Evan Turner becomes a Blazer

As a 2/3 his skills are replicated by our guards and Aminu/Harkless.
Yes he's a above average mix of those skills, but is horrendous value - unlike Aminu.

Not one of those guys has turners post up game. His passing and ball handling is also superior to both Harkless and Aminu. He will make teams pay if they trap Lillard and CJ.

In my opinion, a third scorer is a guy who can make a team pay for trying to take option 1 and option 2 out of play. Wes Matthews was a great third scorer before his injury. Chandler Parsons was a great third scorer on Houston with Harden and Howard. Someone who can consistently hit a shot. Aminu is not consistent enough to be that third guy. That's why I was excited about Parsons. If healthy, he's the perfect third scorer. Now that we've got ET, I'm hoping we can find a power forward or center to be that third guy. If it's Millsap, I'll be over the moon. If it's Monroe or Kanter, I'll be reasonably satisfied. If it's Gasol, I'll be fine with that as well.

I think we go for Kanter. What I like about Turner at $16.3M over Parsons at $24M is that it still leaves us with cap flexibility. Won't we still have close to $18M to spend on another player if we renounce Meyers? That could easily land us Mahinmi, Biyombo or let us absorb Kanter's or Monroe's contract.

Hendo is not as talented as turner..

If Hendo can be had for less than $15 million per year, he is way better value. Their difference in production and skillset isn't big enough to justify a huge pay gap, and we at least are already aware that he can fit in here.

He isn't horrendous value. Aminu is dirt cheap. Frickin Bazemore just signed the same damn contract. That's the new reality of the NBA.

Aminu/Harkless can't handle the ball for shit. They both play out of control. Turner gives us another player in the starting lineup that can handle the ball and distribute. Think of him like Nic Batum, but instead of being flaky and inconsistent, he works hard and busts his ass on both ends of the floor. We don't have ANYONE on our team like Evan Turner.

I like Turner and have long thought he'd make an excellent Blazer.I'd love it if he does turn out to be a hard working Batum; that'd be ideal.
I'm just having trouble with the contract size.

Seems like a massive overspend ,and definitely not good value.
If the majority of their league is blowing wads left right and centre on ridiculous, short sighted contracts shouldn't mean we have to as well.
There's trade deadline and next seasons free agents. An albatross contract isn't going to help in those situations.

It is, though. Who cares if we sign someone that gives us a similar 8 PPG or whatever, or identical stats? What we paid for is playmaking. Henderson can not do that. We paid because it is important. The dollar difference is justified in that sense. SOme boob to fill in 8 PPG isn't the coveted aspect

Here's the problem - our cap space was "use it or lose it." It's gone after this summer no matter what. So either we use that cap space to bring in players that are going to make our team better, or we stand pat with what we've got and I don't think that's going to be enough. Turner is an improvement. Not a HUGE improvement, but he's a step up. He makes us better. Hopefully Neil has another move up his sleeve that will improve one of our frontcourt spots, as well. After this summer, our only shot at adding talent is through trades or the draft. The MLE is a joke in this current market. It's still going to be around 5 million. What the fuck does 5 million buy you?

Yeah good point - even if you've got the money - you have to have top players actually want to come here to play anyway.
So I guess available cap money is not as valuable for Portland as it is for other bigger teams.

This thread is great, on the first few pages people are furious about how dumb this signing is, but on the last few pages people say he's better than Henderson, start comparing him to Scottie Pippen on defense (LMAO), and claim we need another ballhandler on the team.

I don't get that, the move was a bad move, there's no getting around that.
It's not the end of the world, it's only one bad move in a league filled comparable bad moves, but i'm not going to sugarcoat it just to make myself feel better about it.

Yes but sample size is lol - 9/17 in 23 games.

Over the last 3 years .287, more likely what to expect.

Animu was a 27% 3pt shooter on previous teams. Joined the Blazers and shot 36% for a season.
I'm not exactly sure he'll shoot 36% next season but it's not impossible to think there will be a jump in Turners shooting with the Blazers.

So let's hope for another miracle right? Sounds like Portland....

LOL at all the people trying to convince themselves this was a good move. Stages of grief....acceptance.

