From my understanding we won’t know if we’ve made the trade at 7 till 1st round is over or almost over is that right?

I think it is something like the league won't announce it until after the 2nd pick (if there is one) is made. But Woj would have reported it long before that.

No, we won't finalize the Grant deal until the new league year. So just like we know the Grant deal is done we could know a deal is done with the 7th pick at any point between now and late tomorrow night. Hell, if it's like the Wiggins+ for Love deal it could be a couple months before it's a sure thing.

Hopefully Billups can get him to rebound better and fight through screens.

One of my pet peeves about todays game-when is the last time you saw a guy fight through a screen? It's pretty pathetic watching two defenders switch on a screen...before the fucking screen is even set!

Can't happen. Deals can't be agreed to on draft day and finalized later. Sorry. </Green font>

I really like the fact that the green font didn't post but it just has "</Green font>" at the end of it because it gave me a real WTF moment. A little more fun tonight because tonight has been fun and regardless of if the OG trade goes down or not, I'm glad it's not done yet because tomorrow still has a ton of intrigue. And hey on draft day anything is possible except for trading an impending free agent which has become abundantly clear to everyone here, even though most of us were crystal clear on that for a while now.

The whole premise of this trade for Detroit is free up salary. This trade won’t look as bad if they get Ayton.
Can Stewart play the 4? He seems like a bad match with Ayton... I know he didn't take a big step up in his second year, but he's still only 21...

I’d still be worried about that bench. I’d rather start Nas at this point, the trade down and get assets with #12 for #7 and draft Sochan. As much as I like Watford, he cannot be our backup PF. Eubanks was a nice little story, my friend went to Reynolds with him, but he shouldn’t even be on the team next year. Ingles isn’t a two guard.

Nas isn’t a 4. Continuing to play PF is going to be the reason he gets more injuries.

I have read this a few times on this board and I am not seeing the logic especially since they spend so much time these days on the perimeter. I agree that Nas is a natural SF, but I don't see why a player who weighs 220 with a 7.2" wing span (Little) can get hurt more often while playing PF any more than a guy who weighs 210 with the same wing span (Grant)

I like that they can switch when needed. But I agree about Sochan, he would fit well on this team

there are at least a couple guys in the draft that fight through screens - Johnny Davis and Jeremy Sochan.

Might be coaching. They might be told there’s too many good shooters out there so don’t fight through screens just switch before it’s set.

But were talking about winning it all and nothing less right? Seems straight forward to me. He missed almost as many games as he played never got out of the second round snd fleeced the team for a last contract.
As you can probably tell, I am not a big Roy fan.
Second round?? He never got out of the FIRST round.

Let's just say I like

Dame
Simons
Grant
OG
Nurk

Better than

Dame
CJ
Moe
Chief
Nurk

I like the bench we would have better than those teams too.

I like the rotation we'll be looking at if we acquire OG for Bledsoe and 7 better than any rotation we've had since Dame has been here because of the iteration of Dame I expect to get this upcoming season as opposed to what he was and the lack of cohesion we had when LaMarcus was here.
I don't know. That second team had a great bench- Curry, Kanter, Hood, Turner, Collins all contributed to winning that season.

Sochan makes so much sense for us at this point. You can start Nas and Grant, but Sochan might ultimately be starting over Nas heading into the playoffs, especially if he proves to be a great point of attack defender right away.

He would be the perfect fit next to Grant. He’s overall a great defender and will require the least shots. If he can hit catch and shoot 3s at a high clip, he might start really soon. 6’8 Grant and 6’9 Sochan make up for the size in the backcourt.

Yes. Deals are handshake agreed to when reported by Woj, but officially finalized later.

Grant deal may ultimately end up as part of a multi team trade if either us or Detroit later wants to.

Why would a role for a rookie "make so much sense"?

The Blazers aren't contenders, and rookies in the lottery should be picked based off BPA.

Taking a better fit instead of BPA at 7 because of Jerami Grant is blasphemous in my mind. If this experiment with Grant fails, he could potentially walk in a year. And then you're stuck with your "perfect fit" while the BPA is on another team.

I was just talking about skillset. Great defender, good catch and shoot guy, won’t require shots to be kept happy.

I mean I guess it depends on who the BPA is. If trading down nets a 2023 1st and/or more with Sochan, I’d be on board with that, yes. Like if I get Sochan + Dort + 2023 1st for BPA at #7, I’d have to really consider it.

I thought Grant's salary next season is too big for the TPE. I think that is why the news broke today - so it can be 'official' before the draft on Thursday

That being said, Sochan might be the BPA for some people if Sharpe and Murray are gone.

No, it fits because there's 100k wiggle room.

https://cbabreakdown.com/salary-cap-exceptions

The Traded Player Exception is the most intriguing (and inscrutable) part of the CBA. This exception allows teams to trade players and exceed the salary cap in the process. How this exception operates depends on (1) the perspective of the trading team (and trades can be structured entirely differently from each team’s perspective), (2) whether a team trades players simultaneously or in separate deals, and (3) whether a player’s salary is protected in full or not. The rules for simultaneous vs. non-simultaneous trades are discussed below. Note, non-simultaneous trades are the ones that result in a trade “credit” that can be used for up to one year; this credit is often confusingly referred to as a “trade exception” when the CBA never uses that term. If a player’s salary is not protected in full, the way the exception is calculated is based on just the player’s protected compensation (as opposed to the player’s protected and unprotected compensation).

Non-simultaneous trades
— For trades of players that occur at different times, the Traded Player Exception permits a team to take back 100% of the outgoing player’s salary, plus $100,000. Using the non-simultaneous trade rule permits a trade to initially “start” by sending out a player and then be completed down the road in a separate trade (i.e., in October, Team A sends out a player but only receives a draft pick from Team B; then Team A completes the trade in January by taking a player back into this “trade credit” from Team C).

  • Rule — A traded player may be replaced in a non-simultaneous transaction by one or more players acquired in a different trade whose salaries together do not exceed 100% of the traded player’s salary plus $100,000.

  • Example — Make the same assumptions as the non-taxpaying scenario above. A team previously traded a $10 million player for a draft pick. As a result, the team now has a $10 million trade credit that it has up to one year to use. That team could trade a draft pick for a player or players making $10.1 million. ($10 million plus $100,000.))

Grant's 2022-23 cap number: $20,955,000

Our TPE from the CJ trade: $20,864,198

Just works out!

All the tough posts about Jerami Grant over the last few weeks i understand. I feel this was a good move. Not only do we know this guy has the potential to help the team compete but i feel he was in a less than optimum place in Detroit.

I'm hoping he can find some new MoJo with Chauncey and Dame? Might be a great fit?

Good fit. I'm just concerned about the amount of the new contract he wants.
