its why i keep harping on the 2017 disaster as his biggest blunder. he had to hit on that as a borderline all star at least

He needed to trade those damn picks for a veteran.

in a different way, 2017 was worse than the insane 2016 spending spree

first, OKC was urgently shopping Paul George and Olshey got into the auction by offering all 3 of those picks and any combo of players, but held CJ untouchable in the trade along with Dame & Nurkic. Then a week later he took Collins and Swanigan.

now, it's possible that Indy was really high on Sabonis and would have gone with OKC's offer anyway. But CJ was coming off his best season while Oladipo was coming off his worst. So maybe the Blazers could have landed PG13 and Dame could have developed a great mesh with him. If not, having SGA and Gallo plus 7 1st round picks and swaps would have the Blazers in a better place than they are now

and of course, the players Portland passed by in favor of Zach and Biggie that draft is kind of mind-boggling

Nah, I don't think we needed a vet. We should have just drafted John Collins, Mitchell, or Adebayo. Or hell, even Jarrett Allen.

This is almost worse than when Olshey drafted Aminu right ahead of Paul George and Gordon Hayward.

But that just illustrates the problem. Draft picks are unpredictable. At that point we needed a known commodity. Not a rookie, and that was proven that next season when we got crushed by the Pels and Collins provided us with jack squat. We needed a veteran. Not a project big man who didn't even start for his college team.

A healthy Laker team was better than Portland.

Their GM goes out and revamps his roster around LeBron and AD.

In Portland, you have this worthless GM preaching “it was coaching, not talent.”

Dame wants a championship level roster…

Out:
Melo
Zach
Kanter*

In:
Snell
McLemore
Zeller
Mid-second round pick
Undrafted FA

Zero motivation to make any impactful trades. This is a treadmill roster.

I'm starting to think Neal talked Dame into 1 more year and if it doesn't work he'll go nuclear next off season. Only players on the books past next off season is Dame, CJ, and Norm. Every deal this off season has been 1 year deals.

Neil:

It's on me to put a team together that we can walk into the beginning of the season and think we're going to compete for a championship. And I told Dame, if you have to drive my butt every day to make sure we're out on a limb, we're taking risks, we're doing everything we can to build a roster you feel can walk in with the swagger knowing the roster is not the reason we can't compete for a championship, I readily accept that responsibility.

Also Neil:

Signs Cody Zeller, Ben McLemore and Tony Snell

*Looks at Roster*

"Nice"

Dame would be dumb to *not* ask for a trade.

This roster hasn’t improved one iota.

Neil Olshey offseason checklist

Draft second round projects? Check

Dumpster dive for low impact free agents? Check

For a team that's supposedly working under a cloud of urgency to keep Dame, this sure smacks of every single other one of his offseasons. Hell, he probably would have kept Stotts if he could have.

Don't forget...

Also Neil:

Drafts a couple of guys who are years away from being able to contribute.

It's right at the top of his offseason playbook.

If all these deals are for Vet Minimums, it's not bad. Those are servicable players who can contribute for cheap.

That said, it has done nothing to change the arc of the roster. That can still be done by moving CJ. Simons and Siakam are available...it's just how much will ti take to get them. Then if there is still a TPMLE to use, and you can tack on someone like say a Millsap, Markkanen or even a Morris brother, that wouldn't be bad.

But that is not exactly Neil's history....

This would all make sense if Neil quits in a week and goes to work for another team.

A nice kick in the dick before he walks out the door.

Kinda like what Pritchard did when he drafted Babbitt in the first round and then dipped a few days later.

Lakers have a billion dollar tv deal...they can pay any tax the league throws at them...if Olshey wants out all he has to do is sign Beibs to the MLE....that'll seal the deal on his tenure in a heartbeat

As bad as it is on S2 regarding Neil Purgatory — It’s much worse on Twitter. Olshey is getting absolutely lambasted.

Easily the most hated man in the city right now and quite possibly the most hated FO employee in team history :smiley-ko:

Neil good very well have the last laugh when he extends Dame once again, maybe next year. And after he pulls off a trade with Philly or Toronto.
He's gotten rid of a couple guys Dame signed off on last year in Melo and Kanter.

That was last year. Dame said it wasn't good enough this year. Talk about damning Neil with faint praise.

Dame has his prints all over this franchise and he will sign a super max down the road here.

Even fans in France are piling on Neil:

“Neil Olshey is the kind of guy who tells his son he's going to buy him ice cream for his beloved child and never comes back.”