For me at least, I don't think this is a good move. I'm not excited about turner but I can look at both the negatives and positives. The positive is he can handle the ball, decent mid range, can make plays. It does give cj and dame breaks and they can kinda play off ball more at times and get set. So yeah we kind of have to accept it whether we like it or not. Just gotta look at the positives and move on. Not an A+ move but not an F either

I think people are too focused on the dollar signs. This is something this summer that will be hard to get used to if you are continually looking at contracts from before this year as justification. Factor into that being that it is true the market is very hard to sell players on, which offends the shit out of us Portlanders because we love the city, we have to spend a little extra on guys to sway them to us. Portland had a nice season but nobody sees them as a contender yet, because they aren't.

Just wait till the offers start coming in on Crabbe, Mo and Meyers.

The key number there for me is he took 17 3's in 23 games. That's less than one a game. Just enough to keep the defense honest.

I don't buy that in a Stott's offense that he will have to shoot more of them. It's the wings that have no mid range shot, or feel comfortable at driving in traffic that are more inclined to take more 3's. Let him attack the basket and create shots for others.
He averaged 2 turnovers in 28 minutes. Not bad for someone who handles the ball a lot.

On the other hand there are a lot of us who actually discussed signing him months before the Blazer's were known to be interested in him. And yes have also discussed the need for another ball handler on the team. Now we might be wrong, but it's not like we are trying to talk ourselves into the signing.....we already wanted him.

I wonder if the furor by some against ET would be a lot less if he got 4 yrs at lets say 54 mil - 13.5 mil per which is about 4 mil per yr less against a cap this yr of 95 mil and likely near 110 mil next yr - is that 4 mil per really a big deal, or is it the player we signed?

I literally think it's because we signed a guy people hadn't really mentioned. It's kinda the same when people in here get pissed when 2 other teams make a trade and we think the Blazers should have been able to make a better offer. Or get pissed when we do make a trade and gave up too much. There is a very vocal group, small group very vocal who hates everything that does or doesn't happen, always.

I think so. Most people realize he is a solid player. It's the contract that is the issue. The numbers are crazy this summer and even though we saw it coming it is still hard to accept.

That and some value a rim protector more than another ball handler. But we kind of need both.

It would be less shit but still shit.

Evan Turner LOL.

You guys realize that Crabbe is gonna get 15+ too now right? 32 million dollars for two backup shooting guards.:mook:

No, you're the small vocal group who is a Shill for whatever management does. Your "calm reasonable" shtick has been predictable for years...pop psychoanalysis of how crazy the majority is. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Yeah, because Stotts likes to have them park by the 3pt line, so they get a lot of nice, set open looks. So if we're going to run that offense, shouldn't we have a good shooter at that position? Olshey has gone out and gotten bad shooters and we only hope they shoot mediocre.

We always realized that.

Our salary right now without any of our RFAs is 67 million. If they resign everyone at say 15 for Crabbe, 12 for Harkless, and 12 for Leonard, we would then be at 106 millipn. Over the salary cap with little to no trade flexibility, looking at max extensions for CJ and a significant contract for Plumlee.

All of this for Evan Turner. Think about that for a second. The most marginal of improvements in exchange for the entirety of our flexibility.

I have to wonder if we even keep Crabbe at 15 mil per or more now that we have Turner, keepin Moe IMO makes more sense

I'm cool with that. Gotta have some balance in here.

The salary is big deal. I think Turner may be a slight upgrade over Aminu, but they keyword is slight. This won't really improve our team much. Aminu was less than half the price, so I don't understand this deal. Turner is a better ball handler and passer than Harkless and Aminu, can create his own shot...but he's never been a prolific or even efficient scorer.

Admittedly, I haven't see him play much, but he was a backup last year on a team that was a touch above average.

Then this deal is even more idiotic. Crabbe is worth light years more than Turner.

If you would have asked people at the trade deadline if they would have traded one of Crabbe, Harkless or Leonard for Turner, most would have said no.

And I know I'm gonna get a bunch of responses now saying "that's not true! I totally would have traded one of them!" No you wouldn't. The majority wouldn't and they would be right. You're only saying that now because Turner is a Blazer.

The costs are even higher than flexibility. 1) We lose the free agent(s) Olshey would have signed with the money. 2) If he has to give away a player to make minutes for Turner (e.g. Crabbe, Harkless, Aminu), then what happened yesterday is effectively a trade of that player for Turner. 3) If he doesn't get rid of someone, that player will be unhappy with his minutes dwindling to nothing to give them to Turner, hurting team morale and creating dissension..
