The Heat didn't do the same contracts for Crowder or DJJ. They have other players (Dragic, Haslem, Iggy, Olynick) who could all similar to Meyers match salaries in trades if ever needed.

Miami, and Meyers, are in a unique situation. The Heat have Adebayo at C. He's one of those big men with the defensive skills of a SF. H can go out on the perimeter and defend well. And he's good at attacking the rim. With Butler and Adebayo on the floor, the heat will need floor spacing. Meyers can provide that. And because of the different skills of Bam and Meyers, they actually fit together much better than a Nurk and Meyers. It was always frustrating to watch Portland try and play Meyers as a PF. That forced either Nurkic or Davis to go out on the perimeter and defend PF's because Meyers wasn't capable.

Meyers will be a situational big man (duh). And he's competent enough (now) and big enough to be the only Heat big man on the floor when another team is going with a traditional C. Meyers does a couple of things well and that stretches to both ends of the floor. He's a big body in the paint on defense who is an adequate defensive rebounder; and he's a floor spacer on offense

something else: 10 million a year in 2020 is not the same as 10M/year in 2016. And a 2 year deal is not the same as a 4 year deal. These are not equivalent contracts

True, teams had more money to spend in 2016 than this year and many teams had money to spend so more teams were competing for players. Miami was merely competing with themselves as very few teams have that kind of money to spend on a player of Leonards caliber.

There stats pretty close to each other but one stat is not there is Giles played for the king's and Zach play for us. Zach had about the same stats then Giles on the boards last year. I like them both at there stage in there career.

It's not a two-year contract, it's a one-year contract with a 2nd year team option thatll get declined. Also, the only reason the gave him that much is to help them trade-wise as he'd amount to more outgoing salary making it easier to match salary in a trade. Also likely that theres a handshake agreement that they'd pay Meyers extra if he decided to waive his NTC no matter what.

They essentially overpaid him to increase they're trade flexibility. The initial contract we gave him hurt our flexibility. Big difference.

Good post, Meyers didn't get paid only because of the flexibility, but he did get overpaid for including that flexibility.

He’s gonna have to have a pretty amazing season to go from getting the minimum to something more than the MLE. Yeah he’s young, but the injury concerns aren’t going to just disappear, especially as the investment grows. I think he’s going to play a role for Portland this season, but I don’t think it’s going to be a consistent one. It’s going to be very matchup dependent imo. For example, the first two games are against the Jazz and Rockets. Both have traditional centers backing up theirs starters. In those matchups, it’s more likely that Kanter plays.
