I think he'll start z3.

I hope he starts Skal.

I doubt he'll start SuperMario because our bench playmaking weakness.

I wouldn't be surprised if he started Hoard. This is the type of thing he's done over and over again, play the 3rd stringer as the starter so as not to disrupt the rotation.

Starting Tolliver has the smallest effect on the rotation, so bet on it. I hate it.

Of course, at the beginning of the season every game is a big game. However, it feels even more so than usual.

In our first 20 games, many who have examined the schedule think we'll be lucky to be 10-10.

If we win, we're 3-1. If we lose, we're 2-2 ("You're welcome" - Captain Obvious)

3 of the next 5 (after this game) are against Philly, LAC, and Brooklyn.

But if you do who is going to run the 2nd unit?
You pull CJ, Hood, and Mario for Ant, Baze, and Skal with about 5-6 minutes left in the 1st (and 3rd), and then you bring CJ and Mario back in to start the 2nd (and 4th), along with those 3 2nd unit guys. Then bring the other starters back 5-6 minutes into the 2nd. Simple 8-man rotation.

LA is going to FEAST on us tonight, but I think we get the W.

Mario doesn't "run" the second unit anyways. His assist % is an abysmal 4%. He basically holds the ball and makes the first pass. That's not really hard for anyone to do. You could have Baze do it, CJ could do it, Ant etc. It's not really complicated and the Blazers don't get assists anyways.

We're abysmally low in assist % right now. We have no playmakers outside of Dame and most of our possessions are Dame/CJ isolations. We shooting really well from inside the arc. Dame and CJ are finishing well at the rim, and we are controlling the paint against other teams. But it would definitely be nice to see other players get involved.

Our passing sucks, not just assisting. This is by design.

We are 30th in the league so far with only 204 total passes per game. Don't think we should make too much about an individual ast% yet.

Yeah, I don't know how much I make of that though. Look at the past few years. The bottom 5 is made up of a lot of good teams, and consistently the same ones: Rockets, Thunder, Cavs, Raptors, Blazers, Wizards (when they were good).

When you have the best isolation players in the league you don't really need to be too fancy - at least in the regular season....

I'd love to see Pau in this game....it won't happen but he knows the Spurs game well

I'm starting to believe that Pau is not going to be playing any significant minutes this season.

From "hopefully ready by training camp" to "will be ready for the season opener" to "we don't know when he'll be ready". Sounds very much like PR spin for "he's not ready, and we don't know when he'll be ready".

Reminds me of Festus Ezeli.

It was good to see the Blazers pull out the win on the road to an undefeated team in a playoff esque atmosphere. A lot of times it goes the other way. A gutsy and hard earned win.

There was definitely a few plays he could have used it on earlier to keep or help build momentum, but holding off using it untill the end paid off. I agree Hats off to Terry for his patience there.

Dame played well in the 2nd half and helped us win. His slow starts concern me. The Blazers early woes were as much on him as they were on Tolliver (and Stotts). Dame is still struggling from deed as well.

CJ was being his old self for sure. He was driving into three guys in the lane and I was cussing at him, but he made the shots he normally misses. And he caught me by surprise with his passing. He plays so much better when he plays within the offense.

Yeah, it Hurts, especially with Nurk and Pau already out and a thin front court. They were able to pop his shoulder back in and he says he feels good, but he will likely be out a spate of games. Skal should start in his place, but Stotts will likely go with Hezonja. The Blazers will be forced to play small ball. Hopefully, Stotts doesn't give Tolliver more minutes. Talk abiut adding insult to injury.

It is going to be a tough game. Maybe resting so early in the season will end being a bad thing for the Spurs. Let's hope so eith no injuries on their side. Another 2-0 team. This one with the best coach in the NBA. Don't over stretch, you might dislocate your shoulder.

Go to Whiteside all night. He needs to go hard and make San Antonio foul him. He can hit the free throws and he dominate inside against them. LaMarcus is not going to stop him. He can easily beat LA for rebounds. The hardest part of that assignment is Whiteside coming out on Aldridge. He has problems with laying off and not covering the perimeter and long jump shots.

Don't underestimate Murray and Forbes, but yeah Dame and CJ need to go at them all night. They are far better than their counter parts.

Hood vs DeRozan is a better matchup than you let on. Hood can guard the hell out of DeRozan with his length and help counter him on the other end. Hood hit all of his 3's last night and is shooting 45% from the arc on the season.

Bazemore will be very important tonight, especially on the defensive end. I have a feeling he is going to play well on the other end as well tonight.

Mario will likely start in place of Zach. He feels like a Stauskas type player who will have a few games where he blows up the boxscore, but mostly he will have subpar uneventful nights. Hopefully, tonight will be one of those explosions.

An issue with Mario is he is too frantic and isn't able to maintain control of the ball because of it. If he slowed down just a bit, learned how to maintain control in those tense situations he would be much better.
Awesome responses by @Chris Craig it's going to be a good matchup to watch. Hoping Hood does well on DeRozen like you say. He is a very good player. Tough to shut down. Bring on edgy Mario all the way! Skal will excel if he faces the second unit.

Note:
PER certainly isn't the end all, but...

Skal is 3rd on the team in PER with 22.5, way ahead of 4th (Hood) with 16.3.

His per/36 splits are pretty wild too. Don’t really need to post them because it’s a small sample, but at the same time, minutes should be earned, not given, especially when talking about bench players. Skal has earned more minutes imo. I honestly don’t even care if Tolliver starts, just as long as Skal gets more minutes.

Agreed, "MVP of training camp" who's 3rd on team in PER should get more minutes.

Skal won a rotation spot out of the gate...he'll be a rotation player all season. Great pickup ..he's going to just keep getting better

Some positive: i was reading the pre game thread on the spurs sub on reddit, and they were talking about how Whiteside was killing them in the past, one interesting fact was that Whiteside reached his career high 9 blocks against the Spurs last year, and was Unstoppable

I really don't mind that. If he stinks up the court they pull him and adjust. If he responds well to starting then it turns into a good thing.
Point is he is a vet and "Shouldn't" hurt the team being out there. Now if he does then all the more reason to play Skal or Mario.
