.
My solution, honestly, is to fire the coach

My thnking is we don't need much. We have two of the best backcourt players in the league and a variety of big men. We don't have less fire-power than the Celts do, we just have an inferior coach, and we're playing too shabby, too small, the kind of basketball that doesn't work in the offseason. A few weeks before post season we were rolling, Dame and CJ co-existed beautifully and we won every game, I wouldn't change much but I hope they replace the coach

So, winning the summer league championship is that important to you? Sorry, but you're way off base here. Going big doesn't work in the rat ball, guard dominated summer league. If we really want to win the summer league championship, we should be scouring the G league for undersized ball hogs that thrive in an unstructured, undisciplined environment.

You forgot the green font!

Hey, he was the one that's unhappy our style of play isn't conducive to offseason success.

Seems like it is to me. Of all the teams that made the playoffs, we made it to the offseson the fastest.

So let me get this straight. You want our lineup to be bigger and your solution to that is to move Collins from backup PF to 3rd string Center? Please explain the logic there.

Yeah, this is like Exhibit Z on why Terry should have been fired by now. It's unfathomable that we saw such amazing play between Nurk/Moe, and then the moment Terry actually has the ability to codify it as part of our game plan he instead decides to throw it ENTIRELY out of the window. Fucking idiot.

Small ball is here to stay. The Warriors and Rockets play small ball. The Blazers , with Nurk in the post, actually play more of a conventional style, and as Jusaf gets better at finishing, I believe it will pay big dividends. But teams will continue jacking from long distance for the foreseeable future. The better Nurk, and Zach become at finishing in the post, the more big ball you will see.

There's still a whole lot of value in centers that can set good screens and defend the pick and roll. Nurk is great at both.

There's also value in rebounding and so far, Nurk has proven to be a much better rebounder than Collins. Nurk is just bigger, stronger and takes up more space. Until/unless Collins bulks up substantially, he's going to continue to be pushed around by other PFs and completely over matched against other centers. And, do we really want him to bulk up and risk losing his lateral quickness?

I'd prefer to keep both. Nurk has already proven he can completely transform our defense from one of the worst in the league to one of the best. Right now, Collins has the perfect body and developing skill set to be a stretch 4 in today's game. Keep both and use them both to their strengths. Nurk at the 5 and Collins at the 4.

BNM
I don't understand why we don't do that either.

I'm not completely sold on Collins, but against certain lineups, they could do some damage

Please elaborate on how losing our 2 best on the ball defenders makes us better. Discuss.

If this is the roster, your line-up is screwed. Turner/Ed/Nurk would be suicide on offense. Assuming this is your roster, the line-up should look more like:

Dame / Bazz
CJ / Pat
Harkless / Turner / Jake
Collins / Biggie
Nurk / Ed / Meyers

I still don't quite understand why we don't have at least one new player on the roster (I'm with you on getting rid of Aminu, but we should get something in return). I also don't understand why Bazz and Jake are still on the roster.

I think playing bigger, even with Turner, Ed and Nurk together (and with Dame and CJ don't forget) would give us more fire power on offense also, more guys setting strong screens, more people to throw the ball inside to. I'm not on the Collins bandwagon, I think if Caleb got the same chance he would be more impressive than what Collins showed us

I think ultimately the direction that teams will take will be two smaller guards, two forwards who will play in a very similar manner without clear distinction between 3 and 4 positions (see Tobias Harris, Otto Porter) and a rim protector with great shot blocking and rebounding skills (Gobert, Capela etc.). I think teams will aim to have at least one tall, defensively solid player but the positions behind them will largely consist of versatile players who can shoot.

Yes, I can see it now. Evan Turner posting up with Ed and Nurk spacing the floor. Great idea....

I think it’ll be one ball handler 3 guys who play basically 3 and D type roles with hopefully one of them being able to be the back up ball handler when option 1 gets trapped, and one guy who’s bigger and can control the paint. It seems like Boston, Houston, GS, and Cleveland were all built that way, Cleveland was kind of an exception because it’s really Lebron and a bunch of “ok” nba talent.

How much floor spacing do we need? if we have both Dame and CJ spacing is not a weakness, but we need to play stronger, we didn't always play small ball

Another point, you say that's how teams play but how are the Cavs stronger, with lebron at the 4 and TT at the 5 or with Lebron at the 5 and Kevin Love at 4?

Do you understand how basketball works...?

Kevin Love plays the 5 over LeBron. And it's usually because they're able to put more shooting around LeBron, as well as more players that can run the floor allowing LeBron options in transitions and spacing to go to work.

I think what's optimal is a big two guard that can switch with the 3 and 4. So think of something like Butler/Porter/Harris.

Do you understand how basketball works...?

Basketball isn't just about 3point shooting, it's about inside game as well, playing in the paint, defense, rebounds.
One of the reasons we were outplayed in the playoffs is you live by the 3, you die by the 3, and we didn't have enough muscle to bang inside

You don't watch the games, as youve said. Yet you claim to know whats wrong...

The problem was Dame was getting trapped off every pick n roll, and we had a lot of turnovers because we still ran it. As a relief option, we need guys that can attack and shoot. Someone that can catch the outlet pass and attack and either get a layup or draw the defense away for a kick out pass to other good shooters that could make teams pay for trapping the pick n roll in the first place. This has to happen quick before the defense can rotate back. Bigger is slower, and none of Turner, Davis, and Nurkic can shoot. So they'd have the last 3 defenders who aren't trapping just sit in the paint and handle those guys easily. There'd be no where to go, and no one to kick out to. It'd be a clusterfuck, and would be extremely ineffective. And we wouldn't be able to attack the rotating defense fast enough to exploit it because sniffer = slower. Plus, every time Dame or CJ drove, they'd be driving into 4 defenders, since ET, Ed, and Nurkic can't shoot.

"We have to muscle inside" - that's a cliche term that doesn't reference any specific basketball action. But you don't reference complicated basketball actions in a realistic context, yet you sit back and claim you know more than anyone on the site.

You act like you have the solution to everything, and are somehow enlightened. I remember an OT thread where you claimed you had the cure for cancer. Did you..? You think you can fix the problems with this team with ideas that would certainly (and obviously) fail.
