Free Agent Gary Payton II to the Blazers

So if Dame/GP play all the minutes at PG, Ant won't play any minutes in the role where he was most successful. Doesn't seem like the best use of talent or $$$.
GPII isn't a PG, and likely won't see minutes there. He's a short 2/3 that makes up for it with great defense. Ant will still be the backup PG.

IMHO, GP2 is a SG on O.

As of right now I gotta think best case realistic scenario in Cronin’s head has to be some package of Hart/Nurk for Ayton.

let's try coming up with one...

* let's see, Nurk at 15M + Hart at 13M; so, 28M outgoing

---> Ayton signs for 30M so that 30M works with the Blazers....maybe; just as long as it doesn't breach the hard cap...uh oh

BUT WAIT!!...the Suns, because of BYC are credited with only sending out 15M. But in order to absorb 28M incoming, they have to send out at least 22.4M. Who fits that? either Landry Shamut at 9.6M or Dario Saric at 9.2M. But neither of those players can come to Portland because Payton's kind of loopy contract hard-capped Portland

so then, whichever player/asset Phoenix had to add would have to go to a 3rd team. But for a 3rd team to get involved, they would need cap-space or a TPE to absorb that player because that team couldn't send a matching salary to Phoenix because of Ayton's BYC or to Portland because of the hard cap. I know!!...let's get a 4th team involved!! (imagine green font with that one)

and if a team could be talked into that it would take draft pick assets. Phoenix wouldn't be sending any and would probably be demanding a pick themselves.

So it would be Portland adding pick(s) to the Nurkic/Hart package

I have a solution to this conundrum: fuck Ayton then forget about Ayton. He ain't worth it

Enter Detroit?

We still haven't finalized that deal.

Payton is not a backup "PG", his role is as an SG/wing, he can defend at least the 1-3 positions very well. Ant is the backup PG
Stop. He is not ideal to be a full time defender of the 3. He has a substantially smaller reach than Powell did and everyone bitched about him.

Payton is a better defender than Powell, but length does matter.

The ol' fuck and forget.

He will be a nice addition to the team, and this takes something away from the Warriors.
You don’t think they can find another guard who can score 7 points a game and play a little defense?

in a vacuum, Payton is an interesting unconventional player who has a fairly elite ability to disrupt an opposing offense with hustle and anticipation.

but the Blazer roster isn't a vacuum (insert jokes there). Portland is now paying 80M/year for three guards under 6'3. That's olshey-level imbalance, especially considering the investment of a #7 pick in Sharpe

right now:

PG - Dame/Ant
SG - Ant/Hart/Payton/Sharpe/Johnson/Louzada
SF - Hart/Little/Grant/Payton/Sharpe/Winslow/Johnson/Louzada
PF - Grant/Winslow/Watford/Brown/Little
C - Watford

coach - Billups
GM - Hard-Cap

Wing - Hart/Grant/Payton/Little/Sharpe/Winslow/Johnson/Brown/Louzada

the power of the NBA is at Wing...two-way all-star level talent at wing. Portland's best wing is either Hart or Grant. Portland's continued weakness at wing is the big roster flaw that olshey created and Cronin hasn't solved yet. Hard-capping the team for Payton makes the problem worse IMO

for all that talk about flexibility...

How come you left off Nurk and Eubanks?

"Warriors, suddenly unwilling to spend, reportedly lose Gary Payton II to Trail Blazers"

https://www.sfgate.com/warriors/article/Warriors-lose-Gary-Payton-Trail-Blazers-17278915.php

The Golden State Warriors have lost key role player Gary Payton II to the Portland Trail Blazers — despite the fact that the Dubs could have paid Payton themselves and owner Joe Lacob had previously gloated about being willing to "do everything we need to do to stay on top and be the best that we can possibly be."

OK, I was up late last night drinking and so didn't see this until now. Excuse me for some strong opinions (NOT hangover-driven, trust me; it is sunny here in Seattle, I got a great night of sleep, and am feeling like a million bucks. Or was.)

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS FUCKING SIGNING?

I'm sure everyone else in this thread (or at least some of you) have pointed out the obvious, but WHAT THE FUCK?

Gary Payton II?
  • He's gonna be 30 in December (meaning: even if he's a late bloomer... he's pretty much done blooming)
  • He is 6'3" (meaning: where's he going to play? We have Dame and Ant and others who are all sub-6'4")
  • He played 2055 regular season minutes in his six year career. 1247 of them were this past season. (meaning: wtf has this guy done in his career to earn this kind of money)
  • We have other needs. Big guys needed. Kevon Looney got slightly less money and he's four years younger and he's six inches taller with a better career. That's a better option OFF OF THE SAME FUCKING WARRIORS TEAM that would have made more sense. (meaning: what the fuck is this fucking signing?)
This is a terrible signing. I had no illusions that this team was going to be actually good this year, but this just shows a basic lack of intelligence in my opinion.

One thing I noticed in watching GP defensive highlights. Tons of hustle.....love it! But on the majority of his defensive efforts, you see one of Thompson, Wiggins, or Draymond hedging towards the ball. That is of great comfort and security and he will have nothing like that here in Portland to back him up. Wonder if that will tone down his aggressiveness?

Correct. You don't need to, because most of us already think you're incapable of debate, so really there's no need at this point to even try to change our minds.

correct, and let me let you in on a little secret. I have you MUTED. So dont even waste anymore of your time trying to interact with me. Thanks!
