Knicks hope to have Marbury against Pacers

Indiana (12-12) at New York (7-16) 7:30 pm EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Isiah Thomas and the New York Knicks havestruggled to win games with - and without - point guard StephonMarbury in the lineup.

The Knicks likely will have Marbury back in action Monday whenthey host the Indiana Pacers.

Off to a terrible start in a season filled with controversy bothon and off the court, New York has played five of its lastseven games without Marbury, who has been mourning the death ofhis father.

Marbury's difficult season also has been marred by a one-gamehiatus last month, when he left the team after being demotedfrom the starting lineup.

The only member of the Knicks who has received more criticismthis season than Marbury has been the embattled Thomas, who hasdrawn the ire of fans for his involvement in an embarrassingsexual harassment lawsuit and for his team's dismal play.

However, the Knicks were briefly able to shake off some of thetough times on Saturday with a 94-86 victory over the New JerseyNets, ending a five-game losing streak.

Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 32 points, Eddy Curry shookoff a recent scoring slump with 23 points and Zach Randolphadded 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks, who had falleninto a tie for last place in the Eastern Conference.

With Marbury likely back in the lineup Monday, New York hopesfor another solid all-around performance against the Pacers, whowere coached by Thomas from 2000-2003.

Indiana has alternated wins and losses the last nine games. ThePacers are coming off a 106-103 victory at Miami on Saturday, improving their road record to 7-5.

Jamaal Tinsley scored 26 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 24 forthe Pacers, who have not posted consecutive wins in the monthof December.

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- As cold as the New York Knicks were duringthe second quarter, Mike Dunleavy was equally as hot in the thirdand it turned into more ugliness at Madison Square Garden.

After contributing to a defensive effort that forced the Knicksto miss 20 straight shots in the second, Dunleavy scored 22 ofhis season-high 36 points in the third as the Pacers moved overthe .500 mark with a 119-92 victory on Monday night.

Jermaine O'Neal added 22 points for Indiana (13-12), which isabove .500 for the first time since it was 3-2 on November 9.Troy Murphy contributed 17 points and Jamaal Tinsley collected12 assists for the Pacers, who shot 58 percent (49-of-84).

Dunleavy turned in his second 30-point game of the season as hewas 7-of-9 from the floor in the third and 13-of-18 overall. Hescored 14 of Indiana's final 20 points in the last 4:47 of thequarter that snapped a 64-64 tie and put Indiana ahead 84-72entering the fourth.

Before Dunleavy heated up, it was Indiana's defense that washot. They turned a three-point deficit into a 12-point lead byholding the Knicks without a field goal for 10:50, forcing themto miss jumpers, tip-ins and only get points from the foul line.

The Knicks took a three-point edge on Jamal Crawford's 23-footerjust 14 seconds into the second quarter. By the time theyscored again on Zach Randolph's hook shot with 56.5 seconds toplay, Indiana was up by 10.

New York hit its final three shots of the first half and trailedby seven at the break. The Knicks hung around and eventuallytied it on a pair of David Lee free throws with 5:51 remainingin the third.

That was it as Dunleavy scored 12 straight Indiana points, opening a 76-66 edge with 2:08 remaining. They continued topull away during the fourth and midway through the period, theKnicks and owner Jim Dolan started hearing loud boos and loud"Fire Isiah" chants.

By then the only thing for Knicks fans worth watching was seeingif Dunleavy could reach 40 points. In between chanting forThomas' termination and booing the Knicks, they did not get tosee Dunleavy reach 40 as he took a seat with just under fourminutes remaining.

Randolph led the Knicks with 26 points but scored just ninepoints after halftime. Eddy Curry, who rebounded from Friday'sscoreless night in Chicago with 23 points and nine reboundsSaturday against New Jersey, finished with 16 points and alsohad seven turnovers.

Stephon Marbury returned for the first time since December 8 dueto the death of his father and had 16 points in 29 minutes.
