Gary Trent jr signed to guaranteed three year deal

You're misreading those numbers. Simons is making over 1.5x as much per season (on average) as Trent Jr.

Simons $3,985,080 is over two seasons. That's an average of $1,992,540 per season.

Trent's $3,919,177 is over 3 seasons. That's an average of $1,306,392. So, Simons is making an average of 52% more per season.

Trent is locked in for the 3rd year at that rate. If the Blazers pick up the 3rd year team option on Simons, he will make will be $2,232,720 in his 3rd year. Simons' 4th year team option of $3,905,027 will be nearly as much as Trent's entire 3-year contract.

I swear sometimes people around here are just looking for something to bitch about. The headline of that article could have been better written (Trail Blazers second-rounder Gary Trent Jr. to receive higher salary guarantee than six first-rounders), but it did include the word guarantee, and if you actually read the article it's clear they are comparing 3 years salary for Trent to 2 years salary for everyone else.

I read it and it still seems like we're overpaying for him. I know it's not much on the grand scheme of things but it's a pattern with Olshey.

We used most of our MLE to sign a 2nd round draft pick to a guaranteed contract and he is making $40k less per season than our 1st round draft pick? We're paying him more than 6 of the 1st round draft picks this year?

No, we didn't. The Taxpayer MLE is $5,337,000. I don't know what Trent's starting salary is, but the average over the next three seasons is $1,306, 392. That's not even close to "most of our MLE". Worst case, it's still less than 1/4 of our MLE.

Learn the math, then post!

I think it was a good signing. If he's even an average backup in year three, that will have been a steal, and we can resign him. If not, that amount is a drop in the bucket.

Great news....Olshey didn't mention the Clippers once during todays media event!

No, it doesn't seem that way. To me, it looks an awful lot like a minimum contract. Here are the current min player salaries based on years of NBA experience:

Years of Experience Salary
0 $838,464
1 $1,349,383
2 $1,512,601
3 $1,567,007
4 $1,621,415
5 $1,757,429
6 $1,893,447
7 $2,029,463
8 $2,165,481
9 $2,176,260
10+ $2,393,887

If you add the first three years you get a total of $3,696,448 over three years. That's slightly less than the rumored Trent signing of $3,919,177, but keep in mind those mins are based on the 2018-19 salary cap and are expected to go up each year. I suspect what the Blazers actually gave Trent is a min contract based on the latest salary cap projections for the next three seasons. How is giving someone an min contract overpaying them (Meyers Leonard excluded)?

You can quibble about the 3rd year, but without it, we lose his Bird rights.

You obviously can’t do math because with Trent and Seth salary it leaves next to nothing for MLE, not to mention we have 16 players already... Neil isn’t doing shit, he is a coward like I have been saying... scared to make a big trade because he knows most fans have low standards and will buy tickets regardless

LMAO, of all the things you could go off about this summer it's the use of the tax-MLE? You blow up about Curry's deal only being 1 year and now you are complaining that Olshey locked in someone for 3 years, thus making him a RFA with Bird Rights?
