Politics Florida school shooting: Armed officer 'did not confront killer'

All points are straight on! The bottom line is that the Assault rifles are not meant to be in the hands of the general public, whatever profession they carry. Trump's idea of 21 and over for purchase still placates the NRA. They are weak and putrid politicians. Unfortunately, scores of this weapon type are out there in the possession of criminals/gangs. The entire world must perceive us as rampant violent insane people.
But not law abiding citizens because assault weapons were banned in the 80s.

Again, the kids are pretty quickly going to figure out which teachers are armed. The teacher would be carrying the gun on them. Having it anywhere else is a giant security problem and defeats the purpose of having armed teachers.
Youd be surprised how many people have a gun on them when you go to the grocery store. There are great holsters out there that conceal things quite nicely

The hundreds of districts which already permit teachers to arm themselves would suggest otherwise.
I wouldn't know..but I've worked in a few schools in the states and have yet to know of one which allows this practice...I think it's a bad idea across the board

Understood, and of course it's your right to feel that way. However it's always good to understand the opposing point of view as well. The LA Times article I linked earlier in this thread has a lot of interesting information in regard to this topic.

Yes, I know that but eventually students would see it.

More often than not these days, people who decry the public ownership of "assault weapons" are not adhering to the strict definition of "automatic" firearms, but are referring to semi-automatic rifles as well. I think there's definitely an argument to be made that there's little reason for average citizens to need SLR's. An argument many on the other side would disagree with and even dismiss, but a valid argument nonetheless.

Theres a difference between a grocery store full of strangers and a teacher who at the very least knows every student by name.
Anyone who thinks students are too dumb to figure out which teacher is carrying and which is not. Doesn't give kids enough credit.

gym class would be a problem

Starting the day would be a problem.
Young children like to hug their teachers without permission.
Even when they've been told not to & their parents have been made aware of the situation.

Posting here is one thing but I am going to write to my state representatives after I attend a local meeting at the school here soon to discuss the issue. I feel it's important to voice my concerns and hopefully more people will actually take what actions they can to add to the process. I belong to a neighborhood watch group where I live but now it's getting to be a national watch sadly

I hope that works, but I have less faith in government.

As a staff we're talking about what we'd do if a mass shooter would come for our school.
The plan is to hold drills after spring break.

Probably and then the teacher is the first one to get shot

Not that I'm opposed to drills--I'm not--but it's unfortunate and frustrating that that seems to be the most effective option that the schools have available to them at this point.

I recall hearing one of the Stoneman-Douglas teachers saying that she initially thought they were having another drill--suggesting that they already had a procedure in place and had had drills prior--until she saw one of her students had been shot.

It just makes me wonder if active-shooter drills have any value. Still, it's better than doing nothing.

That's being the proactive citizen @riverman . :twothumbs:

Oh I agree, I have no clue how a drill is going to help.
I just see so many problems with believing you can plan for a mass shooting like you can a fire drill.

But it was suggested by a fellow staff member so....

you disrespect a whole lot of great teachers...probably to prop up your argument?

When kids graduate high school reading at a 3rd grade level, the "great" teachers deserve disrespect.

maybe your kids...mine graduated with an academic scholarship...so did a lot of my students.and lots and lots of other teachers students....disrespect is what it is..you don't get to water it down by calling out teachers....start with parents maybe or lack of parenting in general...

my experience is reality....your blanket insult to teachers across the board was not.....there are a lot of reasons for your poll that are not on a teacher's shoulders....parenting..lack of parenting...urban strife in inner cities....yeah...you found a poll.....maybe the invention of the IPhone and video games had some affect on the attention span of the youth of America? Maybe dad is too busy watching the game or mom is working 3 jobs to pay rent...yeah..it's the teachers fault....and why recognize success? Doesn't prop up your argument that teachers aren't good enough for you?

There is no information or link to explain his graph. Is it nationwide? One year? One school? One state?

Nevermind, here is where Denny got that.

Now it's being reported that 3 other sheriff deputies didn't enter the building.

The first four officers on the scene didn't enter the building to confront the shooter or to check on children who had already been shot.

Very sad.
