Epic ... Failure.

As I said before, Draft: A.
Everything else... solid F.

Overpaid Ant.
Overpaid Nurk.
Dame got his extension, but I lean toward it being a 'good move now; bad move for later'
Grant - Meh.
Payton - Boo.

Solid F.

Epic.
Failure.

Or Epic Bad Take. Only time will tell.

It would be interesting to find thread assessing draft of relatively unknown Damian Lillard.

A+ Drafting Jabari Walker at 57. Yes, he was there after others had passed, and they did trade away 46 when another player, reportedly, got snatched up. Still, they get the A+
A Drafting Sharpe. They went for it. I liked Daniels more and even was close on Duren, and no additional 1st rounder … they took the highest impact shot.
B Re-signing Nurkic and Simons after shutting them down … Clutch … value players … and the size of the contracts being up there but not irresponsible.
B Getting Grant in an extremely reasonable trade. What he gets on his next contract based on performance is a different conversation. It’s a B as he’s not at the top of targets where there was chatter.
B-/C+ GP2 for his impact on the D, and lower $$$ wasn’t going to get it done. It would be HIGHER if not for the hard cap.
C- Not getting a deal done for a quality SF even with a bit of overpay. An incomplete pending the February deadline or next summer? Nope. It wasn’t an easy get, but so what.
D Availability of a good back-up C or PF/C and wanting to be in Portland be damned. They didn’t get one.
FINAL GRADE: B/B-

When recently signed players can be traded prior to the deadline, the grade could go up. Just saying.
I’m not grading management changes/additions, but they did a strong job.

Solid A for me...no complaints at all. .with this roster expect trades at the deadline when the cream rises to the top..... Thrilled they didn't trade Hart and now signed Jabari

Can’t wait till people come back and revisit this getting both Grant and Payton immediately puts us 8-10 spots better on D add in Hart and I feel this is our best defensive squad in years. Looking forward to the season

as I said only way we win championship is for two of these young guys to pop big. Nice part is they have potential for this to happen

Management took two different paths of building for the future while also trying to contend now. I'm expecting border line playoff team mediocrity for today but have some hope for the tomorrow seeds planted.

I would have preferred committing to one path or the other but appreciate that they swung for the fences with the lotto pick. I hope that they blow it up midseason and commit to the future after selling the team to Uncle Phil, but today my grade for their moves this offseason is a C

So you gave them a C but want to blow it up?
I assume that includes trading Dame for picks and flexibility?

Simons, Little and Sharpe become lights out legit contributors is about the only way I see this team being a top 4 seed.

I think Little can be a really solid player. He just needs to stay healthy. But he is still just 22 years old so maybe he can put this injury bug behind him. I remember CJ being constantly injured early in his career.

My biggest reservation with this team is that we’re really lacking in size.

Heard Chauncey in a interview last weekend in Sirius. He flat out said "this is not a championship team". Verbatim. He confirmed what we all (?) know but it still stung to hear it from him. These offseason moves don't move the needle much in anyone's eyes. He only mentioned Ant and Nas having great potential and I think he said something about Grant. I didn't hear him say anything about Sharpe when I was tuned in.

Try to find a clip of him saying that. I want to hear it and I'd like others to hear it too.

I'm not sure if I like this or not.

Sounds good he has realistic expectations.

Still I feel like the coach and players should give it 100% and not set an upper limit on how much they can accomplish.

It would be interesting to listen to that interview. Who was interviewing him?

Did he really say those things? This is what can be found:

Pretty much a smaller market, that wants to be there, that wants to win there, that wants to grow there after all the influx that we've had, we're lucky man, we're lucky. So we have to take full advantage of that and try to give him the best opportunity and chance to be successful." said Billups when speaking about Lillard in his interview with Sirius XM Radio.

I think it was Amin Al Hasan and some other guy. He said it a few minutes prior to the Sheed story.

He did also say Payton will be huge for the team , and although not a contender , nobody will look forward to playing the Blazers. I liked that.

Billups is X factor of this team now and he looks laid back on this Sirius video, but this season gonna be all on him:) So I am guessing, that saying "this is not a championship team" is what he needs to say.

As for offseason grade: incomplete. They could trade Lillard for picks and go full young or they could trade that 7 and youngs to get Lillard real help for now. You can't have the best of both worlds.

If it's true, That's a very strange and stupid thing for an NBA coach to say before the season has even started. Especially after a season in which Dallas unexpectedly made it to the Western Conference finals, the Lakers didn't even make it to the play-in, the Clippers were defeated twice in the play-in, and the reigning Western Conference champion was embarrassingly trounced in game 7 on their home court.
Did Billups predict all that to happen?

I think him and Joe are on the same page, they think they have to get better and the way the team is today, they aren't contenders. I don't think that means that Chauncey isn't planning on coaching them into contenders and that him and Joe aren't planning on more moves to get us in contention or closer to it. I'm cool with Chauncey saying that because it's real and I think he'll back it up with telling his squad that if they want him to see them as contenders they'll have to prove it to him.

Was this stupid?

I don't think so.

I want management to put together a contender. That seems near impossible in the short term mostly because they aren't that talented, but also because the talent that they do have doesn't fit together great (their two best players play the same spot/form an undersized backcourt etc...). Dame's timeline doesn't seem to fit with a short term contender scenario, but I'm open to moving Ant for the right return too. I'm open to moving anyone to move the team towards the goal (go laundry!), but mostly they need to hit on their picks and make wise FA decisions.

While I appreciate management went big with the #7, Shaedon is an unknown still so hard for me to really judge that move. Walker looks like he has some potential too but both are very unlikely to contribute much this upcoming year... fingers crossed. I liked that they resigned Ant but am not thrilled about Nurk at 4/70M... not going to stir up a hornets nest of responses getting into that though.

The two roads approach hopefully is management's attempt to put a bow on the franchise for a planned sale. Shore up the season ticket sales with the short term moves that keep them 500-ish & address the future with the picks that hopefully turn into gold.

Yeah not sold on the Nurk, Dame, Ant Grant and whomever seems to be available for the SF spot either. Guess we'll see how it all pans out.

Really? Just one of them needs to be to have a real shot at a top-4 WC seed, we have seen it with Dame, CJ, Nurk and athletic defensive wings. The Blazers have Dame and Nurk, Grant / Nas / GP2 / Hart are as good as, if not better, defensively than Aminu/Harkless, GP2 can do the guard defense that Seth Curry did at times when they were the 3rd seed.

If just Simons gives you the same kind of production that CJ gave you in 2018, it's about the same team and thus immediatly capable of a 4th seed. They need 2 of them to pop to really contend, but top-4 seed? Nah.
