Evan Turner becomes a Blazer

The thing which haunts me the most is that Philly didn't want Turner.

THE SIXERS THOUGHT THEY COULD DO BETTER THAN TURNER SO THEY DUMPED HIM AND NOW WE'RE ASKING HIM TO MARRY US
The Sixers are idiots though... I mean they team with Turner/Iggy/Jrue/Thad was one game from the ECF and they blew that up in like one summer.

Blazers are paying starter money for plug and play role players. Where do I hang myself after we match the inevitable 17 million a year offer sheet that Crabbe signs after teams realize we just gave 17.5 to someone that plays his position and Crabbe realizes he has more competition for minutes?

I doubt it was a panic move

Neil and the Blazers rank FA and they go after him. They start at 1 and work their way down the list. Turner just happened to be the next guy.

As far as being overpaid...that's just the NBA right now. Conley for $30M per? Are you serious?
I didn't even think about the Conley contract. Fuck that. and just thinking about how Tyreke Evans is gonna get a max next year.... I think turners contract is ok.

Olshey may have signed the guy, but you can bet Stotts had a plan for each potential free agent. He's played our players to their strengths, asked them to work on certain weaknesses, and managed a very good 2015-16 season for our Blazers. I can't wait to see how he will incorporate Turner in to the lineup.

. Trade flexibility is worth more than Turner at 70 million. We didn't have to sign garbage.

So if we lose Mo and GH and get Turner in return how much better are we? 5%, 10%?

I guess this works out as an OK move at the margins, but it doesnt do shit with respect to increasing this team's odds of getting past the second (or maybe first?) round next year or any year after.

Welcome to the treadmill I guess?

I think we have every right to be concerned. Yeah some of us may overreact but we just gave a big contract to Evan Turner for fucks sake in what looks like a panic move just to get something. Stupid idea. Should of made small ass moves and waited till next summer. Got to where we needed to get to and hold off till next summer.

Not going to read through 28 pages of this because, well, fuck that. Don't need to see THAT much whining on here. We didn't land Durant and Howard, Olshey is an idiot.

I really like the signing of Turner. We had a lot of discussion on this board about how, outside of hating his inconsistency, we missed Nic's playmaking last season. That Aminu wasn't all that great with decision making and the ball in his hand.

Nic's 3 years under Stotts, he had an assist % right around 20. Which is Turner's career average. Turner is going to essentially be playing the Nic role in our offense next season which allows us to have a 3rd(4th with Plumlee) playmaker on the floor. Something again that many people said we were lacking. We had Dame and CJ as ball handlers last season. Plumlee was probably the 3rd best player on our team handling the ball. That's no good.
I mean, people started shitting immediately on the Parsons news, but then are pissed that we went from Parsons to Turner? Just because it's plan B. Yeah, it doesn't come with Dwight. Still don't think we need the rim protector everyone clamored for, since we were a top team at the rim. What we need/want is guys with some flexibility to play different spots on the floor, and switch around with other players. Nic just got 50 million dollars more than Turner. And for what? What does he do better? He hasn't been a good 3 point shooter in like 4 years. He was Aminu level the past 3 years. And people crap on Aminu

Turner gives us another good ball handler and creator, someone who can run our secondary pick and roll with Plumlee similarly to how Nic and Rolo used to. It'll take pressure off of CJ when Dame exits the game. We all saw how once Dame went out, It was CJ pick and roll attempts to score, Turner will alleviate some of that pressure, and give both of our guys a little more chance off the ball.

Before this season, everyone was thinking of Simmons, of tanking, of a 3 year rebuild. One slightly above .500 season, and it seemed like many needed this offseason to immediately push us into championship or bust status, which just seems silly. Yes, I get the use it or lose it with cap spae. Not concerned about being "capped out". We'll have many tradeable assets on decent deals. Excited to see the follow up from here.

A panic mov just to get something? It's day one. Gimme a fucking break. Like he wasn't planning on Turner, and just flipped a coin? fuck

Nice to see a rational, well thought out post on Turner - Thanks!

I've pretty much lost complete confidence that we can ever build a contender in Portland. When you have to overpay middling free agents just to get them to consider us you pretty much guarantee yourself to be stuck in NBA purgatory.

It's not that Turner is even a bad player. He makes is marginally better if he replaces Henderson and we bring everyone else back. But then we are going into the luxury tax to field a fucking team that has Evan Turner taking up 20% of the salary cap. So I can't see that happening, clearly at least one of our RFAs is not coming back and if that's the case we pretty much stay the same as last year except our payroll is now 2x higher with huge extensions to CJ and Plumlee coming up. Seriously, fuck this shit. Evan Turner literally has to turn into Paul George out of nowhere for this to be a success.

Bingo

I will put it this way, I would of rather brought back Batum at the max instead of this Turner contract. Nic actually loved it here and Turner is just saying this shit about us because he woke up with a big ass contract to sign

LOL

Anyone trying to spin this as anything but negative for the health of the franchise is delusional. Yeah Turner is cute and may help us win one or two more games, but so what? We're still gonna get bounced in the second round at best.

Think about the principal. They got spurned by every big free agent they talked to. They had to pay Evan Turner 18 million a year to come. Evan. Turner.

This just perpetuates the fact that no one wants to fucking play here. There's no chance of ever getting a top tier guy.

I agree. That's why I like the draft. Tank like we did Dames rookie year that last month

How you think we got Cj guys

Do you think he wanted to come here or do you think we massively overpaid him a contract he couldn't refuse?

Think about the state of our organization in this context.
the "state of our organization" is OREGON, hence as it has been for seemingly ever FA's don't seem to want to come here so we had to pay perhaps 3 mil over mkt, not that bad. I deal in reality and he will make us better

yeah Nic loved it so much he signed with MINNY last time arond as an RFA! LOL He would very likely not of re-signed here IMO, get real
